There was excitement in the air when they woke Halloween morning. Another cold snap had arrived the night before and there was frost on the windows in their apartment. The sisters were sitting in Rebecca’s kitchen as they usually did on morning when she cooked, which was most mornings. Paige was hanging onto her hot cup of coffee, trying to absorb the warm fragrant steam from the cup. She had dressed for warmth, ready to go down to the station and face the day.
