Chapter 2 Not even a Fiancée

1163 Words
"Do you know why I acquiesced in grandma's behavior and let you live here?" "No man would turn down a free bedmate."   As if in a daunted way, Edward's words came to Chloe’s ears from time to time. Her body suddenly softened and she held on to the railing behind her. Coolness crept up her back.   It turned out that bedmate was his definition of her and she didn’t have much of a choice in the matter. He slept with her, but he wasn't going to give her the status as Mrs. Lincoln. "Mrs. Lincoln, are you all right?" A young maid stepped forward and supported her.   Chloe tried to shake her head and say she was fine, but the words stuck in her throat. Meanwhile, another maid whispered, "Mrs. Lincoln? Don't call her that. What was the use of the old lady acquiescing in her? Mr. Lincoln doesn't agree to the marriage. She's not even a fiancée!" The maid's voice was soft, but it sounded like a depth charge in the quiet hall, exploding in everyone's ears. "Isn't it? She was at best a woman who had climbed into Mr. Lincoln's bed. But with all the women Mr. Lincoln has slept with, she's just one in a million." "Probably the least favored one."   The servants were emboldened by the thought of Mr. Lincoln's "peculiar and unfavorable treatment" of Chloe. They exchanged words and chatted happily. Chloe's face grew darker and darker as she listened to the whispered taunts. She forced herself to suppress the grievance that gushed up in her heart and forced herself to smile. This was Edward's revenge on her, and it would not stop. His hatred for her may not be over for the rest of his life. Chloe's place of work was not originally in Caesars Entertainment, but she could not resist the request of Edward's grandma and was forcibly arranged beside Edward. So Edward got it right when he called her Secretary White.   Caesars Entertainment was the legacy of generations of the Lincolns and was now naturally inherited by Edward.       Edward spent seven years building it into an entertainment empire. Caesars Entertainment now had an immeasurable position in the Entertainment industry, creating nearly half of the well-known actresses in the Entertainment industry. Elsa Wilson, who recently had an affair with a movie actor, and Dora Jones, the host of TR Live, were also from Caesars Entertainment.   "Miss White, here is a document that needs to be sent to each department, and a statement that needs to be sent to President Office for signature after your review. The statement is very important, please don't lose it." Gina left a stack of files on Chloe's desk and walked away.   Chloe took her fingers off the mouse and thumbed through the files. Then she was torn to remember that she had to go to the President's Office. No one at the company knew anything about her murky relationship with Edward or their relationship. But she was too timorous to face Edward collectedly as if nothing had happened.   Summing up a lot of courage, Chloe stood at the door of the President's Office on the seventeenth floor and knocked on the door. There was dead silence. She raised her hand and knocked again.   Still, no one answered. Chloe took a breath and was about to knock on the door for the third time when someone in the office popped up to remind her kindly, "Miss White, Mr. Lincoln has just been in the conference room for a meeting of our senior management. He is not expected back for a while. If you have any papers, leave them on his desk first."   She took a daze for a moment, scanned the office area, and found that there were not many people here. They probably went to the meeting together. "Okay, thank you." She smiled and thanked the clerk. Chloe pressed the button on Edward’s Office door.   It was not the first time Chloe entered his office, but every time she came in, she was shocked by the cleanness and tidiness before her eyes. Edward was sheerly a neat freak. Every time they shared a bed, several servants would wipe down her whole body, even her hair.   Edward's office, like him, was clear without a trace of impurities.   Putting the papers on the sandalwood desk, Chloe was ready to leave. Her eyes were inadvertently drawn to a picture shelved in a drawer Unable to control her curiosity, she pulled out the photo.   This was an old yellowed photo. There were already signs of wear and tear on the edge of the photo. It seemed that the owner often caressed it with his fingers.   But when Chloe saw the person in the picture, she was overwhelmed by astonishment. The perky girl with the preppy skirt, long braids, and a bright smile was Chole herself! This was a picture of her freshman year! How did Edward get this picture!   Clutching the photo, Chloe was puzzled. She did not put the photograph back but held it until a dark voice came from behind her. "What are you doing here? "   Chloe's hand holding the photo tightened again. She turned around in a panic, subconsciously putting the hand holding the photo behind her back. She tried to force a smile on her pretty face. "Have you finished your meeting?" Inside her, however, there was already uncontrollable tension and uneasiness. "I... I came to drop off some papers for you, and I saw you weren't there, so I just, I put the papers in first..." Chole faltered.   Edward, for sure, enjoyed watching her panic. "Now that I've got my things delivered, well, I guess I’d better go." Could she go now? A little shudder coursed through her. Edward said nothing. He was wearing a suit over his arm, a simple white shirt, and had a stunning air. His cold dark eyes and thin pale lips showed little superfluous expression. He just slightly narrowed his phoenix eyes, but also with a thread of force. He stood at the door and noticed the slight movement she had made just now. He stared at her hidden arm and walked slowly toward her. "What's that in your hand?" "He said in a husky voice, with some amusement.   Chloe swallowed. As Edward approached, she drew back a little. The palm where the photo was hidden had grown a thin layer of sweat. "Um...Nothing." She shook her head, nervous. Edward didn't buy it. He turned his head, and Chloe quickly ducked away. Her heart rapped against her ribcage. This action caused Edward's pretty brow to wrinkle.   Hardly giving her another chance to react, he took a swift step forward, his thick chest pressed against her, and she was pushed against the table, his long arms extending behind her. As Chole's palms went cold, Edward waved the photo with his long fingers triumphantly in front of her.
