CHAPTER THREEVanda stared at Mr. Rushman in some surprise before she exclaimed, “The Earl is coming home? When?” Mr. Rushman glanced down at a letter beside him. “His Lordship says,” he replied, “that he will be leaving London on Wednesday, which is actually today. That means he should be here on Friday.” Vanda made a little murmur before he went on, “His Lordship asks that I send a pair of the best horses to The Dog and Duck at Gresbury.” He looked at Vanda and added, “You do know, Miss Vanda, as well as I do that we have nothing in the stable that his Lordship would consider worth driving.” Vanda knew that this was true.
