Chapter Two
This is where she realizes she is f****d.
Third Person’s Point of View
There are some days that Emmi loved her job.
As much as she did not want to give her mother credit, Emmi loved being a doctor. It was tiresome to work in her field of work, but it gave her a sense of euphoria from time to time. The joy of helping people to their best shape or being there to assure them when they all lose hope kept her grounded.
Sure, there were some days in her young life when she hated to be in a spot where she currently is. It took a lot for her to stand to where she currently is, and she had sacrificed a lot of things that she could never take back.
So, she was slightly grateful that she felt at ease in her job.
A part of her was slightly thankful for her mother for forcing her to a career that she could solely enjoy on most days. A small part. Just a small one.
Emmi could hardly give her anything.
Maybe that was enough; she never knew, and hardly did she care.
But there was a good pro in having her job. She loved being with others who could help make their life better; give them more days to spend with those they had enjoyed. While learning about her job, she rarely focused on how it would help others... but how it would help them. Emmi loved how her perspective in her job was getting selfless.
She was turning as her mother wanted her to be, and she loved it.
It was the beauty of being a doctor, and she had loved every second of it.
“And then this cut will heal easier?” The child asks, frowning at her.
Emmi agreed while pulling the last tab on the cover. The little girl ended up falling from a tree all because she wanted to try what it was like to fly. Unfortunately for them, they could not fly due to them being werewolves. While being a child provides them some active imagination, it was not always wise to follow through with all the imaginations set in their mind.
They should at least be grateful that they were able to climb trees, unlike regular wolves.
“Now.” She smiled, looking at the little girl who was still sniffling her cries. “Can you please tell me that you will never repeat flying off a tree? While I know that it is exhilarating, It is also very dangerous. Your actions could have ended in more terrible things.”
A slight frown etched on her soft face. “But I wanted to fly.”
“Unfortunately, wolves could not fly. That is a skill that we could never have.” Emmi breaks out the news. Before the child could even cry, she smiled and pointed to her brother. “But when your brother grows up and finally has his wolf, you ride on his back and feel like flying in the clouds. He will become a strong wolf, so you need to wait a little longer for that. Can you do that for me?”
Her tears slowly subdued, sniffing softly. Her eyes had sprinkled in a way that Emmi knew that it would. “Really? My brother can do something like that?”
Emmi animately nodded her head, her face beamed to the young child. “When have I ever lied to you?”
“That is true. You are very nice.”
Like candy, it was enough to have the girl giggling and thanking her for her service. Usually, there would be warriors who would require her assistance, but some training doctors could help her out. For now, she needed some peace of mind that people in the pack could at least take over when she finally fled from this place.
At least, there would be less guilt.
She would always do things that would make her happy, not just put a raise in her salary.
“Please come back tomorrow so I can check on it, okay?” I muttered, leaning down to offer her a small lollipop to the little girl. “And this is for being such a brave little girl.” She had seen how the child's older brother’s eyes sparkled with the sight making her smile as she faced him. Carefully grabbing another pierce into her coat, she had offered it to the child. “And this is for being such a good big brother.”
He smiled. “Thank you, Pack doctor!”
“You’re always welcome. Please be very careful.” She replied, standing from where she was leaning as she watched the two children walk hand in hand while eating the lollipop that she had given them.
Watching family interact in a typical fashion is something that she had always sought interest in. No matter how many times she wanted to be in their position, all she could do was cherish them while they were happening before her eyes. She was sure that the only time her mother would cry or visit her in the hospital was because she would die, and no more money would come knocking on her door.
A sigh escaped her.
But thankfully, there are days she could escape from such a brute woman.
“Dr. Parker.”
She stilled, looking from behind her to see one of the nurses. The woman seemed like she was struggling to have something out of her chest, and Emmi could not help but wonder why is that. “Can I help you?” Emmi pressed the question, worried.
“Yes.” The woman all but replied. “You have your mother in the nurse station. She is looking for you.”
Her mother?
Did the hell freeze over?
...or was it her card that did?
Probably the latter.
A sigh escaped her lips to the entrance of her mother. Never had she visited the area in which she had worked, all because the woman was worried about all that was happening in her gambling life. Emmi does not have extra money to give her, and here she was already. She just gave half of her salary yesterday, and her mother was already out of money. How she could manage to spend money that was not hers made her believe that the woman is clearly evil.
Not knowing why the woman was there, she all but reached where the station was to see her dressed lavishly with the money she had given. To how someone could have the audacity to spend her hard-earned money on something that she could hardly use in years is just something else. Not a single person in the pack saw it as weird.
Rather, everyone was envious of how her mother was spoiled.
Not a single person in the pack knew how to spend things wisely. It seemed like.
“Ah, my beautiful daughter is finally here! You are always so busy, running around.” Her mother all but smiled, looking at her as if she was the most precious thing. All she could do was smile softly, and unlike the usual stuff, she would offer to her co-workers. “I have something to tell you. It is very important. Do you have a minute?”
She fights the urge to sigh, bidding everyone goodbye as they begin walking to her office. It was not like she could reject the woman, for she knew better that it was wise to talk to her in private rather than out in the open. Most patients would greet her, having her mother answer for her. It was why she hated being in a gathering with her mother.
The woman always grabs attention solely on her.
Whenever someone would compliment her, the woman who claims to be her own mother would discredit Emmi and give herself more praise—saying that without her pushing Emmi out of her v****a, her daughter would not be this beautiful. In reality, Emmi knows that most of her features came from her father alone. Nothing but the color of her hair came from hers.
That was it.
Opening her office door, she had let her mother enter first before following suit. She had locked the door, already making Emmi nervous as she had sat in her chair, looking at her mother with nothing but keen interest.
“Can I help you, mother? What did I do to deserve your grace by this time?”
While her words hold kind words, she was not pleased to have someone like her mother casually visit her workspace. It was not only cutting some of her private time, but she wanted to have some break seeing that expression on Elaine’s face.
Unaware of the hatred growing inside her daughter, Elaine simply nodded; nothing but enthusiasm was coated into her face. It had weirded her out to see the woman with a beaming light on her face. “Did you know that the Alpha had rejected his mate?”
Emmi was confused about her words. She had legitimately thought that her mother was here to ask for money, but why as she out here telling her gossip that she knew means nothing to her? A small sinking feeling erupted inside her. Even if she had no idea what was happening, she knew that this would not end well. It was terrible news for her to hear that the man rejected his mate. Emmi had been praying the creep of the Alpha who had been eyeing her would finally have someone to guard him.
She was done being ogled by such a man that is older than her father.
“Didn’t you hear me?” Elaine asked as if she would contribute something.
Emmi frowned. “I am just waiting for my cue to care, mother.”
“Emmi Parker!” She reprimanded her child with a voice that was ever so low, knowing they were in her office, and someone could hear her. “What have I told you about those manners of yours, child?”
Dejected, she all but replied. “Mother, I am just so confused about what is currently happening. Are you telling me that you had traveled from our house to here… to tell me that the Alpha had rejected his mate? You are here to gossip?”
“Oh, no! No. I would never waste such time about something so trivial.” She chuckled, swatting the air as if that would make a change. “I am here to tell you that you would marry the man, gaining you the Luna title. Isn’t that awesome, sweetheart?”
Excuse me, what?
