Chapter ThreeThe Duke at dinner had placed the Countess on his left and the Marchioness of Trumpington on his right. As he wanted to watch Lorena, he had seated her as the next lady beyond the Countess so that he could both see and hear her. He had been rather surprised at her appearance, because despite her youth she looked distinctive. Although he noticed the simplicity of her inexpensive dress, like her uncle he realised that it had an individuality that made it completely and absolutely right for her. He imagined that somebody must have helped her choose it. Doubtless in Rome there were dressmakers who had a true artistic sense, not like those in London who followed the fashion blindly without taking into consideration the different appearances of their clients.
