Chapter 4: Misunderstanding

Louis grins as he rides his horse, trekking the road toward his temporary abode. However, his grin disappears as he remembers Rose. Louis thinks his actions are due to his pity towards the crippled girl. A memory from the past strikes him like it’s déjàvu, and it’s one of the things from Louis’s history that he wants to forget.

“How unpleasant! I’m starting to make the same mistake as that man.”

Pity was the reason for his actions. Louis only sees things to complicate further as they continue with that being the only reason for the continuation of their relationship. But when he remembers how Rose began crying when he suggested a divorce, it haunts him.

Louis tries to forget such a memory as it reminds him of his past. Now he focuses on his farm expansion to earn CP from the system. The only thing in Louis’s mind right now is how to improve his territory. He opens his system and checks more information about his fief; it is not surprising that it can give such complete, accurate details.

This thing is quite useful, but every time I read the details about my fief, it only makes me lose hope. How can I progress if I have no citizens at all? Manpower is one of the essential things I must have, or I am walking closer to God’s punishment.

Louis’s eyes moisten from imagining the punishment that will happen. However, when his head lowers down, an idea lights up in his mind. Louis grins and keeps it on the entire journey until he makes a triumphant return. But it made him look like a devil with a nefarious plan. His face, still smiling, sent shivers down Rose’s spine, waiting for his return.

Louis’s face turns bright pink after noticing the terrified Rose gazing at him trembling. The embarrassment he feels causes him to avoid eye contact with his wife. For the first time, Rose has never seen this side of her husband.

Why did he look like a devil riding a horse but change into this adorable bunny when he saw me?

Rose smiles after witnessing such a thing from his husband, who is someone that everyone portrays as a villain without any redeeming trait. With the assistance of her walking cane, she follows her husband inside their temporary abode. But then she questions if she truly deserves this kind of treatment.

Rose’s life is only full of suffering and when she thinks that her father gave her hand to the worst human being in the kingdom hits the final nail to kill her strength in believing there’s still good. However, everything changed when her current husband forced her into bed, where she fought back for the first time. But her decision to fight back caused her almost to kill Louis as he hit the floor head first, causing the Lord to lose consciousness. Then when the Lord awakens, everything seems different about him. It’s like there’s another person in Louis’s body.

Louis prepares dinner for both of them. Rose was shocked to see that the Lord had a unique talent for cooking. Everything that Louis put on the table is unfamiliar to Rose. But this was the first time Rose would eat with someone.

Even though she’s the duke’s daughter, the family told Rose to stay in her room and not join the dining room during breakfast and dinner. She was used to it that it became customary for her to eat alone. Even the maids will not accompany her. It has gotten so bad that it reaches the point where she will not eat and instead choose to starve.

Rose will have dinner with someone for the first time in her life. She didn’t realize it, but tears fell to her cheeks when she sat. Louis, on the other side of the table, notices the tears flowing from Rose’s cheeks. It made his heart pound as he gazed in the other direction.

Oh my God! What did I do to make her cry? Don’t tell me this body of mine did something to her every time they have dinner. She’s probably traumatized by this. I must apologize, or this will get unpleasant.

Louis tries to talk to Rose before he can utter his words. Rose said the following terms without stuttering, “thank you,” with a smile that made Louis speechless. Her emerald-colored eyes shine like a beautiful gem pulling Louis towards her. Louis’s face turns red as his heart thumps faster, and he can feel his face increase in temperature. Then the feeling of not having the courage to look at her directly as it would make his heart explode came.

What the heck! Why the hell is this happening? This feeling is uncomfortable, but why do I feel pretty happy. Not to mention why she looks so beautiful and adorable simultaneously. Must control yourself, or you’ll die of a heart attack or diabetes wait, does diabetes even kill.

