Amelia

Amelia’s POV The sound of my alarm ringing pulled me out of the deep sleep I was in, I groaned as my hand tapped on my bedside drawer looking for my phone with my eyes closed so I could stop the ringing alarm. After furtively searching, I opened my eyes and grabbed the phone, pressing the stop button on the alarm screen displayed on my phone. "Hi, I'm Amelia, definitely not a morning person and the summer is here." I yawned and rubbed my face, before standing up to open my curtains. I took a deep breath in, I absolutely love the summer time and the fact that I got a summer job that pays good at Robbie’s café. Everyone in town knows that Robert has a good heart and wants to always work with him, so getting a job there is a little bit tough, but this summer I’m so happy that Emily and I were able to snag a summer job there. Emily? Emily is my best friend, she has been my best friend from freshman year in high school and now we go to the same college. The sound of my phone ringing brought me back to reality and I walked over to the phone, Emily my best friend was calling. “Hey girl”, I said immediately I picked up. “”Amy, please tell me you are almost ready for work”, Emily said in a pleading voice and I quickly brought the phone down from my ear to check what the time says. “Our shift starts in..?” I drawled in embarrassment and Emily sighed. “Robbie told us to be there by seven forty five, this is almost seven thirty Amy. I’m about to drive to your house”, Emily said and I groaned. I have a tendency of mixing up my schedules and setting the wrong time for my alarm. “I will be ready before you get here," I promised her and hung up, immediately rushing into my bathroom and jumping into the shower. I came out of the shower after five minutes. Yes, five minutes and also yes, I had a thorough bath. I’m just that good working under pressure. I had about ten minutes to work on my hair and pick out my clothes. I opened my wardrobe and blew out a breath, “it is such a mess in here”, I muttered and went ahead to flipped through the clothes that were hung. I found nothing I liked and closed the wardrobe, I will surely find the time to arrange it but not today, not now. I headed over to my drawers and pulled open the section where I keep my tops, I found a cute white crop top that had little blue stripes on it. I went back to the wardrobe to pick one of my favorite pair of blue ripped boyfriend jeans, I got dressed and wore a pair of socks. “This should do”, I sighed as I plugged in my hair straightener and tried to work magic on my very long blonde hair, I gave up after some time and just ran a brush through it and tied it up into a bun on my head. Next was my makeup, I don’t really care much about this but Emily would scream my head off if I step out with my face bland. “This is summer Amelia, the season you are supposed to look your hottest!” I imagined her screaming at me and visibly shuddered as I brought out my eyeliner and mascara. Gently, I drew a winged liner that I was proud of and applied a generous coat of mascara that made my eyelashes to look longer, not that they weren’t long but they looked longer and fuller now. The eyeliner and mascara made my eyes to pop, making my electric blue eyes to look even bolder. Quickly I brought out a lip liner and lined my lips then I applied a coat of lip gloss and smacked my lips, I applied another layer and then picked up my favorite shoulder bag. I threw in my essentials, like my wallet, phone and it’s charger, my medicated eye glasses in it’s case and my AirPods. I looked at myself in my mirror and knew I had done a great job, then I turned to leave my room. Grabbing my air force shoes as I left the room. “Good morning mom”, I greeted as I met my mom immediately I got downstairs, I kissed her cheeks and she smiled at me before frowning slightly. “Going out already?” “Mmhm”, I replied her nodding as I tried to put in my shoes. “I told you that I got the summer job at Robbie’s, remember? First day on the job," I concluded with a sigh. “Oh, now I do. Have a nice day sweetie”, my mom said to me same time I heard my best friend blasting her car horn. I rolled my eyes and my mom chuckled, I gave her a hug and air kisses and opened the front door ready to face my best friend. “Wow!” My best friend exclaimed as soon as she saw me, she had the roof of her car down. Yes, you guessed right. She drives a white Mercedes convertible, that should give her away that she is rich. Her both parents are Hollywood stars here in Malibu. Every other summer, Emily always flys out to a different country to spend the holiday but this summer she decided that she was going to stick with me, when I had mentioned that I was going to look for a summer job she jumped at the idea and said she was in to. “The way you are always late should actually be studied Amy”, she said while shaking her head as I got into the car and buckled in. “Em, enough of the banter we have work to go to”. “Oh