The Office

~Malik~ My alarm goes off, but I’ve been up for a while now. I don’t sleep much these days, though I’m not really sure why that is. Let me stop…..I know why I’m not sleeping, but I don’t know what to do about it. I slip out of bed, not wanting to wake her. It’s a full two hours before I usually get up. I need the extra time, but she doesn’t need to know that. I jump in the shower, making quick work of getting myself clean. I brought clothes in with me, trying to keep my disruption to a minimum. I really don’t want to alert her to me being up, so silence is the key. I click off the light and open the door slowly. I don’t hear any sounds other than her breathing. I quietly walk to my side of the bed, my socked feet rubbing against the carpet. I grab my watch, phone, and my wallet from the nightstand. I place the items into my pockets and reach the door. I place my hand on the knob and turn it as quietly as I can. I pull the door open and take a step outside. “You’re up early. Where are you going?” Sh.it! I was so close to getting out while she was asleep. “Everything’s okay, my love. I just have an early meeting at work. I will see you this evening.” I hold my breath, expecting more questions or an argument. I actually don’t know what to expect, but I wait anyway. “Okay. Have a great day; I love you.” My chest constricts, and my mouth goes dry. My hand tightens on the doorknob, and I quickly let it go. “Have a good day.” I quietly close the door back and walk down the hall. When I get to the living room, I suck in a big breath, feeling like I was suffocating before. It’s all too much to bear right now. I know what I’m doing is wrong, but I don’t know what else to do. I put on my shoes and grab my jacket, walking out the front door. ~Lyric~ I bounce down the stairs, excitement all around me. I finally get to make my presence known at the office today and I’m ecstatic. I’ve been wanting to get into the family business for a while now, but Daddy always said that it wasn’t time yet. After a lot of begging and pleading, he finally agreed. I’m 21 years old, the oldest of 3, and the future Alpha of the Black Moss pack. I will take over within the year; I wanted to finish school first. Daddy’s letting me step into the business first, and then I can take over the pack. My fated mate is the only thing I’m missing, but something tells me I will have him soon enough. I pass my future Beta on the stairs and give him a huge smile. “Good morning, Kinta. How are you this fine morning?” He looks at me contemptuously, but his mood can’t sour mine. “Uh, hello….” “Whatever,” he grunts and brushes past me on the stairs. I sigh and shake my head—such a grouchy person. I continue down until I make it to the dining room. My father is already sitting at the table with my mother next to him. I walk in and kiss my father on his cheek. “Morning, Daddy.” I sit next to him and get comfortable in the chair. “Mother.” She looks at me and nods, no emotion on her face. My father, on the other hand, is all smiles. He grabs my hand and strokes the back. “Are you ready for today, princess?” I smile sweetly at my dad, not missing my mom rolling her eyes. “I’m so excited, daddy. I’ve wanted this for so long.” “I don’t see why you’re doing this. This isn’t the best ide-” “SILENCE!” I try to contain my smirk, and my mom sighs. She stands up and leaves the dining room. “Forget about her, princess. Don’t let her bring you down.” “It’s already forgotten. I’m too excited for today.” “Well let’s get the day started, shall we?” ↭↭↭↭↭↭↭↭↭↭↭↭↭↭↭ The SUV pulls up to the front of the tall building, and I can barely sit in my seat. I’ve been antsy the entire ride, and it’s been making Daddy laugh at me. I can’t remember the last time I was so excited for something. The door is opened, and a hand extends for me. I grab it and am helped out of the car. Daddy follows after me and holds out his elbow so we can walk in together. The doors open for us and we head to the elevators. All heads turn to us, and we walk to the elevators, making me feel like actual royalty. I go to push the elevator button, but Daddy pulls me back. “We don’t take these.” We walk down a bit, and there is a solitary elevator door. Daddy swipes a card in front of it, and the doors open. We step inside, and Daddy swipes the card again. He doesn’t even have to press any buttons. “Your card should be ready before we leave today.” I look up at my father, and my heart flutters. I’m bouncing on my toes, eager to get inside. The elevator dings, and the doors open. I step off the elevator, and all of the chatter immediately stops. “Good morning, Mr. Evans. Would you like some coffee?” Daddy looks at me with a sparkle in his eyes. “Princess?” “I would like a double espresso.” The woman looks between my father and me before nodding and moving off. We continue to walk down a row of cubicles until we get to the other side of the room. A big oak door has my father’s name on it. He opens the door and motions me inside. To say his office is luxurious is an understatement. The walls are navy blue, with built-in shelving all around the room. He has binders, books, and other keepsakes on the shelves. A big wooden desk in the center of the room has a big leather chair behind it. I can only hope my office will be as luxurious, just different colors. I need something much lighter. “Have a seat, princess. We are still getting your room together.” “Do you mind if I walk the floor first? I just want to get a feel for everything.” “Of course love, hurry back.” I nod and walk out of his office. I start to walk the floor slowly while taking in everything. I hear the ding of the elevators and the clacking of computer keys. This is it….I’m really here. I continue my walk, and the most magnificent scent hits my nostrils. It’s a combination of musk and pine. I look toward the elevators to find brown eyes burning a hole through me. MATE! There’s a pounding in my chest and fluttering in my stomach. I swallow thickly, trying to contain my lust and desire. This office houses both werewolves and humans. The last thing I need is to make a spectacle of myself by claiming my mate in front of everyone. A throat clears behind me, and I quickly turn around. The woman from earlier is standing there with a cup in her hands. She offers it to me, and I take it with a nod. She looks past me, and a smile graces her face. I see lust swirling in her eyes, and anger starts to simmer. “Ah, Malik Grant. He is a very good-looking man, isn’t he?” I have to swallow the growl that’s begging to be released. “It’s too bad that he’s married.” I watch her walk away before turning back to the elevators. No one is there anymore, but his scent is still in the air. Married…my fated mate is married? Wolves don’t really get married. I mean, some do, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but there’s no need for it. Wolves mark each other, and that means more than some ring and a ceremony. Marking your mate, fated or chosen, tells the world they are yours forever. It tells anyone looking that you’ve made a commitment that only death can break. If my mate is married, that means that my mate is human…..
