The storm outside kept us huddled together on my mat. Although Beth had begged to sit on the cot, I had no intention of using it no matter how comfortable it looked. Under Beth"s protests, we"d folded it up and rolled it into the corner of the room by the door. Bethany sat beside me, close enough for me to feel her body heat. She drew her knees up to her chest and buried her face into them. Her dark wavy hair fell around her. Her hands rested on top of her head, and she would cover her ears whenever the thunder boomed. While the room was warm, Beth shook like the rafters with each c***k of thunder. The rain pounded on the roof, and it was almost deafening. I could scarcely hear my breath.
