5 The pair returned to the house. All was quiet as they slipped in through the front door, but Ruthven froze. His eyebrows crashed down as he surveyed the foyer. “Something is wrong.” Adam came up behind him and frowned. “What?” The vampire’s eyes narrowed. “Something evil has been here.” Adam’s eyes widened. “Cate!” He tossed aside the papers in his hand and rushed past his vampire friend. Ruthven tried to grab his friend’s arm, but missed the sleeve by a hair. “Wait!” Adam flew up the stairs and flung open the first door on the left.
