-Helena-
I shouldn’t have said anything, but I was utterly stunned to hear that Wylder didn’t care about status, that he genuinely believed it didn’t matter. It mattered! It had to!
“No one…” I replied.
“You mentioned an alpha,” Wylder stated, pointing at me. “Who?”
“No one!”
“He’s not ‘no one’ if he’s an alpha. Did he reject you because of your status? Is that why you doubt me when I say I don’t care?” he asked.
“I…” I trailed off.
“You don’t even have to answer. I can see it on your face, and I can hear it in your voice,” he informed me, startling me with his perceptiveness. No one had ever been so observant. I was usually invisible, just part of the background.
Wylder suddenly drew nearer, and when I attempted to retreat, he effortlessly captured my legs and drew me closer, placing a hand on my neck and removing the distance between our faces.
“You don’t need to fear me, little mate,” he reassured me. “I don’t care about your status. I just need you.”
“No…”
“Yes,” he promptly interjected.
“I can’t be your mate.”
“Why not?”
Memories of my confrontation with Alpha William and the subsequent flight with my mother flooded my mind, and I averted my gaze from Wylder. He moved even closer, his warm breath grazing my skin.
“Why are you so guarded?” he inquired. “I am your mate. You can confide in me.”
“I don’t know y—” I was on the verge of telling him that I didn’t know him and shouldn’t have to disclose anything, but when I turned my head, we found ourselves incredibly close. There was no space between us whatsoever. The tension thickened, becoming more electrified, and I could barely think with him so near. His eyes were simply mesmerizingly green!
Hey! Snap out of it! We are not here to gaze longingly into his eyes! Remember Carter!
Amaya had been deeply hurt by what transpired. I couldn’t blame her for trusting Wylder even less, yet he remained unmoving, and I forced myself to avert my eyes, though it felt like one of the most challenging tasks I’d ever faced.
“Why is your wolf fighting us too?” he whispered. “I can feel it. She blocks mine out.”
“She…” I trailed off.
“She must have been deeply wounded after you two were rejected,” he concluded.
I looked down, recalling the pain of that rejection, but I quickly reminded myself that I needed to regain control. I couldn’t afford to let another alpha get close to me.
“Wylder…” I turned my head again. But this time he seized the opportunity, and before I knew it, his lips were on mine. I had only ever been kissed by Alpha William, and I had felt repulsed, but now Wylder was kissing me, and… Wow! I couldn’t push him away. I couldn’t think.
His lips moved so expertly against mine, tantalizing and guiding me, and I felt it all the way down to my core, igniting a fire I had never experienced. I let out a small moan, unable to resist, and it only seemed to drive him wilder.
He pushed me down onto the couch and then tore my shirt open. Wylder drew back momentarily, taking me in with glowing eyes, before closing the distance between us and kissing me fiercely. He slipped his tongue into my mouth, his warm hand resting on my stomach.
I gasped with excitement, his touch igniting something within me. I couldn’t think. All I could do was feel, and I loved every sensation. It was like he was banishing all the cold feelings I’d harbored for five years. He made me feel alive again.
“Wylder…” I whispered his name, and he pressed closer, positioning himself between my legs.
No! No! NO!
“Ah! Sh*t…” Suddenly, Wylder pulled back, his bottom lip now bleeding. He lifted a finger to it, and I stared at him, shocked. Had my wolf taken control?
She hadn’t been able to do that for five years, and now she had bitten Wylder! Another alpha we had harmed! We could be killed for that, but Amaya held her head high, as if proud of injuring him.
I continued to look at Wylder, feeling terrified. I was trapped beneath him. He could do anything to me now! But after he examined the blood that was coating his finger, he sucked it clean and then licked his lip before he turned to me, smiling.
“I see my mate enjoys it a little rough. Do you want me tied down so you can have your way with me?” he teased.
Did I want… what?
“I… um… I didn’t…” I stammered.
“No need to explain. I know who did that,” he said, his eyes gleaming, as if his wolf wanted to emerge and challenge mine.
Amaya growled in my head, as if responding to him, but it hurt because she was so loud.
“We are dealing with a stubborn one, I see,” Wylder remarked. “You two aren’t very in sync, are you?”
“Actually… we used to be,” I whispered.
Wylder appeared surprised, then a hint of sadness crossed his expression, as if he had figured out why we weren’t in sync anymore.
“Did she continue to lose her power?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“Then this is probably the first time in a long while you’ve truly felt her, isn’t it?” he inquired.
I nodded.
“I thought so. She’s quite feisty,” he said.
“She likes to make her presence known,” I half-joked, which elicited a smile from Wylder.
We were still on the couch together, but I was coming out of my trance, and I soon realized the position we were in. I quickly grabbed the two sides of my shirt, holding it together around me.
“I should probably… go,” I whispered.
“Why?” he asked.
“Why?” I echoed.
“Yes, why?”
“I… never intended to stay. I need to—”
“Go home and collect your things?” he finished with a smug smile.
“Just go home,” I corrected.
“And then what?”
“What do you mean, ‘then what’? I have work tomorrow,” I told him.
“What work?” he asked.
“I… clean.”
“For whom?” he asked.
“A pack,” I replied.
“What pack?” he pressed.
“Not this one.”
He sighed and rolled his eyes.
“I am aware. Why do you insist on being so secretive?” he inquired. “I will know all your secrets now as your mate.”
“I don’t think so,” I snapped.
“Well, I do.”
“Well, your words don’t hold power!” I exclaimed.
“They do. I am an alpha, after all,” he teased me, throwing my own words back at me.
“Get off and let me go,” I demanded.
“No.”
“Wylder!”
