Danielle looked in the door's direction. She found both Aiden and his friend from before looking straight back at her, accompanied by another man that she had yet to meet.
The huntress imagined that question had come from the stranger. And by his posture and demanding tone in his voice she could only assume he was the alpha of that pack.
Danielle pondered for a few instants if she should give them all a piece of her mind about being taken to that place without her consent, but decided against it. Those guys, Aiden and his friend, would face the consequences of their actions soon enough.
She was sure the quickest way of being allowed to leave that place would be by quietly listening to what they had to say without creating any commotion. That and she was in disadvantage at the moment.
“You know ignoring others is very rude, don’t you?” Leo was the one to speak this time.
Danielle couldn’t help but roll her eyes at him.
She let out a very long sigh before turning back to the three man standing at the door and answering their previous question.
“I mean exactly what I said.” She said that as if the idea that they didn’t understand was absurd. But she noticed their confused faces only worsened and was forced to explain herself a little further. “Ugh... For werewolves you seem to know very little about your own kind. It seems you all believe there’s only one type of rogue.”
When none of them said anything, she continued.
“If that’s the case then you’re wrong.” Danielle turned her attention to the sounds coming from outside the window. If the growls and cries were anything to go by, they were certainly having a serious training session. “There are two different types of rogues in your kind. The ones you already know; who have lost their destined ones and so have lost themselves. And the ones who have been lured away from their own lives; creatures of the night who have been cursed or spellbound by someone else. They're not always werewolves.”
When she finally looked back to the werewolves she was not surprised to see how stunned they seemed.
“I suppose this is the first time you guys hear anything about this...” She mumbled to herself, sure that they all heard her.
The man who looked like he was the alpha cleared his throat awkwardly before speaking.
“So you mean you can make them turn back to normal? How?” He truly sounded like he wanted to know. Danielle wasn’t so sure she wanted to share that piece of information though.
“Why should I tell you anything? You dragged me here against my will.” She couldn’t stop her annoyance from showing in her face. “I’m a free person, you can’t just kidnap me and expect me to quietly collaborate.”
“Would you have come otherwise?” Aiden asked in a very monotone way.
She didn’t take more than two seconds to answer. “Obviously not!”
“See? That’s exactly why we had no other choice.” He made a gesture with his hand as if to prove his point. “I had to make a quick decision. I couldn’t let an opportunity such as this go to waste.”
“Would you go with two naked men that you’ve never seen before in your life if they asked you?” She arched her brows, trying to figure out if he was joking or if he was just plain stupid. “Two naked men that can turn into wolves and that were chasing you?”
This time Aiden didn’t say anything - seemingly having no excuse for that. His friend gave him a look that Danielle recognized from the day in the woods. They seemed to be talking through their minds again.
She had heard rumors about pack members being able to do that kind of stuff, but didn’t think it was actually true. At least not until now.
“I believe you see my point now... I’m glad.” She mumbled looking away from them in deeper annoyance. “But that doesn’t mean I forgive you. So you better let me go!”
The four werewolves looked at her like she had just made a very stupid suggestion.
“I believe we better not.” The one she had assumed was the alpha let out a brief sigh. “We need answers, and I expect you to be kind enough not to complicate things and simply cooperate.”
Danielle gave the man an incredulous look. She couldn’t decide on what she should react like.
Should she be outraged and yell at them? Should she simply get up and flee? Should she do a bit of both?
She had no idea of what her expression must have been like, but assumed it was something between flabbergasted and just plain stupidly confused. Either way it must have been something quite entertaining to look at, because she saw the look in Leo’s face change to one of amusement.
“She looks really cute when she doesn’t know what to say; very funny” Leo said with a laugh. “I think I like this one father.”
Danielle glared at him. Was he trying to get himself killed? She could help him with that.
“I’m not cute. And I'm definitely not funny.” She said in a warning tone. “And I won’t stay.”
Danielle turned her attention back to the three older werewolves.
“I will not stay.” She repeated. “Don’t expect an angry face and a few growls to get me to do as you ask. That kind of thing doesn’t work with me.”
They all stood silent, but Danielle could see in the alpha’s eyes that his dominating nature was getting difficult to be held back. But she wasn’t afraid of him; of any of them. Of course, she knew better than to disrespect an alpha into his own territory.
“You clearly have questions, that much I understand. And I won’t mind answering them. But we’ll do it in my own terms.” She moved to the side of the bed and pushed to her feet. “I’m leaving right now and you mustn’t follow me. I’ll be back in three days. Then we can talk about whatever you want.”
