freedom (a short story by Awana favour)
some watched miss Sandra share their maths test, others just did other things people like Olivia. she knew within that she would fail. people like Peter okey would be sure of an A, but Olivia she knew she would fail. miss Sandra came towards Olivia's desk and signed. Olivia was pretty, she was tall her brown skin beautiful and she was tall. a beautiful girl yet so poor in academics. "you are not ashamed of yourself are you?" miss Sandra asked. Olivia said nothing, the class looked at her, she's dumb for life she knew that. "in ss2 which course do you want to go for?" miss Sandra asked. Olivia exhaled nervous she knew her class mates would laugh at her again, it creeped her, her whole life full of embarrassing moments. "science" she said more like a whisper and everyone laughed. "how will the school put you in science if you are a failure in mathematics? "a student asked. miss Sandra glared at the student who turned elsewhere. "meet me in the staff room after school" miss Sandra said before walking out of the class. *********** Sandra felt nervous, her heart racing, as miss Sandra talked. every teacher complained she was failing maths, as if they were all her maths teacher. "what do you intend to be in future?" miss Sandra asked her. "a Doctor"she said slowly, she never tells anyone that. she loved to be an Doctor just like her late father. she would do something about her younger sister who is blind. but no one understands her, no one. "and you think you will be a doctor if you fail science subjects especially maths. I want to see your study time table tomorrow okay? " " okay"came Olivia's reply. ************* Amarachi ran after Olivia, cos Olivia was sure walking fast. "Olivia" she called after her, until Olivia eventually stopped. Amarachi was pretty with a fair skin, average in height, rounded lips and a braided hair. "what?" Olivia asked "what did maths teacher tell you?" Amarachi asked. "nothing much, just advice on improving in mathematics" Olivia said." why are you cold on me? "Amarachi asked, as Olivia started walking." I want you to trust me am your friend, did I do anything? "Amarachi asked sincerely worried. Olivia signed. "nothing, Amara just let me be" Olivia said walking even faster. Amarachi gave a frustrating sign. ************* Olivia knew her mother would know about the sharing of maths test, she probably called miss Sandra to ask her. she had entered the parlor to see her mom, her younger sister who is blind, her name was Kate. and her eider brother Luke. already in final year. "did you manage to even get half over ten?" Luke asked. mother starred at her, waiting for her reply. "yes actually I got half" she said. "why maths?" mother ask, she was a junior maths teacher. "mum please not now" Olivia said, her mother had sparked." not now? are you not ashamed of yourself?" Olivia tried so hard not to cry, is she the only one bad at maths. okay in her class she is, but she's still not the only one. God knows she's trying, but she's scared, so much formulas and if she gets it wrong... she just wanted to go to her room. "am sorry I will try in my exams" Olivia said. "this is second term, you only have this term and 3rd term to do well in mathematics and enter science"mother calmly said. Olivia nodded and slowly walked to her room, mum said nothing. *************** Olivia went to her room she cried though, she wanted to change. she wrote her Time table and got ready to show miss Sandra. miss Sandra started giving her free lessons for her, during breaks miss Sandra would make her do class works. at a point Olivia got tired she wanted to learn but it's becoming stressful. one Thursday miss Sandra had asked her to solve a question on simultaneous equations. she was scared at first cos miss Sandra always use a cane on her anytime she failed a classwork. she exhaled nervously before she started solving. once she was done, she gave it to miss Sandra feeling skeptical about her scores. miss Sandra looked at her work expressionless, and it frightened her. "correct" miss Sandra said giving her back her booklet. miss Sandra didn't smile, but Olivia did, she got a maths question correct. ********** exams were fast approaching and inwardly Olivia wanted to give up, nothing seemed to work. miss Sandra was teaching them construction, and Olivia found it hard to concentrate. many methods to follow, bisect this bisect that. draw this draw that all of it scared Olivia. she decided it wasn't working. "Olivia" her teacher called she looked up to see her class mates starring at her. she looked at Amarachi. "Anty asked you a question" Amarachi said. an Dead eyes were waiting for her failure and honestly she was going to give it to them except she tried. "please repeat your question" Olivia slowly said standing up. "so 180minus75 is what?" miss Sandra asked probably annoyed. Olivia's heart was racing, she wanted to try, try to calculate the answers in her head. but everyone starred at her. her best friend starred at her with hope in her eyes. the pretty and rude Emma starred at her