Chapter 9 I was never sure what woke me that night. All I know is I opened my eyes, momentarily disoriented as I stared at the medallioned-tin ceiling overhead. Then I remembered where I was. I glanced at the mantel clock, illuminated by the hurricane lamp. Three in the morning. I sat up and listened. The sound of tree frogs drifted through the open window. Nothing more.
