CHAPTER 12: THE BELOVED MATE
She didn’t know what happened. She didn’t know what had gotten into her.
Her eyes blurry, but she can still make out the way she haven’t had any idea where it might have been leading to. When she meet his gaze, Devon was lost, helplessly crying as his stare touches her soul. But she was confuse and in pain for what Helga had said.
What was her right to demand for things, when she was just a mere rogue?
The thought unnerved her. It greatly pained Devon, same as the ache she couldn’t forget before.
The young her who was looking for the love she seek, but nobody had given her until she meet him. The man so deceitful that he is able to soothe the soul he later on shattered into pieces.
It took place when she is of age, the same date where the rumours began circulating. Daughter of the traitors who sold their pack in return of their own honour.
It was the same day. The sky are grey, the clouds are dark indicating of an upcoming rain. There are roars from afar, thunders and lightning clashing behind those array, and pile. Luna stared at them. She looks somewhat expectant. She was waiting for the rain, which she really preferred the most.
If it rains, that means she wouldn’t need to attend the training to the pack house. This lead for her not run across the werewolves of the same age as hers, who often tease her—no, they hurt her.
But before she could wish for the pouring rain, she smell their presence already before she heard them.
“Look who’s here.” Bella sneered.
Luna’s heartbeat thumped loudly inside her chest. She gulps. Her hold tightened towards the same spear they are holding. She do not want to turn around. To see their face, the mockery that was far itched on them would only make it worst. The hate she hold dearly, the grudge she keep embedded in her chest that she was so afraid she might not be able to keep it, if not, it would only worsen the state they are. The thread her family are already put into a predicament on.
She couldn’t ask them either way. Whenever she does, her attempts would failed, the weary eyes, and the tired lines on her Father and her mother orbs would left her tongue tied. Their hands are full, and she wouldn’t want to add up to the worries that keep them bottled and so Luna endured the words and bear the pain that their very own pack had brought her.
“Hey, look at me, wolf.” Bella snarled loudly.
The other wolf who belongs on her group laughs.
Her shoulder tense.
“I said look at me. NOW!” Bella hollered.
And how can a mere daughter of a warrior go against the Alpha’s own child? Oppressed, Luna was force into submission. Her body move and she found herself lowering her head as she exposed her neck to show that she offered her life to whatever she may have intended to do with her. She clenched her jaw, but her lips remain sealed shut.
“Just like what I expected.” The way she said, Bella knew the power she hold. The blood that was running on her vein, an Alpha who should lead, but Luna knew better.
She isn’t somebody who should be the ruler of the pack. She is cruel, vile, she do not deserve the position. She do not deserve them.
“I’m sorry.” Even though, she didn’t do anything wrong, Luna uttered those words.
She despise the fact that she couldn’t do anything to even at least defend herself. It was the world against her. It was the pack against a wolf same as her. What chances she hold? What power she had to go against those who look down at her? Who laugh at her torments? Nothing. Left with no option, Luna was meek. All she can do was to bear and endure.
“Just like what I expected.” Bella chuckled. She circled her, while those wolves only stand. “Apologize, well, your family should have because you are traitors from our pack! You should have been banish by my father!”
Luna was tense.
If Bella do something today, nobody would be able to aid Luna. The head warrior had just gotten summon for the matters that concern their pack. They do not have anybody there, except for them.
“Do you know that I am almost tempted to ask my father for their head?” She could almost taste the satisfaction on her words. As if whatever she would ask the Alpha would be Inn favour, fervour towards his only child, in spite of how cruel it may have become.
That was the last thread the keep her wolf at bay, who keeps growling, baring its teeth to strangled Bella right there and then.
“My parents is not a traitor.” She clenched her jaw.
Luna lifted her head slowly and meet her eyes.
“Oh, really?” Bella mocked her. “Well, perhaps I should believe you, since you looked... How do you call it?” She hums before she level her face to her. “Innocent? Innocent my ass!”
Right before she knew, Luna felt her legs creeping forcefully to her sides, an impact as she bring a round kick towards her small body. It knock the air out of her lungs. She was fast. Her agility is more stronger and faster than her. A hot white pain clasped ahold to where her kick land. It feels like she may have broken some bones that made Luna gasp.
“Innocent?!” Bella roared.
She was not expecting her attack! With the force she gathered, Bella manage to sent Luna flying across the sodden fence around the clearing.
“Luna!” There are series of gasp.
The one who shouted, concerned was Zavi, the only friend she could rely on, but even she is afraid. She couldn’t step out. It pained her to see her getting beaten up, and all she can do was to only watched her on that state.
Luna groans. The pain felt like it could almost tore her core. She hold her sides, and bit lips, tasting the metallic blood that cascades on the side of it.
Luna wiped them, but she did not complain.
Bella walked closer to where she was. She had a smirked on her face, and so Luna although she wanted to resist, gulps down her wait and shut down her orbs.
She was waiting for the pain, but it did not came.
And so heard a voice she least expect to.
