When I get to the living room, Ross is standing by the door. He looks lost in thought until he sees me.
"Edith, you look beautiful."
"Thank you, Daddy."
"How would you like to get some ice cream?"
"I would love to!"
We head out the door, and he drives me to a little ice cream shop. We both order two scoops of rocky road.
"Rocky road is my favorite daddy."
"Mine too, princess. How about we go for a walk?"
"Okay!"
We walk to a nearby park with our ice cream. It's a beautiful day for a walk.
"You know blue is my favorite color. I think you look gorgeous in it. I love how it matches your eyes, too."
"My favorite color is blue too, Daddy. Who knew we had so much in common."
"You know princess, I thought I had a lot in common with your mother. She seems to be different since we got married."
"I am sorry, Daddy. I wish I could have warned you about her first."
"Warned me about what?"
I stopped eating my ice cream for a moment. What can I tell him? I already regret saying something. Now, she will have two reasons to kill me. I slept with her husband and outed her. No, I just can't do it.
"I am sorry, Daddy. Please don’t make me say. Let’s not talk about her right now."
He is definitely thinking about it. He ends up shrugging his shoulders.
"We can stop thinking about it for now, I suppose."
"Thank you, Daddy." I give him a peck on his cheek and finish my ice cream."
"Maybe tomorrow we should take a day to think about us.You know our relationship in the future. Can I have your number, princess?"
"Sure, hand me your phone."
I take his phone and put my number in it. I send myself a happy face emoji, so I have his number, too.
"There we are all set."
"Marie doesn't check my phone, so text me if you need to."
"Do you ever check her phone."
"No, should I?"
I just shrug my shoulders.
"Have you always wanted to be a businessman?" I change the subject.
"No, I used to train dogs. When I was younger, I loved working with dogs. I took business in school to start my own training program, but I got a job offer once I graduated. That job offer kept getting better until I made it to the top. Now, I am too busy to even have a dog."
"I love dogs, but my mom hates them. I couldn't ever talk her into getting me a pet."
"She told me that she was allergic."
"Oh, well, maybe someday I can get a dog, and you can help me train it."
"I would love to. What kind of dog would you get?"
"Probably a Labrador retriever, and I would teach it to surf with me."
"That's right, you surf."
"I go anytime my mom will let me. It's one of the best feelings in the world."
"Your mom keeps you on a short leash for an 18 year old."
"It's complicated. I hope I can find a way to go to college, but she doesn't seem to want me to go."
"Maybe I can talk to her."
"You don’t have to. I don't want to start a fight between you two."
"Don’t worry about it. We won't fight." I give him a look so I don’t have to say your wrong out loud.
"We should get back home soon. I plan on sneaking out in the morning to surf, but I have to finish cleaning the house."
"Why are you cleaning the house so deeply?"
"Mom said that someone was coming over to give her advice on selling."
"She forgot to mention that to me."
"It’s probably not that big of deal. They will probably just do a quick run-through."
"Yeah, probably. " He looks a little deep in thought. I find his thinking face cute.
We turn around and walk back to the car. It was so lovely getting to know him. I feel like we could be best friends if we can talk like this more.
On the ride home, he keeps his hand on my knee. It feels so good to be touched by him. I hope we don't have to give this up. I know it’s wrong, but everything about him feels so right.
When we get back to the house, he gets his sunglasses that he originally was there to get.
"I have to go back to the office now, princess. I will miss you."
"I will miss you too, Daddy."
He unexpectedly takes me in his arms. He holds my head in his hand and kisses me. Our tongues dance together, and I let out a moan. When he pulls away, I feel weak under his spell. I don't think I can give this up, and by the look in his eyes, I don't believe he can either.