This feeling is so uncomfortable. Why can’t I directly look at Rose’s eye with such a face? Remember your past life. Things like this shouldn’t be a problem. You trample people regardless of their age or s*x. You are a former giant in business and politics. A woman cannot seduce you to gain favor like it was as easy as eating a cake. Come on. You can do this. Just look at her one more time.

Louis looked at Rose again and what he saw was worse. Roses started to appear behind her as if he was looking at a smartphone’s filter. A view like that made him look away from Rose with a bright red face. Rose did not expect such a reaction from her husband.

Rose now worried, thinking she had done something wrong, making Louis avoid her. She bites her lips in frustration while remembering what she has done to cause her husband to avoid eye contact. The first reason that came to her was the words from the family that belittled her. Their harsh words were imprinted in her mind like they were part of her life.

“We will not eat with you here. How disgusting a crippled and stuttering woman is our sister. Food tastes like dog poo when your here.” It was Rose’s sister’s words.

“Daughter, I suggest you leave this place as the meal would taste stale. Not to mention that I gave birth to an abomination such as you.” Rose’s father spoke loudly that even the servants outside the dining hall could hear.

“I’m sorry, father. I will take my leave now.”

Rose’s maid accompanies her, but she distances herself away from Rose. Whenever she was alone in her room, Rose would hear her maid gossip in front of her door with the other maid. She knows that her assistant hates her and even shows it to her openly. There’s even a time when she was pushed by her maid, causing her to roll down the hill.

The maid did that in the open and in front of her sisters. No one dared to help her, and everyone around her only laughed or smiled in satisfaction. Not to mention a maid carrying dirty water throws it at Rose, dirtying the clothes her late mother bought for her.

Rose, now back in the present, lowers her head after witnessing his husband avoiding eye contact with her. She grabs her cane and stands from her chair. She then spoke to Louis, still avoiding a direct eye with her. With her, a low and shaky tone says, “I’m sorry I-if I-I had dis-gusted yo-you d-dear.”

Louis froze after hearing his wife speak, and now he tries to look at Rose. But this time, Louis saw Rose not smiling as her head was lower, covering her eyes with her red hair. Louis could tell that something was not alright. The atmosphere around them turns heavy, and Louis can tell that this was his fault due to how heavy his shoulders are.

“Wait, aren’t you gonna eat?”

“I-I lost my a-appetite I-I am going to bed.”

“Rose, why are you suddenly like this?”

Rose does not answer Louis and walks away from the table. However, her hands suddenly grab her left arm. Rose looked behind her back and saw Louis looking at her, furious. It causes her to loosen her grip on her cane, and she lowers herself and squats down, protecting her head using her hand.

Louis was shocked to see this reaction from her, and it surprised him even more after she screamed in terror.

“Please do not hurt me, big brother! I promise I will not show myself!”

Louis clenched his fist after hearing Rose as he was speechless by this scene unfolding.

Meanwhile, in the capital, a handsome man with golden hair and fiery red eyes was sitting in a throne room listening to an old man holding a scroll.

“Your majesty, that concludes the report of the new proposal to allow budget for the project that allows man to swim in the land.”

The man with the golden hair yawns after the old man finishes reading the scroll before screaming in rage.

“How stupid! Kill the one who made up with. I think they are looking down on me since I am the youngest Emperor. Is there any update about the Lord I punished by giving him the cursed lands? What was his name again? Lander, Luke, Lamer,Lou?”

“It’s Louis, your majesty.”

“Oh, Louis! Is there anything interesting that happened to that problematic Lord?”

“I’m afraid not, but I hear something interesting.”

“Oh, then tell me what this interesting thing is.”

“I heard that he sent all his workers to vacation, and it seems Louis will do nothing to improve the territory he’s managing now. What an ungrateful lord to receive huge land and not use it to help the Empire.”

The Emperor lets out a sigh, “I thought he would change. I guess I will send a team to get his corpse after three months since that territory is almost called no mans land. It will probably boost my reputation that I am willing to forgive a bastard like him and even give him a decent funeral.”
