Chapter 6: Run for it

3502 Words
Lexi’s POV I saw those cop cars and I had a feeling they were heading to bust Daisy’s party. So much for me leaving Jason in the woods and going home. The streets are going to have cops everywhere driving to pick up kids who are out past curfew and under the influence. I groan, “s**t” and turn around to face Jason.  Both of us must have been thinking the same thing because he said, “We’re stuck aren’t we?” I nod annoyed as Jason pulls out his phone and says, “Zach just texted the cops busted Daisy’s party.” I then notice him throw the rest of the joint on the ground and step on it before kicking some leaves to cover it. Don’t need to get caught with possession. “Figured, but you know these woods back up to her house and cops are definitely going to chase a few people into these woods.”  I grab my phone from my pocket and text Peter. Me: I heard the party was busted, are you okay? Peter: Yeah, the two of us left before the party got busted, so we are good. Me: well have fun tonight, remember safe s*x is the best s*x ;) I smirk to myself as I write that and Jason asks, “Who you texting?” “Peter, just checking to make sure he didn’t get arrested.”  I take a seat back on the ground trying to figure out how the two of us are going to get out of this situation.  Jason sits next to me and asks, “Do you think Cameron is gay?” My eyebrows shoot up because I am kind of surprised by that question. I know the truth but I am not outing the kid. He needs to tell his friends when he is ready. I ask, “Whose Cameron?” He nods, “He was the blonde kid that went to play with Peter when we went into the closet.” “Oh, I have no clue. I don’t know the guy. Why?” He shrugs, “I don’t know, I just have a feeling he is. I mean there is no problem if he is, I just hope he will tell me.” “I will tell you this, just be his friend and make sure he knows that you are there for him. If he has anything to tell you, he will when he is ready.” I can’t help but smile slightly hearing him say this. It is nice to know that he has his friend’s back no matter what. Maybe he has changed slightly.  He looks at me and asks, “So, what are we going to do?”  I get up and peek out of the woods and notice a cop parked right in front of the park, “There is a cop waiting by the entrance of the park, so I guess just wait until they are gone.”  Something catches Jason’s eyes and he looks towards something deeper into the woods and mumbles, “f**k”  I turn to see what he is staring at and I see someone walking through the woods with a flashlight and I instantly know it is a cop.  Jason stands up and grabs my hand, “We got to hide.”  I follow him and he is still holding my hand and pulling me somewhere. I don’t bother to pull my hand away because it is not the time. Jason points to some brush and the two of us crawl into them and throw our hoods up to hide more. It is a good thing we are both wearing black so we blend in with the night. We are pretty covered in the brush. Jason sits down and I sit in front of him hugging my legs since I do not have pants on and only wearing shorts, and my legs are getting cold. Jason must have noticed that I was starting to get cold so he wrapped his arms around me to pull me closer. I rested my head against his chest while he buried his face into my shoulder. We look like a huge black blob. Hopefully, the cop doesn’t notice us.  As much as I don’t want to be in his arms right now, we don’t really have a choice. Both of us are high and it is way past curfew. However, right now being in his arms is kind of comforting. I am going to blame the weed on this, but he is really warm. Plus, he was always one of the best huggers I know. When we were younger, his hugs always cheered me up. I whisper against his chest, “You know getting arrested is on my bucket list.”  He chuckles slightly, “It was on mine.”  I lift my head slightly and he looks down at me, “What do you mean was?” He smiles, “Justin, Zach, and I got arrested earlier this summer for setting off illegal fireworks.”  I laugh slightly but try hard not to make any noises so the cop walking through the woods doesn’t find us. He smirks, “I mean we can get that crossed off your bucket list.”  I shake my head and we hear the cop say as he points his flashlight towards us even though he is 20 feet away, “I see you two.”  I grab Jason’s hand and pull him up  to start running in the opposite direction, “Nah, because running from the cops is on that list too.” He looks at me surprised before he lets go of my hand saying, “Run for it!” The two of us book it hoping he won’t catch up to us. Lucky for us the cop is kind of bigger and older so the two of us can outrun him.  He yells, “Get back here you two!”  The two of us are laughing at this point and we take a hard left jumping over a log. He laughs, “You know what this reminds me of?” I ask “What?”  I can see him smiling out of the corner of my eye, “Back in 5th grade when we ran from that cop.”  I laugh slightly thinking back to that moment. Jason and I snuck onto the baseball field behind our school which is private property one day during the summer. The security guard of the school yelled at us to leave and started to come towards us probably to make sure we were getting off. But I yelled run so the two of us grabbed our mitts and ball and ran away by jumping over the fence. The security guard was extremely confused when we did that. Jason laughed, “You have always been a bad influence on me.”  