“Bella!” It was Trevor, the beta’s son.
Luna opened her eyes. She saw him marching, his heavy footsteps that made Bella cowered he is the only whom she feared, and everybody knew why, they may not have been mates, but Bella express how much she adore Trevor.
“T—Trevor!” She looks stunned. “W—what are you doing here?”
The fierceness she had vanished. It was if his sudden appearance had soothed the angry wolf that Bella showed everybody earlier.
“I heard about the clamour.” He glared at her.
His eyes landed to Luna who has been eyeing the pair. Perhaps, it was because this is the first time she had seen the Beta’s son this close.
He have the same features same as with his father. The beta blood that matches his stance, and the aura he carries that made every wolf submit even at such young age. He has been trained, mould to be a warrior as he hold the future of their pack.
He bring back his eyes to Bella.
“Are you trying to harm Luna again?” He sneered.
Luna was surprised to see the anger she could perceive on his irises.
“W—what? No!” Bella stammered.
“Then why is she bleeding?” He raised his eyebrows at her.
“Perhaps, because she is clumsy?” Bella reasoned out.
But Trevor isn’t buying it on her. ‘stead of, he walked to where she was and offered his hands.
She can feel Bella’s gaze digging holes at her, but Luna pay no heed.
It was the first she saw Trevor, and it was the first time she saw the genuine look of kindness from somebody who belongs on their pack. The connection they had weave turns deeper, Trevor became the light, the saviour who rescued his damsel, Luna. He was more than the Knight he asked for, but not everything prolongs.
On her 18, Luna decided to professed the feeling she could name of.
“I like you.” She muster her courage.
Nervous, she felt her hands, her palms getting clammy. Her heart was beating fast inside her ribcage. She couldn’t think straight, but hopeful. She couldn’t suppress the wistful thoughts of what would may be his response.
She was smiling, but the moment she lifted her head, the upturned smile vanish.
He was looking at her rather...icily.
Fear gripped Luna’s chest.
“Trev....?” She calls.
“You can’t be serious, can you?” He looks pissed.
She didn’t know what happened.
“W—what?” Luna gulps.
“You can’t like me, Luna. We are not mates.” He harshly said.
“I know, but—”
“And I can’t love somebody, who have the same blood as yours.”
And that was the last straw that tear her apart. To the man whom she was expecting to accept her, to never judge her when everybody does. She set her standards high, and now she can feel her trust breaking into pieces. She hope, mourning for the main that was more than being rejected.
What pain her the most was after that night, she heard that Trevor, the future beta and the future Alpha of the pact, Bella, is to be wed when they are of age, regardless of the fated bond—the mate that would end up being rejected if that happens.
Devon shook off her head as those memories plunged her on depth.
Right before she realized she had gotten that far.
“W—why...?” She gnaw her lips.
She looked behind her, but she didn’t see anybody.
A bittersweet smile slipped past across her face. Why is she expecting again...? She was expecting, looking forward that she often let her guard down. When she saw Tarik earlier, her emotions brew until she found herself running away from him. She was drifting apart, and he didn’t do anything to...soothe the anguish she felt, the doubts and questions that brimmed during those days where he fills none.
Devon cried. Did she run because she wanted to protect her own heart from the pain he would bring?
Helga was right. She barely knew him and vice versa. He helped her because they are mates, but what would happened when they are not fated? She knew...she knew he’ll kill her just like all the wolves who despise their being.
Her wolf whimper. They shared the same pain.
All she wanted was to be happy, is it really too much to ask for it?
On the other hand as Devon bawled her eyes out, Zachary felt a sudden pain surging and creeping to his chest. It wasn’t physical. He could feel it, he could taste it, but he couldn’t comprehend where does it was coming from.
He was on his way to meet the warriors, when a scent caught his attention. It was coming from the boarders. The Devonshire Kingdom, whom he never ventured lately. It was strong. It was intoxicating that he felt himself moving onwards, although a rule of decree has been passed over, a vampire isn’t a allowed unless permitted by the rulers of the Kingdom himself. The current King and Queen of Devonshire monarch.
He is aware of the law, but something about that scent keeps probing, taking away his logic until he found himself totally submerge, his chest was beating loudly as the air whipped across his face, but he do not care at all.
His eyes were train ahead. He was moving fast until Zachary reach the place where the scent is much stronger.
There he found a woman, who’s back turned against him.
It was coming from her!
It smell of something sweet combined with spice he couldn’t name of. It feel ethereal, and he was entrapped. Soon enough before Zachary realized what has gotten into him.
His eyes widened on its own accords.
‘MINE’ It was the claim he never knew he would be able to utter for so many years.
The woman, and the scent, it was no other than the beloved mate he’s been seeking for all his life!
How ironic that he was asking Helena about her, but now fate make his way to finally meet the one whom he waited for ages. And Zachary had never felt happy, nor he felt his chest beats so loudly.
His mate. It was his mate. He thought as if even he couldn’t believe it.