Danielle reached for her backpack that was sitting on the floor right beside her. She threw the bag over her shoulders and gave one last look at all the men.
“I really expect you to do as I ask, seeing as I have absolutely no obligation to be respectful towards you” she was directing these words to the nameless alpha. “You are not my alpha, and I haven’t committed a crime of any sorts in saving your son.”
Now all of the four men looked like they were talking to each other in their minds, but she didn’t stop.
“I don't trust you,” she said as she started making her way towards the door - which was blocked by the three elder men. “But I’m giving you all the benefit of the doubt.”
She stopped right in front of them.
“You sure are bold for a human,” the guy she still wasn’t sure of the name spoke with a side smirk. His voice resembled the one Leo had called Victor, but she wasn’t sure. “Very, very, bold.”
“Three days,” she repeated calmly and pushed her way through the men.
She didn’t look back, but knew she was being followed by all of them. None of them failed to notice how she walked around almost as if she had known the place her entire life.
Danielle made her way through the corridor, then down the stairs. She passed through a few more corridors on the first floor, catching the attention of a few strangers as she went. But none of that intimidated her in any way. Actually the only thing she was giving attention other than making her way out of the house was the footsteps behind her.
Danielle was very curious if those men would be able to respect her only request. It was nothing more than a test to see if they could be trusted. She wasn’t the type to go back on her word, but if they followed her then she would have absolutely no obligation to come back in three days as promised.
“We’ll be expecting your return for lunch,” the alpha’s voice rang from behind her back just as she stepped out of the house. “In three days.”
Danielle didn’t turn around. She just smiled to herself and continued forward towards the forest.
That had been unexpected.
Just as it should be expected of werewolves.
Crazy ass werewolves, she thought to herself as she began jogging south. She continued at a steady pace for a few minutes, then simply sped off in a full sprint home.
...
“Dad, do you really think that’s a good idea?” Leo stared at his father with his brow raised. He really believed otherwise. “Letting her leave I mean... We had her.”
“I’m actually with Leo on this one, Henry” Aiden crossed his arms over his chest. “I don’t think she’ll come back. I don’t trust her at all-”
“That’s precisely why we’ll wait for her to come back.” Henry smiled softly at them. “I’ve seen that look before... She reminds me of someone I knew and if I’m right; which I usually am, she’ll honor her words.”
“So...” Victor piped in. “What do we do in the meantime? Shouldn’t we at least put someone in charge to keep track of her?”
The alpha shook his head. “That would kill the purpose of all of this don’t you think? Letting her go means we respect her wish to be left alone for now. Following her is the one thing she asked us not to do.”
“But-” Leo started again. His father just gave him a warning look and that was enough to blow his following words out of him. “Understood, alpha.”
Henry turned on his heels and moved back into the house. He still had plenty of documents to go over and a few calls to make regarding that small little human.
He was still getting over the shock of learning the true nature of the sought after Moon Spirit that had been roaming the woods and putting down any threats like it was nothing. Of course he already expected it not to be a true spirit. But never, not even in his wildest dreams, would he believe the possibility of it being a single, simple human girl.
Alpha Henry let out a long breath as he entered his office. He squeezed his face, circling his desk before dropping into his leather chair.
“She looks so young. Even younger than my son...” he said to the empty room. “How...?”
He couldn’t even begin to wonder how she had managed to kill several alphas gone rogue, vampires and even those damned fairies when they got out of line. He couldn’t catch any extra scents other than hers once the wolfsbane wore off from her skin, so he knew she had been alone for months.
The idea that a single hunter could do all that to supernaturals and still be alive without as much as a scar made the hair on the back of his neck stand on end. The girl, Danielle, wasn’t a simple person. That much was clear.
He took out his cellphone and pressed a few numbers on it before starting a call.
The line rang a few times before someone finally picked up.
“My king,” Henry was the one to speak first. “I have news.”
“Henry, my friend” the man on the other side of the line had a friendly and calm voice. “How many times will I have to tell you? Just call me Beau.”
Henry smiled. “You know I can’t do that. You are my king.”
Alpha Beau sighed, but didn’t sound annoyed in the least. “Then as your king I order you to call me by my name. We're family.”
There was a brief moment of silence between the two before Henry spoke again, giving up.
“Fine, Beau, I have news. News you’ve been waiting for for a very long time.” An amused sound came from the other man, and Henry took that as a sign to continue. “We’ve made contact with our mysterious Moon Spirit.”