The cop was starting to gain on us as we ran out of the woods. There is a lake behind the woods that a lot of people go swimming in, kayaking, and canoeing. How do we get out of this?  I smirked, “Some things never change.” He looked at me confused as I ran towards the lake. Jason asked, “What are you doing?”  I ran down the shore with Jason following me. There are canoes that can be rented from this building, the only problem is there is another cop car parked by the building.  This is going to be a fun story to tell later in life. I grab one of the canoes and Jason immediately knows what I am thinking as he says, “We’re going to go to jail if we get caught.”  We push the canoe in the lake as I say, “Well, we better not get caught.” The cop that was chasing us yells, “Stop them.”  At that point the other cops notice us and now 3 guys run towards the lakeshore.  I can hear one of them said into his walkie, “We got two teenagers who stole a canoe and are now canoeing across the Blue Lake. We need someone parked on 4th street to pick these two up when they get across.”  Jason is in the back of the canoe paddling, “Why did I let you talk me into this?” I look over my shoulder at him, “Because you are the one who wanted to hang out while your clothes dried.”  He shakes his head at me, “So, how do we get across without getting arrested?”  I shrug, “Didn’t think that far ahead.”  He rolls his eyes before saying, “Go left, there is a place at the edge of the lake where we can get out.”  I do as he says and we take our canoe in that direction. As I am looking forward, I ask “why did you kiss me?” He stammers, “Ummm, umm… to be honest, I didn’t know how to answer your original question.” I just shake my head, “Whatever, don’t do it again.” “Whatever, you say Lex.”  He then asks, “So who knows that you smoke?” I shrug, “I mean Phil and my friends know. To be honest, I don’t smoke that often, just when I am trying to relax usually.” “What about softball?” “What about it?” “I mean don’t they do drug tests.” I look at him, “Yeah, I don’t smoke when I am season. Probably the same as you.” “Are you going to try out for the team? And do you still play center?” “Probably and yes” He mumbled, “So at least something is still the same with you.”  I stopped rowing and turned to face him fully, “I am still Alexis Kay Walker, I just grew up and learned how to stand up for myself.”  He nods saying, “I am starting to see that. And for some reason, I still see you as the adorable 6th-grade girl when we were friends. I mean people can change a lot after almost 5 years.” His eyes slightly trail my body slightly. Did he say I was adorable? I blush slightly, “I know I look different because someone didn’t recognize me.” He shakes his head, “Sorry, I wasn’t expecting to see you again. Plus I didn’t expect you to look like that.”  I smile and turn back around, “I will take that as a compliment.”  He chuckles, “You should.” Is he flirting?  After about 5 minutes of canoeing, we made it to the spot he was talking about. We climb out of the canoe and pull it up onshore. There are a few trees concealing us. I look at him and ask, “Now what, cause I am tweaking right now with the cops after us.”  He grabs my arms and pulls me close looking down at me, “This was your idea, I don’t want to hear it.” He holds me there for a second and I like the feeling of his body against mine. My eyes flick to his lips for a second and I realize this weed is just making me horny.  I bite my lip looking away from him trying to think what we can do now and I hear him let out a slight groan. Guess it has the same effects on him as well.  This is a bad idea we are not doing that, it would complicate everything. We are not even friends, so this wouldn’t work. I move away from him and peek past the trees trying to think what we can do.  I notice the cop car is about 25 yards down the street and he is facing where he assumes we would exit the lake. I look across the street and notice that if we run straight we could cut through someone’s yard and we would end up near a hill that we could climb and hide at the top of it until possibly morning. I look at Jason and fill him in on the plan. He nods and we get ready to run. We take one last look towards the cop and make a run for it. We got to the side of the person’s house and the cop didn’t notice us.  The two of us approach the hill and start walking up it until we reach the top. Gosh I am so tired now, all this running, canoeing, and walking is exhausting and it is 2 in the morning. The two of us make it to the top and just crash on the ground.  “You tired” he sits up slightly asking. I nod, “Hell yeah, now are you going to answer my question?”  He sits up fully and I move to lay down next to him looking up at his stress-filled face. He wipes his hand across his face before saying, “To be honest, I don’t know why I did it. I just did. All my friends were saying stuff and I was just being a follower. My friends were just saying those things and I was too much of a coward to stand up for my friend even when I should have. And I just kept doing it or I didn’t stop it. I didn’t mean anything I said.”  