Chapter 4Just as captain D’Arlan is leaving colonel Le Clerq’s office, which is not far from his own sleeping quarters, he hears the alarm whistle being blown. He surmises that Teuns and the Arab must have been scarcely over the wall, when he had gone looking for Teuns Stegmann. When he hears the sound of the whistle, he rushes to the gantry, flying up the stairs. When he gets there, he sees that the searchlights have already been switched on. He runs towards the northwestern corner of the fort, and just as the gunner prepares to pull the trigger to shoot Teuns and the Arab, D’Arlan shouts. “Don’t shoot!
