“You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something. Sometime in your life.” Winston Churchill.
Chapter 4
-Karen-
“Put her down,” It was Jon who got out of the haze and reacted first. I thought he was never going to say a word.
“What the heck? Put me down!” I screamed. “Let go of me.”
Nate smiled. He was holding me in bridal style. Some people were staring at us, intrigued by the sight. Nate didn’t notice them, which was surprising. He seemed different. I couldn’t put the finger on the difference but I was sure something was different. He was…playful.
“You’ve to come back with me to the other dimension.” He said, putting me down slowly.
“But why?” I asked.
He looked at Jon then back at me.
“I need to talk to you alone.” He stressed the word ‘alone’.
“You can say anything in front of Jon.” I narrowed my eyes. “He is trustable.”
“You can’t take her back with you to that freaking dimension ever again.” Jon stepped ahead, shielding me. “Get your ass out of here. Go back to your—”
I didn’t even see Nate move but he was clutching at Jon’s collar in a second. Vampires were fast, I need not tell you. He looked straight in his eyes. His fangs hadn’t come out but I knew they were on their way to come out. Something had drastically changed about him.
“You’re alive only because she wants you to live.” He growled. “It wouldn’t take me a minute to execute you right here.”
“Don’t make a scene here.” I tried removing his stone hands away from Jon’s collar. “You can come to my house from the window.”
Nate raised his eyebrow. I exhaled.
“It is the only way to get you in without getting noticed by my parents at home.” I dragged Jon back with me. He didn’t protest. “What’s the matter by the way? Victor was here to warn me too.”
Jon’s head snapped in my direction.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.” I apologized. “I’ll tell you everything tomorrow.”
“You better tell me.” He said. “And I’m not leaving you alone with this filthy demon.”
“Have you forgotten how I can drink blood in the blink of an eye?” Nate asked him. His deadly stare told me that he was surely going to do that with Jon. “You don’t stand a chance against me.”
“Don’t make me bring a stake to drive it through your heart.” Jon snarled.
“Guys, don’t make me crazy with your macho words against each other.” I was irritated. “It will be nice if Nate tells me everything in person.”
Jon and Nate didn’t exchange any more words. We walked home. Jon left me when we reached my house. He was very reluctant while doing so. He told me to take care of infinite times. I had to push him away. I got inside my house after showing Nate how he could get into my room.
I answered mom’s everyday questions and asked her some questions about her day. She had to go shopping with some of her friends. I couldn’t have asked for more. If I had known she was already going I didn’t have to ask Nate to come through the window.
“Diana and I are going to the city mall for weekly shopping.” She said as she kissed my forehead. “Make sure to close the door. And don’t open it until I come back or of course if your dad does.”
“Don’t worry mom,” I said.
I watched her get out of the house. I closed the door and hurried to my room. I turned on the light immediately. I didn’t want to go for the light slowly as I had done while Victor was in my room.
I found Nate sitting on my bed. He was looking around.
“Everything is different in this dimension.” He commented.
“Why did Victor come to warn me?” I asked coming to the point. “Why do I need to come back?”
“I’m going to kill him.” I shivered at his voice. “I had told him not to show his face to you. It was the only thing he had promised on before coming to keep an eye on you.”
He had promised not to show his face to me? Now it solved the mystery of the turned-off light and the not-showing-face attitude. He couldn’t show his face to me so he had found a way to talk to me in the darkness. He was the notorious brother. I burst out laughing.
“What happened?” Nate asked. “Why are you laughing?”
“He didn’t show his face to me exactly.” I was still laughing.
“You said he came to warn you.” He said confused. “How is it possible not to show his face?”
“He didn’t let me turn on the lights.” I leaned on the wall. “Now get to the matter. Tell me what the Calling is.”
Nate shifted a little on the bed. He raked a hand through his dark hair and licked his lips. He looked nervous. What was he hiding?
“You need to know what happened when you returned here.” He said.
“I never thought I would ever see you again,” I admitted. I was happy as well as scared. I wanted to see him but when he suddenly appeared I got scared. “What’s going on?”
“The Calling is when supernatural species call for a gathering to talk on a matter or make a significant decision. According to the information given to us by someone, the werewolves are calling a gathering. It clearly indicates that they are preparing for an attack.” He described. I listened to him dumbstruck. “The werewolves have gathered in huge groups and are finalizing the attack with hunters. If the Calling goes well, the hunters and werewolves will unite to destroy the vampire clans.”
“Hunters are involved?” I was freaking confused. “Weren’t hunters supposed to hunt for werewolves too?”
“They have made a pact or something. The hunters are on their side to murder the vampires.” Nate said in an angered voice. “They have even started hunting vampires in the major cities. Their foremost plan is to capture witches and finish them too.”
I couldn’t say anything. If the hunters and werewolves were working together, they could get more powerful than vampires. They were k********g and finishing witches, which meant I was in deep trouble.
“What will the werewolves get if they kill all the vampires?” I asked. “How can they be so sure that the hunters will be all friendly to them after they finish the vampires?”
“I don’t know. They are selfish and stupid.” Nate spoke loudly. “We have to know what happens at the Calling.”
