Chapter SixteenEncroaching walls pressing in, black, formless, the sharp tang of sweat and rawhide invading nostrils; everything confused, warped, a world of despair. Melody rolled over, groaning, her eyes growing accustomed to the dimly lit interior. Forcing herself up, pushing down with her palms on the hard, damp earth, blinking, the only sound the pounding of her heart in her ears. She opened her mouth, sucking in a breath, and had to stop herself from screaming. She wore buckskin clothes, rough against her skin, an unforgiving material, cold to the touch. On her feet, moccasins, around her throat a necklace of bone, possibly horn. She thought of tugging it free but then, as the memory of Nathan and the manner of his death returned, she leaned over and vomited into the dirt, retching