really do we?” My best friend replied sarcastically as she pulled out of my driveway into the street and zooming off. I brought out my glasses and put them on to protect my eyes from the wind rushing, then I looked out of the car and let my mind wander. Okay, while we are still driving to my workplace let me give you a quick introduction about myself. Like I said before, my name is Amelia, I’m the second child of my parents but the first daughter. My dad died when I was in my tenth grade, it was tough on my family most especially my elder brother and he has been a bit lost ever since then. When I was in high school, all I wanted to be was a professional swimmer. Yes, I’m actually a badass at swimming but ever since the loss of my dad, things changed and I had to set some priorities. I had to be the elder sibling figure for my younger siblings, besides studying computer science at UCAL isn’t bad. It had been fun and I love it. Emily is my best friend, like I said before she has been with me ever since ninth grade in school. Her parents are cool but are always busy, leaving her to the care of her nanny. She throws sick parties every now and then but aside that, Emily is a very smart and intelligent girl, we both go to the same college. Her parents were pissed off that she did not want to follow in their footsteps to become Hollywood stars too but they got over it and I was there for my best friend all through the ride. “Not you zoning off while I am driving again”, Emily said and I came back into reality giving her a sheepish smile. “Stop smiling at me like that, you want me to talk to myself or what?” She continued and I gave her a big grin, she rolled her eyes. “Never mind, we are here already”. She said as she pulled into the parking lot of the café and restaurant. Robbie’s café and restaurant is such a beautiful place, overlooking the sea. I’ve seen how it looks like at night and it’s so breathtakingly beautiful, one of the reasons why I had picked up night shifts too aside from the extra pay. “Robbie is so going to think that we are not serious about this job”, Emily muttered as she fixed her hair. “The way you are pressed about this job, one would think you really need the money”, I teased her. She gave me an eye roll and brought out a hair brush and ran through her hair, the action made me frown at the hair. “Is that a new wig?” I asked her and she shook her head. “Nope, it for my mom. I installed it this morning, it’s cute right?” She asked with a smile and I rolled my eyes. “I thought you said you wanted to stop wearing wigs?” “I will, just not now”. She replied and we both got down from the car. In case you are confused, Emily is black. So she have a type 4c curly hair. Personally I love her hair, but that is not what we are talking about now. I pray Robbie still have the job for us. “We are so late”, Emily muttered as she pushed open the door with me following behind her and the bell overhead rang. “Emily!” Robbie exclaimed as he saw her. “I was worried that you both were running behind schedule”, he said and our mouths dropped open. Okay, I know Robbie is nice and all but not to this extent, I was expecting him to scold us for being late on our first day. “We are so sorry for being late Robbie”, Emily apologized and I seconded. He waved it off like it was no problem then he asked us to join him in the back room. We followed him and he took us into where he called the workers lounge, more like lockers room but this was different entirely There were tables and sofas in there, with a couch and a bean bag? “Just in case someone gets sick and needs to rest or if you want to use your break time catching a nap”, he explained when he saw my eyes widen at the bean bag. “So you are entitled to lockers as usual, I mean as you are supposed to in any working place”. He corrected himself and we giggled. “But you both are not working this shift”, he said finally after we had calmed down from our burst of giggles. My face fell, I had automatically thought that we were fired. “You are not fired Amelia, stop with the face." I breathe out in relief and held Emily’s hand. “Ruby is going to show you around and then you watch to get the hang of things, Amelia you can start from your next shift”. “Amy, you can call me Amy”, I said to him and he gave me a smile. “Okay kiddos, here”, he said handing us aprons with the restaurant’s logo and name on it, then name tags. “We don’t do the uniform thing here, but I’m sure you already know that”. We both nodded and he left us alone in the lounge with parting words. “Take your time then look for Ruby when you are ready, she is the brunette with a bright red colored lips”. Emily gave me a look at that description and I returned the look before we both burst into a round of laughter. I know it will be fun working with my best friend here this summer, I really can’t wait to have the best summer of my life ever. But first, find Ruby the brunette with bright red colored lips.
