Intro.
"Vikings?! Are you kidding me? " Freya was laughing "You should not be laughing, Freya." Her father scolded her. "They are one of the world's oldest packs! This is the very first time they attend The Silver Moon gathering. We will be welcoming them like royals. All eyes will be on them; the Norwegian packs with their Alpha and Luna are more like a myth than actual people. We have all heard about them, how they are blessed by the Norse Gods, how fierce they are, but outside their countries’ borders, I can’t think of anyone that actually met them. I haven’t even heard of someone that has. So, everybody will be watching them. Respect, curiosity, and fear will follow them.” Her father raised his chin; he was a proud warrior, which was his way to emphasize how important this was for him that it should be for me too! "Well, Vikings... mythical...It sounds so old-fashioned, like a story parents would tell their children at night for them to behave. We lived in the 20th century, you know. Suppose it was that important to see one of them, Alpha, Luna, omegas, or whatever. We could just have skyped them, you know." Freya mumbled and rolled her eyes; she knew very well to respect Alphas, Lunas, her elders, and so on, but come on. But she could not help but to think; Nobody really deserves respect just because they never travel anywhere. Respect the people that don’t dare to leave the safety of their homes? That’s just ridiculous. The Silver Moon gathering was the only time werewolf packs worldwide would get together in one place. Every second year, it was meant to be a celebration of the moon Goddess wedding day and to bless true love. Bless newly mated couples and destined mates that just found each other. Still, it's more like an opportunity for the Alphas to show off their land, power, packs and for the rest of the werewolf to search for their destined mates. Make new alliances and strengthen old ones. It had become an event for making business partners, good deals, and bedmates. Well, that may be a little harsh, but it’s kind of true. Freya was the daughter of The White Moon packs head warrior. Tall, muscular, but with a slim figure. With her deep blue eyes, long dirty blond hair, sun-kissed skin, and full pink lips, many had made the mistake of thinking she was a typical girly girl. Boys thought they could woo her with creepy gestures and dirty talk. Some even made the mistake of thinking they could just grab her. Once, they only did that once! Girls tried to walk all over her, pick on her. You know, the usual high school-girl-hierarchy system. This didn’t bite on Freya, she's been trained since a young age, and she was confident in her own worth. A make-up barbie or horny ken-doll could not change the way she saw herself or her values. There was no problem giving some troublesome boys a black eye or two for her. She just ignored insecure girls’ slander, gossip, and petty bullying attempts; she never stooped to their level. However, that didn’t mean she had accepted being treated like a doormat. Or would stand by watching somebody else be bullied just for the show of it. If it was way out of line, no more a friendly battering, Freya didn’t think twice to challenge them publicly. Call them out on their actions, challenge them and fight without mercy until they submit. This she repeated, again and again, she had never lost. It worked. She was left alone, admired, liked, respected, and hated from a distance, and she was okay with that. She may be a little hot-tempered but fast, strong, and one of the pack's best warriors and strategists. She loved combat training; she watched her dad train the warriors from she was a little girl. Copied them, studied them, and finally, her dad gave in and taught her with the rest. Long before her 16thbirthday, when the rest started their mandatory training. By the time the rest of her peers began their training, she had made a name for herself. She may look innocent and girly, but there was no one in the pack that by now didn’t know in the fighting arena. She showed no mercy. Never hesitate! That may cost you your or your comrades their life. It was printed in, and she lived by it. She had just one problem; she couldn't shift into her wolf form. Don't get me wrong, her wolf is there, always sassing back at her, judging her every move and very much present, but she can't or won't change shift, and Ragna doesn't feel the need to tell her why. Ragna, that's her wolf, a cheeky, smart mouth creature who's been occupying her head every day since her 16th birthday. Day and night, being her best friend and a pain in the ass when it suits her. They bickered like an old married couple, and the other minute they blocked each other out or gossiped and consoled one another. Freya could not picture a life without Ragna, but she wished she at least could tell her why they could not change form. " Hmpf.. Skype! Old fashion or not, they are to be respected, Freya! The Viking Alpha is the only Alpha in their country. He rules them all and is considered royalty by other alphas and packs. His used to be treated as such, and they are all known to be ruthless, cold-hearted, and merciless. There is no need to pick the tiger on its nose just for fun; you know it would hurt you in the end!" "Yeah, well, it's not like I'm going to engage in a fistfight with their Alpha or challenge their Luna just to have something to do, you know." "Of course, you're not! And you will be careful and respectful around them, knowing your temper and pride, avoid the Alpha and Luna, would you? Just... Just don't get in any trouble and don't embarrass me... okay? Do as you promise your mother, lay low this