“You just said that they’ve started killing vampires in the major cities. How is it possible without The Calling?” I walked towards him. His body was stiff like he had stopped breathing. My own breath was hitched. “Are you sure the Calling hasn’t been made yet?”
“We aren’t sure of anything.” He replied. “But Victor thinks if the Calling had happened the process of killing would have been accelerated to the level that we could understand the war has started. He thinks that major cities are centered as a trial to see if the collaboration works out for the past foes.”
The war has started.
Victor was trying to warn me about this war. Now everything was clear to me. The werewolves and hunters had come together to end the vampire regime in the other dimension. They needed to finish the vampires roaming in the outer world before getting to finish the vampires in the other dimension.
The killings of the major city vampires were just the trial for the alliance. If it was going to prove alright to them, then the enemies were going to become friends. Enemy of an enemy was a friend.
“Who killed Adam?” I suddenly asked, surprising him.
“Who is Adam?” He asked back.
“There is—was a kid in our school who was killed. And by the look of his dead body, I’m sure it was a vampire.” I said. “Why would a vampire kill a human while the danger of being spotted is there?”
“A kid got killed?” He furrowed his eyebrows. “I can’t believe that he was killed by a vampire.”
“You mean someone else killed him?”
“I don’t know.” He shook his head. “I’ve to ask Victor about this. He is the only one who keeps contacts with all the vampires in this world.”
“What do you need me for?” I asked. If he had come for me, he had something to do with me.
“The witches are trying to create a magical layer for the dimension to protect it from the entry of werewolves or hunters. The layer will not allow werewolves to enter the dimension. But the hunters who are human or half-vampires will be able to get into the dimension.” He explained looking at me. “We can kill the hunters easily. But if the combination attacks on us, we’ll lose the war.”
That explained everything. I understood him. He needed me to help the witches to create the special walls. I had to help him.
“Do you think this will stop the werewolves from attacking the vampires living in this world?” I asked. What would happen to the vampires who were here? “Won’t they kill them all?”
“Victor is grouping up the vampires from all around the world,” Nate answered quickly. “He is here to regroup the vampires and send them through the portal into the protection of the layer. This way the vampires will be safe.”
“How many vampires has he saved?”
“He has sent most of the vampires through the portal. Some of them are still remaining. He is recruiting them as fast as he can.”
Suddenly my room lit in green light. The atmosphere became chilly and I shivered. I put my arms around me and took a long breath. Nate didn’t look scared but he was angry. An oval-shaped swirl door appeared on the wall where my computer was. I nearly shrieked as a tall figure stepped out of the portal.
He had a smirk on his pale face. He was wearing a new black leather jacket over black jeans. He was tall as he always was but the small room made him look taller. His grey eyes twinkled in the green light. He knew he was hot and that irritated me the most.
“Lovebirds, you’re wasting your time here and I’m doing all the tedious work.” He said as the portal disappeared. “I’m recruiting bloodthirsty monsters out there and you’re talking about your undying love.”
“You promised me that you won’t talk to her before I come.” Nate got up from the bed. “How could you break it?”
“I promised you that I won’t show her my face. Ask her, I didn’t.” He grinned at me. “I just told her to be careful of the people around her. Anyone can turn out to be an enemy. Did you explain what the Calling is to her? She was dying to know about it.”
“I told her everything.” Nate pressed his lips in a thin line. “She had a lot of questions.”
“So, you’re getting all the vampires around the world to security.” I faked a smile at Victor. “You’re a good babysitter.”
“Sweetheart, I know you missed me.” He tilted his head sideways. “Let’s just spare the love talk for some hours. I have important work to do before getting you both to the other dimension.”
“What important work?” I asked. I didn’t quite like the tone of his voice.
“I’m tired of doing the work alone. I need you both to accompany me to go to a vampire and convince him to leave this dimension.”
“What’s the problem in convincing him?” Nate asked bored. “Just tell him that the end of vampires is near.”
“You, my brother have a very wicked sense of humor.” Victor smiled. His fangs were on full show. But that didn’t scare me. “The person we need to convince is specialized in making weapons that kill both vampires and werewolves.”
“I thought he was a vampire,” Nate said. “Why would he do that?”
“It’s his job and he takes his job too seriously. We need to convince him that the hunters he was dealing with for years are going to turn against him to kill him soon.” Victor made a face while speaking. “Are you in, Karen?”
We needed to convince a vampire to come with us to the other dimension to save him.
“I don’t understand. Why do you desperately need to save him?” I asked. “Why can’t you leave him alone if he doesn’t wanna be saved?”
“He was one of the vampire elders. He was there when his father fought the battle against werewolves years ago.” Victor’s fangs flashed as he spoke. “He knows what to do during an emergency situation. He doesn’t believe that after father, we two—brothers are capable of ruling the vampire race that’s why it will be a little difficult to persuade him.”
“Nate is capable,” I said. “I don’t know about you.”
“Nice try to c***k,” Victor said. “Nate, are you coming?”
“Of course, I am.” Nate smiled at me. He liked what I had said. “Karen?”
“I’m in this crap too.” I smiled back.