“What!?” Beau’s voice sounded slightly louder, and if that was anything to go by Henry assumed he had actually found a place to sit down on the other side of the line. He even sounded a bit out of air all of a sudden. “When- How did you even...?”
“Calm down old friend,” Henry chuckled.
“How can I calm down? This are the greatest news I’ve had in awhile! I mean... it’s good news, right? They’re alive right? What are they like? Is it really a spirit!?”
Alpha Henry couldn’t help but laugh in amusement at the king’s streak of questions.
“Oh, I can assure you she’s very alive. Alive and with an astounding sharp tongue.” The alpha was already expecting the shocked gasp that came from the king of werewolves. “If I tell you our paths crossed by mere coincidence would you believe me? As you might have already heard I had a delicate situation with my son a few days ago. He was taken by this... rogue alpha... Saved by the very Moon Spirit.”
Beau was silent for a moment, “That I didn’t know. Is Leo okay?” His voice sounded much more serious. “Was he hurt?”
“He’s absolutely fine, my king. The girl shot an arrow right into the rogue’s heart just as he was about to harm my son.” Henry felt a bitter taste in his mouth as he spoke of these past events, but it had to be done. “Aiden, the leader of our warriors was the one to spot her and they chased her into one of our allies’ territory. They managed to bring her into our pack, but she refused to stay...”
“You let her go!?” Now Beau sounded a bit irritated and incredulous. “Why would you do such a thing?”
Henry already expected a reaction like that.
“I had to. She would never trust us otherwise.” He waited to see if the king would protest, but he didn’t say anything. He decided to continue. “Now... the good news is that she compromised in returning for a proper conversation in three days.”
This got Beau’s attention again, and he hummed in acknowledgment. “I presume you truly believe she’ll return.”
“Yeah. I do.” He nodded. Even though the other couldn't see it.
“Very well...” The king took a deep breath. “Three days, huh? I believe it’s enough.”
“What do you have in mind, my king?” Henry could already guess, but decided to ask anyway.
“I would like to be present for this reunion, but I’m afraid I cannot leave my wife’s side at the moment.”
The Luna queen had been dealing with a strange illness and could barely leave her bed despite being a werewolf. No one knew what her illness was, and not even how she contracted it. It really just looked like a human flu. But it wouldn’t go away no matter what the doctors did.
“If you don’t mind I would like to send my sons to be present in my absence,” Beau had a smile in his voice. “Nash and Logan could use more responsibility, and I’d like them to bond with Leo as well. Seeing as soon we’ll be both retiring old friend.”
Henry hummed in reply. “Of course. It’ll be a pleasure to receive them into my house. I’m sure Marlene will be pleased as well.”
“Ah, my sister. How’s she?”
“Beautiful of course, as she’ll always be-” Henry responded almost as if that was too obvious, which made Beau let out a loud chuckle.
“I didn’t mean it like that, but that answer will do.” The king was still laughing quietly. “Well, I’ll explain the situation to the boys and they should leave later in the day.”
Henry nodded again. “I’ll start preparations as well. I’m planning on having this conversation during lunch. If you have questions you want to ask her you can have both Nash and Logan forward it to her.”
“Then it’s settled.” The king sounded content with it all. “Thanks for informing me on the matter alpha Lewis.”
“Of course, my king.”
...
Alpha Henry ended up working until late that night, and when he went to his room he expected to find his wife deep asleep. He was very surprised when he found her sitting on their bed looking through a few books.
“My love,” he called as a smile came to his lips. “You’re still up. Why?”
Marlene had a pencil between her lips that she didn’t put herself through the trouble of putting away. She just glanced at her mate with a tired smile.
‘I’m going through a few recipes,’ she informed him through their mindlink. ‘Since we’ll be having so many special guests I figured I had to make something different.’
“Well, I’m sure they would all be completely delighted even if you simply served them water.” Henry sat down next to her and put his arms around her waist. “Everything you do is perfect so don’t stress too much over this matter, okay?”
This time Marlene took the pencil out of her mouth and placed it between the book pages she was looking at. Then she closed the book and looked at her husband from over her shoulder.
“You’re still so silly, even after all these years.” She chuckled lightly when Henry placed a kiss on her cheek. “Tell me, what is this Moon Spirit like? I’ve been curious these past two days since you wouldn’t let me see them!”
Henry buried his face in the crook of her neck and breathed in her scent, feeling his wife shudder under his touch.
“Her name is Danielle.” He answered sounding a bit somber. “And she’s just a human.”
