CHAPTER SIXThe Marquis walked slowly towards the gate into the garden of Berkeley Square. He opened it with the special key he had brought with him, as he had felt that it would not be appropriate to vault the railings in his evening clothes. He had, however, used his usual quickness of mind. It could well be dangerous for this unknown girl to come to him directly he had left the Comtesse’s house. It was unlikely, but many of the women he usually left would watch him from the window as they hated him leaving them. He left the gate unlocked and walked first under the trees as if he was heading for his own house. Then he turned back and went to the little Temple in the centre of the garden.