I look at him confused, “What do you mean?” He bites his bottom lip before looking down at me, “You know how you said you had a huge crush on me.” I nod not understanding what he is trying to get at, “I had a crush on you too.”  I sat up surprised, “Seriously?”  He looked embarrassed, “Yeah, I did. Which makes me saying all that stuff about you worse.”  I look at him confused, "Why did you like me?" He just smiled and shook his head at me while blushing. *** Jason’s POV I was staring into her big hazel eyes, just thinking man how did we get here. She was right even though she has changed she is still Alexis Kay Walker. She is still crazy and reckless, always willing to take a risk, a terrible influence on me, funny as hell, and God she has gotten so pretty since I last saw her. I always thought if the two of us remained friends we would be doing crazy s**t like this. I mean I never thought we would get high, steal a canoe, and outrun the cops, but something similar.  I remember back in 5th grade when we ran from that security guard, which we didn’t need to since he was just telling us to leave, I thought she was crazy and reckless, but I loved every minute of us running for it. We jumped the fence and I grabbed her hand as the two of us ran through the neighborhood. Whenever I would hear that country song “Cop Car” by Keith Urban on the radio I would always think back to that moment. A little 11 year old me just wanted to fall in love with her in the back of a cop car. And here we are again, at 16. Watching her running for it with that cop chasing us, she just looked so free. The girl in that song was right, running for it would make for a good story though. She was waiting for my response and all I could say was, “Why wouldn’t I have liked you?” She looked at me confused, “Excuse me?” I smiled leaning closer to her, “I had a crush on you since the first day we met. You were this little girl making sure I didn’t feel let out. I blushed so hard when you held my hand and when you gave me my nickname.” I then looked down and mumbled to myself, “I miss when you call me Jacey.” I looked back into her eyes and I knew she heard me when I could see that glint of sadness in her eyes like she missed when the two of us were friends. “But after that, I was so f*****g gone at 6 years old. I thought you were so funny, crazy, reckless, and you always looked so damn adorable and cute in those oversized glasses.” I moved a strand of her hair out her face as I said, “You still do.” And I watched her cheeks turn a shade of pink as she rolled her eyes.  I looked down at her lips when she wasn’t looking. I know she said not to kiss her again, but I don’t think I can listen to that. I then notice her run her hands down her legs like she is cold. I quickly unzipped Phil’s hoodie and draped them over her legs. She looked at me, “Aren’t you going to be cold?” I shake my head no, “I will be fine.”  She shakes her head at me as she asks, “Why are you telling me this?” I move closer to her, “Because you asked for the truth. The truth is I had the biggest crush on you and I was f*****g i***t for hurting you. And I am so sorry.”  She looks down, “You have already said that.”  “And I am going to keep saying it until you accept it and you agree to be my friend again.”  She lets out a sigh, “I don’t know. I mean it has been years, we don't even know each other anymore.” I nod, “I know, but we can change that. Also, I realize tonight, you are still that crazy, reckless girl I always knew, the one who runs without thinking.”  She laughed, “Hey, I just knew it would make for a good story one day.”  I can’t help but smile as my eyes go to her lips and I notice her doing the same. I know she said not to kiss her again, but f**k that. I leaned in more and I watched her eyes begin to close like she was waiting for it. Before my lips landed on hers, I said, “Just promise me we will get arrested together one day.”  Her eyes opened and she whispered “What, why” But I didn’t answer her as I kissed her. And this time she didn’t push me off. My hands went to her waist as hers went to my face and hair. I pulled her onto my lap and pressed her against my body.  I traced her bottom lip with my tongue and she gave me access willingly. As the two of us were making out my hands made their way under the back of her shirt. She isn’t wearing a bra right now and her skin feels so soft. As the kiss deepened she tugged slightly on my hair and I let out a groan.  I could feel myself getting hard and I mumbled against her lips, “Looks like your kisses have the same effect on me like they did all those years.” She pushed me down so I was lying flat on my back and her straddling me. She moved her lips to my neck saying, “Shut up, I have always been a good kisser.” I moaned as nipped my neck slightly saying, “That is the f*****g truth.” One of my hands found one of hers as she interlocked our fingers and placed our hands on the side of my head. My other hand went to her ass and I heard her let out a little squeal as I squeezed it. I have no clue what is about to happen between the two of us. Or what is going to become of us? But what I do know is I am so damn glad, I followed her home.
