“Where is he?” I burst into the room and Nathaniel doesn’t even look up from the papers piled in front of him.
“Thank you, “ he addresses the servant, finishing up a letter he’s been writing “I will call you if something needs to be done. “
“Yes, Your Majesty, “ the girl bows her head and leaves.
Nathaniel finally looks up at me when she is gone. He looks tired. Like he hasn’t slept in days. Maybe he hasn't.
Sirius said there was an uprising in the South. Did Nathaniel kill someone there, too? Of course, he has, how else could he put out an uprising…
Then Nathaniel leans in the chair and looks through the window, frowning.
I shift nervously. I haven't seen him in so long and being alone with him makes me want to go to him. To ask where he was and what happened. I notice his frown deepens as he shifts his weight slightly.
I shake the thought off. This is exactly what Sirius was talking about - you can’t trust your own thoughts around Nathaniel, or his betas. Maybe he is using Plade’s powers somehow to influence me even now.
“I need a favour, “ Nathaniel says eventually and turns to me.
This is when I laugh.
“AHAHHAHA. A favour?” I ask through the laughter. “ AHAHHAHA. No. By the way, you can’t trick me into doing it. Whatever it is you want from me..“
“I wasn’t going to try and trick you. “ he says.
“Oh, really?” I ask, mockingly.
I don't care how strong Blade’s powers are, whatever they are- I am not going to let myself be influenced by them. This makes me sick and I take a step away from him instinctively.
That’s when Nathan says:
“Your father is coming. “
I stare at him.
“Where?”
“Here. “ He says flatly. “To see how you are. To see if we’ve kept our part of the deal and you are safe in exchange for us, protecting your father’s lands and not attacking. “
My heart speeds up because I know exactly what he is going to ask me.
I approach his desk, not afraid anymore. I place my palms on the desk and lean slightly towards him.
“You need me to tell my father I am okay, right? “ I hissed. Nathaniel shifts forward and flinches. Very slightly, usually no one would notice it because he is trying to hide it. But I can tell there’s something.
Nathaniel places his elbows on the desk and looks up at me.
“If you don’t, “ he says, slowly, “This will mean war. “
“Well, maybe that's for the best. “ I lie.
“You can’t seriously think so. “
“All I know is my father is coming. And I am leaving with him. “
Nathan’s eyes don’t change, only his voice drops lower.
“If your wolves decide to attack we will put out the rebellion like it’s nothing. We can destroy your father’s lands in days.”
He is right. We both know it but I won’t relent.
“Do you really want all those wolves and people to die? Just because you are a spoiled little girl?”
“I am a spoiled little girl?” I say and squint my eyes at him, leaning further. My face is only an inch away from his. His dark eyes are fixed on mine, and despite everything, I can’t look away from him. The memory of the last time we were this close fills my mind and that makes me even angrier. I am not as stupid as I was then.
To want him to kiss me? To make me his?
No. I am no longer so naive. It’s never happening. Ever.
“You don’t know anything about me. “ I tell him, keeping my voice even “Don’t underestimate me. You think I am spoiled and acting on a whim? That because I am a woman I cannot think like a strategist and a king? So be it. But I know more than you think. I am not going to be one of your puppets. Because you are just a murderer. And you’ll get what you deserve. “
I push away from the table and head towards the door.
“My father’s wolves are not that weak, “ I say, proudly, “maybe you should start preparing for this war. And considering there’s a rebellion in the South - it will be difficult for you to fight in two places right?”
I smile at him and open the door.
“Have a nice day. Your Majesty. “
Once I am out of the door I finally exhale and close my eyes. Did I just provoke him? What if he decides to attack before my father comes?
No, no… I tell myself. Let's hope not.
I spent the rest of the day in my room. What will my father think of me when he sees me like this - my hair, how my body has started to change because of the training? My heart makes a painful pang. I almost felt like I could live here. How ridiculous… How could I trust Nathaniel, even for a second? He is a lying, cruel man. But he shouldn't underestimate me. My father is coming tomorrow night. It’s time he learned what they did to me and what is going on.

I wake up to the tapping sound.
“Opal?” I gasp as I see the bird behind the window. “I am not opening to you. I told you I don’t want to see you. “
He remains there, his eyes two black crystals in the dark.
“Get away. “
I get up nevertheless. I lean towards the window and see the bird holding something in his beak.
What is this…
“Did you come here to trick me into something?” I ask as I open the window slightly, letting a gust of cold air into the room. Opal is just a bird, he can’t really force me into anything, right? he is not Kai Or Maeve…
Or is he?...
Despite all those thoughts, I find myself opening the window wide enough for the raven to step in.
Opla drops the small glass in front of me and I take it- it's a tiny glass bottle. He is watching me as I examine it. It looks like perfume.
“What's this?” I mutter as I uncork the bottle and sniff it. “Why did you…”
I know this scent - my sister and the other wolves back home sometimes use this potion when they want to cover their scent.
Opal approaches and slightly pushes my hand.
“You want me to put some on me?”
He clicks his beak and I shake my head.
“I must be crazy for doing this. “
Yet, I pour the liquid on my skin and clothes and Opal comes into the room, then leads me to the door, urging me to follow him.
It’s the middle of the night and the hallways are mostly empty. Opal takes me to a part of the castle I am not familiar with and I slow down whenever he does. We are sneaking carefully around- I don’t know why, but I keep following him.
For a wild second, it feels like I am following a person, and not a raven.
Maybe I lost my mind. I am delirious, and none of this is happening. That must be it…
But as we take another turn I hear a loud voice. It belongs to Sirius.
