It was Pete who first reacted when Soloman came through the batwing doors. He nudged Notch who sat absently dealing out cards for a game of Patience. ‘He’s back,’ he said. Notch gave Soloman a frown as his friend approached their table. ‘Well? What did he say?’ ‘He ain’t happy,’ said Soloman, dragging a chair from under an adjacent table and sitting down next to Notch. ‘Not happy at all.’ ‘But did he pay us?’ ‘Not yet. He wants to check through what we managed to get.’ Laying down his undealt cards, Notch allowed his eyes to roam away from Soloman to settle on the gunhands propping up the bar. ‘He sure does seem to have quite a few men, don’t he? Maybe he’s expecting trouble of some kind. I don’t like this, don’t like it at all. You think he’s set on double-crossing us?’ Grunting, So
