The moon hung high and silent, as it witnessed our failure. I started towards the house, the damp earth beneath my feet squelching with each frustrated step I took. There were still hints of Alexandra’s scent. It lingered in the air, mingling with the pine. But it was not as strong as it was when we got here. She must have heard us coming and escaped.
Or maybe someone in the house heard us coming and alerted her to leave.
“Who is in the house?” I asked Marcus.
“Her father and her brother, Jai,” he replied.
