CHAPTER FOURSir Alexander went into his study. Vanda walked over to the stables to speak to the grooms before they left for Gresbury. She knew that they would take the horses slowly and she calculated that if they left at about one thirty, they would be there soon after five o’clock. They would go cross-country as the journey took much longer by road as there were so many narrow twisting lanes. The horses were ready, looking well-groomed and, she thought, outstanding enough to please the most fastidious horse-lover. She remembered how well the Earl had ridden as a boy.
