Chapter SixThe Duke was fast asleep when he was aroused by the growling of his dog, Rufus, who always slept with him. It was unusual for Rufus to wake him during the night and, as the Duke opened his eyes, he thought that it must be morning. Then he saw that the room was completely dark except that he had pulled back the curtains before he went to bed because it was so hot and he could then see the stars in the sky. Rufus growled again and the Duke wondered what could be upsetting him. Then the dog went to the door and sniffed.
