2 The night was still in the dark alley. The shadows of garbage cans climbed up tall wooden fences. The remnants of a garbage collector’s sorry efforts littered the ground around the containers. A breeze stirred the litter from its slumber as a pair of shadows passed by in a flash of dark clothing and red eyes. The shadows were the vampire companions, Ruthven and Adam. They sped past the sleepy houses filled with laughter and blaring television sets, their forms barely visible to the eye of a curious cat at it watched them atop one of the fences. The vampires exited the alley and crossed a street to enter the next back street. They passed a jogger with their dog who, startled by the shadows, stumbled backward and fell flat on their ass. Their dog snapped and barked at the vampires