week, swallow some camels if you have to." He was nervous, and she knew that, so for once, she kept her mouth shut and just nodded. She loved her father, but he had an unhealthy respect for great warriors, elders, authority and was very easily impressed by rumors from his comrades and fighting buddies. Freya and her dad were packing for their journey the next day. The White Moon pack is not the biggest in the world, but not the smallest either. They would be about 45 unmated wolves attending from their pack this year. The Alpha, with his Luna and some of his best warriors, would participate with the unmated wolves. Of course, it's essential to show some muscles when meeting other Alphas. Among them, Freya's two best friends were going too, Johanna and Oliver. Johanna was a tall, dark beauty, hazel brown eyes, long chocolate dark hair, always with a rosy blush with freckles across her nose and cheeks. Positive all the time, and it's impossible to be in a bad mood around her. Her personality would shine like the sun, even if she were engulfed by night. Oliver and Freya grew up as neighbors and were old classmates, growing up together, playing together, and helping shape each other like young adults. They got in trouble together and helped each other out of it after, laughing of course.. what else are good friends for? They always joked about being each other's chosen mate if they couldn't find their destined ones, and Johanna would scold them about it because that kind of talk would get us in trouble and because she did not want to be "our mistress" if she didn't find her mate. Freya sighed. Like the rest of their peers, Oliver and Johanna would be going without their parents. Because Freya's dad was the head warrior he would be going to, did I mention he was very overprotective towards his only daughter? Expecting greatness of her, strength, and self-control, but of course, without letting his little princess go. Well, luckily, her three older Brothers had already found their mates and would not be going. If they were, she would probably be shielded between them all the time until they all got home again. "Hi, Freya, are you late too?" Oliver came sprinting over. "Huh? What are you talking about, Oliver? No school or work today, remember?" she gave him a crooked grin. "Uhm... No... But seriously, girl! Everybody or every unmated wolf has a meeting now in about 5minutes about the trip and stuff... Did you forget?" "Oh, fudge. Yeah, I did." Both Freya and Oliver arrived just in time, sprinting down the doors huffing and puffing. "You both forgot it, didn't you." Johanna was already there smirking at them; she was always on time and had control of everything! The meeting was long, too long, over 3 hours! And so much dry information Freya was wondering if there is possible to die of boredom, if so. This would be her moment. Maps of the camp, where their camp would be, the significant Alpha and Luna house, ceremony area, mealtimes... Bla Bla Bla... The only exciting thing was the bonfire camp, the one place all packs could gather all week besides dinner, a place where we could party, socialize, make new friends and go for a swim. The bonfire camp was located on a big beach! Exotic island, sun, and a beach! Could it be better than that? Freya has always loved the sun. She finds something calming about closing her eyes and letting the sun engulf her body and mind. When the warm sun rays meet her skin, she feels the warmth spreading out to all her limbs. It was just soothing and pleasant! Johanna and Freya were squealing at each other, jumping up and down. We are going to the beach! Oliver just rolled his eyes at them, but they knew he was as excited as them his just too "cool" to show it. They knew very well he was already planning his wardrobe, beachwear, his matching sandals; they knew him too well to buy his calm act. Maybe a beach doesn't sound so interesting, but when you live in the middle of a large dense forest your whole life, the beach sounds like heaven! The closest thing they ever came to going on the beach was the muddy grass ground leading into the water in a pond just a couple of minutes away from the packhouse. A popular place for kids and teens on warm days, but not the same as a beach by the ocean. "We need to pack some bikinis, sun lotion, some big beach towels, and a volleyball and and…." Johanna was already on her way home, still talking to herself. Freya just looked after her and laughed, turning around and walking home. Oliver, deep in thoughts beside her. It would be weird and nice to change the scenery for a little while, meet new people, and I know both Johanna and Oliver are praying to the Goddess that they meet their mates there. Freya is not rushing to find her mate. She feels like she's too young, has a lot of time, and needs more time to find her way in life. To grow, mature, have some fun. She wanted to study, find work, and she would not, for the love of the Goddess, give up her training or her dreams for a guy. Only the thought of becoming a housewife and baby machine made her sick to her stomach. Family and love, fine. Nothing wrong with that. But the guy who imagined she would become his little, quiet trophy wife at home had an unpleasant surprise waiting for him. No mate bond would ever change that! After packing some "beach stuff," and yes, Johanna sent her a message with a list, she did her skin routine, brushed her teeth, and facepalmed right in bed. She didn't even remember closing her eyes before she fell asleep. Darkness was all she felt, no dreams. No nightmare. Just a pair of blue eyes. And a midnight black wolf with blue light pulsating out of his fur.
