Emily POV
Emily’s POV
I felt blood drain from my face as I came fact to face with my past.
What do you do when you come face to face with your past?
Run…hide…scream…
All of these emotions flashed through my head and yet I couldn’t do anything. I just stood rooted to the ground.
“Roisin?” I heard my cousin Gail call my name “Is that really you?” she asked in awe.
Like every smart person, I decided that the world need not know about this part of my life, so, I was going to pull Gail to one side of the house and explain that my name is Emily and I want to remain that way but before I could move a muscle…Sebastian pulled up in front of the house. There was no place to hide.
Sebastian handed the key to his Rover and walked briskly towards us “Miss Connor,” he said as soon as he was close “I see you’ve met Emily” he walked to me and gave me a side hug “Emily is my wife’s best friend,” he explained to Gail whose facial reactions had gone from surprised, confused to surprised again.
“When did you come in?” Sebastian turned to me.
“Last night, so I decided to come Amy. I was about calling you, you know,” from the corner of my eyes, I could feel Gail staring at me in disbelieve.
“Have you spoke to Amy yet?” He asked me again.
“Yeah, I took some food to her which Nana gave me…”.
Sebastian’s eyes lit up in hope “and she ate?” he interrupted me.
“No,” I shook my head in regret “She practically chased me out of the room. She’s wasting, Seb, we need to help her,”.
“Yeah, I know,” he swallowed “That’s why I brought Miss Connor, she’s a therapist,” he turned to Gail who haven’t moved a muscle since Sebastian arrived.
“Miss Connor?” he shook her arm, “Are you alright?” he asked her “You look surprise and stunned. What is it?” he pursued.
Gail’s eyes moistened as she turned to look at me “I am fine, Mr Carter,” she started “It’s just that the woman standing here has a striking resemblance to one of my cousin – a long lost cousin,” she added “She left the house when she was Sixteen and no one’s heard from. Her since then. So, Emily here reminds me so much of her. I thought it was her in fact,” she chuckled wiping the side of her eyes were tears had escaped from.
“Seriously?” Sebastian’s watchful eyes turned to me “Do you know her?” he asked.
Now this is the beginning of my problem – a huge dilemma.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from working with both Sebastian and Austin who are practically billionaire’s; it’s their constant quest for truth. The duo hated lies and when I and Austin had been an item before, he told me that the day I lie to Sebastian or him, that it’ll be the day I lose all of the respect and trust that have been built before which will never be gotten back again. I never wanted to lie to Sebastian…not because he’s a Carter but because Sebastian was totally different.
I opened my mouth to talk but nothing seems to come out “Yes,” I finally muttered.
“You’re Roisin? Roisin Byrne?” Gail advanced towards me and touched my arm. She was already crying.
“Little wonder you don’t have a last name and almost never talk about yourself,” Sebastian observed quietly “So you’re Irish?” he smiled gently.
“You’re not angry at me?” I was stunned. I was expecting to be accused of being a fake.
“No, not at all,” he chuckled “I would have if you had lied to me though. I hate lies besides everyone keeps things they don’t really want to share with the world, the only thing we should constantly pray for is that these things we don’t know don’t break us when we finally do know. Don’t worry, Emily or Roisin,” he snorted “You can tell me all about yourself later, now, we need to get Miss Connor to my wife,”.
We continued into the house; from the corner of my eyes, I could feel Gail’s eyes on me.
“So, is there anything you need to know before you meet with my wife?” Sebastian suddenly stopped and turned to face Gail.
“Well, you could tell me a little about her and if this is the first time she’s slipping into depression,” Gail replied.
Sebastian nodded and settled himself on a couch, pointing towards another an indication for Gail to get comfortable “My wife Amy is generally a happy person,” he started “She’s kind, very emotional, a neat-picker, a perfectionist and she loves as much as she hates but believe me, she doesn’t bear grudges. The first time she nearly slipped into depression was a year ago after some deeds about her from the past surfaced and the internet was on fire plus lots of people had so much to say. Eventually, we were able to help her out of that,”.
Gail nodded severally and kept making small notes in the notepad on her knee.
“Do you know anything about her childhood? How she grew up? Where she grew up and generally how life has affected her?” Gail asked.
Sebastian’s brow rose and fell as he gazed at her in confusion “I don’t understand,” he said.
“Well, I really don’t want you to go into too much details about her, I just need a sketch, a rough sketch of the kind of person she is, so it can help me know what methods I can apply and you know she’s depressed, she wouldn’t be exactly as vocal as I want her to be,” Gail explained.
Sebastian nodded severally before continuing “Okay, she grew up in Korea and her relationship with her mom, her step-father and step-siblings is not exactly what I would call nice but somehow Amy doesn’t look or behave like what she’s been through. She tends to be very optimistic about life and doesn’t give up no matter what,”.
Gail scribbled into her notepad before looking up “Can you tell me if there’s been any event lately that made her so happy?”.
“The baby,” Sebastian answered automatically with a soft smile on his face “You know,” he chuckled softly “We got pregnant the first time we had s*x and she didn’t know she was pregnant,”.
“Wait,” Gail lifted her right hand to stop Sebastian “I don’t understand. You got pregnant the first time you had s*x in your marriage or what?”.
