CHAPTER FOURPerdita stared at herself in the mirror and was regarding her new gown with critical eyes. She had learnt a great deal about clothes since she came to London and, while before she had not taken a great interest in what she wore, now she studied her appearance and realised that the new fashion was vastly becoming. The off-the-shoulder evening dresses with their lace berthes gave her white shoulders and an elegance that she did not know they possessed, while the tight bodice revealed the budding maturity of her small breasts. Perdita’s gown was of pale green gauze shot with threads of silver, which made her look as if she moved through water.
