"Skyla slow down," Marie huffs as she runs to catch up to me entering the hallway.
"Why do you look so flustered?" I asked glancing off my shoulder and giggling at her. I knew why, but she thought she could hide it, so I didn't say anything.
School was well on its way to Halloween which meant we had been here a couple of months now. I spent my afternoons helping Maria and Mark in the diner, the rest of my free time was spent with me, Marie, Mark, Preston and his friend Terr hanging out. And then of course, Jaxon, he always seemed to steal his moments with me, and I let him. The thing that I seem to know though, and no one else did, was how obvious it was that Preston and Marie had it bad for each other. I refuse to play matchmaker though; this has to be all on them.
"We are going to be late." She squealed running down the hall to our first class. Evidently, we had all our classes together and that first day I was so lost in myself I hadn't even noticed.
The day went by without a hitch, and we kept hearing the buzz about some party this weekend. It was supposed to be a costume party since it was Halloween. Marie and Preston asked me five hundred times if I was going, and I kept telling them no.
It was now time to close the diner and me to follow my nightly routine of walking home, only to meet Jaxon and let him join me.
"Come on, it could be fun." Marie begged as she locked the door.
"Nope, no way I want to be wining and dining with the big wigs." We snickered
"Just promise you will think about it," she stuck her bottom lip out and batted those long eyelashes, "PWEASE......"
I just rolled my eyes and turned around to walk away," See you tomorrow."
The weather was getting cooler here, and I think I even heard the mention of snow starting in the higher elevations in the next couple months. I pulled the collar of my jacket up around my neck and tucked my head as I rounded the corner. Thank goodness I had gotten used to this; I side stepped the arms waiting to catch me with a giggle. "Hey Jaxon."
"Darn you are getting to use to this," he chuckled and fell into step next to me. "So, you aren't coming to my party?"
I stopped and turned to look at him, "Your party?"
"Yea the Halloween party, we throw it every year. My parents do a big adult thing in the conference room on the other end of the house, and all the kids get the party in the other area." He took my hand and laced his fingers through mine, at first, I wouldn't let him do it, but it has become natural to me, so this is how we spend our evenings. "Please Skyla, won't you be Juliet to your Romeo?"
I laughed so hard I started coughing a fit as we stopped, and he patted my back softly. "Seriously, Romeo and Juliet, no way if I go, no one will ever know it's me."
"So that's a maybe then, huh?" I just looked at him. "Fine, game on then, dress your best, I will find you." He smirked, that crazy confident smirk. He scratched the back of his neck with his free hand, "So um, I have a question?"
"You mean other than the costume party?"
"Yea, um, will you come to the game Friday night? It's our first home game of the season and I would love to see you there."
We continued walking, and I could tell he was antsy, but I let him wallow in it, while I mauled it over. What is the worse that could happen right? No one needs to know I am there with him; I can just go because it is a school function, and no one must know. I have managed to float under the radar this far, why not? We stopped at the walkway in front of my house as usual when I turned to him, "Okay." I stepped forward tip toeing and pecked him on the cheek, before turning and running as hard as I could to my room.
I slammed the door and slid down the back of my door, why did I do that? I have never kissed anyone; my first kiss was meant for Isaac and here I am giving it to him. I instantly felt a little nauseous, for what I wasn't sure, guilt, puppy love, anxiety, oh I don't know. I growled in frustration running my hands up and down my face.
My phone alerted me that I had a text and I picked it up checking to see it was from none other than Jaxon.
JAXON: Good night, Princess. Just give me a chance. I promise I will never let you fall.
I looked and read and re read the message a hundred times deciding whether I should respond, did I want to, maybe I did, nope definitely not, I need to talk to Isaac.
Instead of texting back, I rang Isaac. After it rang, a girl answered with a very seductive Hello. I looked at the phone and then held it back to my ear, with a frown on my face, before checking one more time I had dialed the right number.
I cleared my throat, "Um, is Isaac around?"
"Yea, just a sec please."
She must have covered the phone because it went deadly silent on the other end, for some reason I didn't even really care that some girl answered his phone. "Hello," Came his all too familiar innocent boy next door voice.
"Hey Isaac." I beamed; I missed my friend.
"Skyla, oh my gosh, it's so good to hear from you." My heart pitter pattered at the sound of his voice. "How are you? Are they treating you well? Why haven't you called? I mean I only get a text like once a week if I am lucky. It is so good to hear your voice."
I giggled like the schoolgirl I am, "Well I have much to tell." I took a deep breath, telling him all about what's happened since we have been here. I did leave out the information about Jaxon, that was between me and him, and I wasn't quite sure what it was yet, so I didn't want to say anything. "So, tell me how you have been?"
"Well, I actually want to ask you a question?" I hummed in response, "Would you like to go to an opening with me two days after Thanksgiving? It's no big deal, but I got that contract and start modeling for hot spot jean company after the first of the year. So, they are having a big opening and I need a date."
"Yes," I whisper yelled. "I will tell mom and dad. Just text me all the information."
"Good deal, well listen babe, I got to go. But I will see you soon." And with that he hung up, I am sure I heard the girl giggling in the background, but I know it's probably just my paranoia. He would stay true to our commitment, of that, I am sure.
I can still be friends with Jaxon though, and you support your friends. I picked my phone up and texted him back really quick.
ME: Good night, and I will go.
I threw my phone on the charger and did my nightly routine before crashing and letting the darkness take me away blissfully.