ready to mock her. the talker ifechukwu starred as well. even the most intelligent, most handsome Peter okey starred but his eyes were intimidating as if trying to tell her something, but she wasn't getting it. "Olivia what's the answer?" miss Sandra asked with a mixture of anger and frustration. Olivia was shaking. "it's right there Olivia! it's right there at the board!" miss Sandra yelled. but we're? Olivia's eyes were wet already. she felt ashamed. the pressure too much, their eyes intimidating. she wanted to get the answer, at least for Miss Sandra. "105, Olivia it's 105!" miss Sandra yelled showing her the answer in the board. it was just facing her, Olivia just didn't see it. miss Sandra rubbed her face at looked at Peter. "Peter solve number two" and within seconds he had constructed, bisected, made an arc, solved the answer and had gotten it. yeah right, that was Peter perfect. she thought as she let her tears fall out. Olivia stayed until everyone went for break, before she bent down and started to cry. her heart beating. she wished embarrassing moments would go away. "will crying make you free?" a voice asked, she knew that voice it was Peter's. but why would a whole Peter want to talk to her? "what?" she asked. "I know you have a lot going on, and you want to try and do well in mathematics. the pressure is too much. miss Sandra, your family, and classmates. but you have to free your self from what people would think, their stereotype about you. free yourself from it, and study maths. " " why are you telling me all this? "Olivia asked cleaning her tears. " cos am tired of the way you are being mocked. and I feel God also sent me. free yourself from the fear of maths, and your stereotype of being a failure, and you will make it. if you feel it's not working tell God, build a relationship with him. God doesn't fail. "but you don't have academics problem" he smiled, a beautiful one." I do, I get scared during a test, that I might fail. I don't ask questions cos of what people would think. a whole Peter did not understand. but I had to free myself from what people think. I loved freedom. I even purposely failed a test question. but I never did it again, I love success. free yourself, God will help you. "Peter said and left. she smiled, nah she blushed. Olivia did it all, asking God to help her, studying maths and asking questions in class. she didn't care about her classmates when she fails a question. all she wanted was to know maths. and then exams approached. the hall was quiet after all it was maths exams. Olivia wrote her objectives before moving into theory and she got stuck. she knew she had studied those topics but her head felt black. she was worried. she tried to relax, but she was panicking. she became unsure of her answers, then she bent down. "oh God, help Me out you said the memory of the righteous are blessed. I've been trying right? help me out"she opened her eyes, and cleaned her tears, then she wrote even though she wasn't sure. **************** exams were over, Olivia was chatting with Amarachi when a student ran to the school garden. we're most students were. "their sharing maths paper" she said. Peter's friends more like followers brought his paperwork. a hundred he knew he got it all, even before he saw it. he looked towards Olivia's direction. he wanted to know her score. Olivia slowly opened her paperwork, eyes on her. she exhaled and opened it. "it's a lie" Emma said behind her, she wanted to know her score and mock her. but a whole Olivia the failure passed her with 5 marks. Olivia got 65 out of 100 in mathematics! Olivia hugged her friend who was so happy for her. "let me see" Peter said, already beside her. she smiled and gave the paperwork to him. he checked the paperwork and smiled. "good job miss Olivia" he said bringing forth his hand for a hand shake. she collected it though, her heart fluttered. every one was surprised, congratulating her for her success. she thanked God, miss Sandra and most especially Peter. "Olivia what did you get?" miss Sandra asked her, after she called her in the staff room. "65" she said happy. "others who got higher, do better"miss Sandra said." yes ma'am"Olivia said. miss Sandra always says that to intelligent students in her class. Olivia felt on top of the world. as she went home, she kept her usual dull face. "is that maths exam?" mother asked, she nodded." did you manage to get a two? "Luke asked. mum collected the paperwork. she was shocked, confused, surprised and happy. "did you cheat?" mum asked. Luke saw it and was shocked. he told blind Kate, who smiled. "no I didn't cheat" Olivia said. mum had hugged her."keep it up dear" Olivia nodded, before going to her room she sat on her bed removing her shoes. she was happy, she did well in mathematics a whole maths. The end. author's note hope you enjoyed the story, every one has a problem with maths and honestly it's not hard if we believe. am not saying am like Peter. but at least I try though. please I would love to hear your comments and your experience with mathematics. please follow thanks.