“She was a virgin,” Sebastian chuckled “We shared only romantic intimcacy when we were not married but the first time I had her, she was a virgin,”.
“Wow!” Gail gasped “I am surprised. Please continue, Mr Carter,”.
“At first, it was difficult to come in terms with her being pregnant especially since she was having a really good year, career wise but somehow, it grew into her and you would always catch her whispering to the baby, dancing, taking strolls. She was so happy and couldn’t wait to meet her,”.
“Can you say you’ve been a supportive husband?”.
Gail’s question threw Sebastian off balance. While he gathered himself to answer her, I turned and stared at Gail whose face was contorted in seriousness. Gail had been one of my closest cousins growing up. She was shy and would often tell me how much she admired and wanted to be like me when she grows up.
We were close, almost inseparable but looking at her speaking with Sebastian made me believe that people can change a lot. Gone was the shyness, the stutters when she talks because of how scared she used to be when speaking with people.
It had been replaced with confidence and a clear indication that she knew exactly what she was doing.
“I have tried my best to always be the man my wife truly desires. I’ve supported her career 100%, plus I love Amy too much and she knows that. I am not perfect either, I am not a saint but I think I do my best,” Sebastian answered.
“Can you remember if you had any argument before the incidence or a fight or any disagreements?” Gail asked while doodling in her notepad. I wondered what she was writing.
“Is there anything you want to achieve with these questions?” Sebastian shifted in his seat with unease.
It reminded me suddenly of the conversation I had with Amy earlier this morning when I had arrived. She told me that she had gotten into an argument with Sebastian and he left angrily.
“Well, this is a bit complicated, Mr Carter. The point your wife is can be dangerous if she assumes that you had a hand in the baby’s death. Apart from blaming herself which is 100% sure, if there has been an argument prior to the day the child died, it’s natural as humans to want to pin our misfortunes on someone else, so I really need to know,” she explained.
“Well, yeah,” he shrugged indecisively “We did have an argument a night before the day she was rushed to the hospital and I walked away angrily,” he explained.
“Okay,” Gail nodded and scribbled into her note pad.
“How is your relationship with her since the incident?” she continued.
“Very bad,” Sebastian frowned “I feel like with each passing day, I am losing my wife. We’ve been through worst situations…” He trailed off and cleared his throat “Maybe something not as worst as losing our child but we’ve been in relationship threatening situation that could have caused us our love and trust but we’ve always pulled out and grow stronger than before,”.
He sighed “but this is different. She prefers to keep to herself all day long and goes around the house draped in black. I’ve tried to talk and to show her that I can do everything within my capacity but it goes unnoticed because for some reason she wants to just be sad and she keeps forgetting that we were both parents to our child. I feel too you too,” Sebastian complained.
Gail pursed her lips and turned to Sebastian with displeasure written boldly on her face.
“You really don’t understand, do you?” she started “Your wife would of course feel the baby more than you. She carried it, felt its movements, and all of that, so, it’s totally natural if she’s sadder than you. It’s not her being selfish or not acknowledging the fact that you’re her husband and the baby’s father. These things are beyond explanations and you should also understand that there’s a bond between every woman and her baby…” Gail sniffed “unexplainable bond. So, I can only imagine how empty she feels especially, since the baby was one minute in her stomach and the next not there,”.
Sebastian nodded wordlessly.
“Anyways, i’ve heard everything you said and you need to keep being as supportive as possible. Amy needs you this time more than ever and it shouldn’t matter if she’s receptive of the love or not. She just needs you to be there and stay even when she’s asking you to go. I would resume therapy two days from today. Since this is going to be quite a lengthy project, I need to tie certain loose ends at work and also come up with the best strategy that will help, Amy,”.
“Okay,” Sebastian nodded “I hope you come up with the best,”.
Gail nodded her acceptance and stood up “I’ll keep in touch if I need any other information. Have a nice day Mr Carter,” she nodded towards Sebastian and me before walking towards the door.
As an afterthought, I stood up and ran towards her.
“Gail, Gail,” I called out repeatedly as I raced to meet up with her.
She stopped and turned to wait for me.
“Gail,” I smiled when I reached her, trying to catch my breath “You move really fast,” I commented.
“Yeah,” she murmured “I was in a hurry, in any case,” she added. I knew she didn’t want to talk to me.
“Listen Gail,” I started “there’s an explanation to everything, I promise and I wish and do hope that you wait to hear mine. A lot of things have happened but believe me, I had to do what I did back then for my own sanity and safety,”.
“Yeah,” she nodded in amusement.
“When there’s time, I promise to explain everything to you but for now could you please not tell anyone that you saw me?” I clasped my hand together “Pretty please,”.
Gail blinked in surprise at she stared at me “Wow!” she exclaimed “You’re still that selfish, self-centered Emily from childhood,” she nodded her head severally fighting back tears “I was expecting even a sorry or an apology for why you left so suddenly but of course, here you are, being worried that I will tell the entire family that I saw you,” she wiped a tear “Not to worry, Roisin or is it Emily?” she mocked “You were dead to us a long time ago, so, this doesn’t make any difference and I will pretend like I never saw you, so rest your mind. Have a wonderful day, Miss Emily,” she nodded and walked past me.
An empty feeling…settled over me.
