The morning sun battled the dense layer of clouds to provide the pack's area with a dull, gray light. An uncomfortable silence that hung thick in the air replaced the usual buzzing conversation and busy activity. Every inch seemed to be trenched with conflict, encircling me like a stifling blanket. Sitting by the worn-out cabin's wooden steps, I sat by myself with hands around a steaming mug of tea long gone cold. The warmth did not help much to drive away the cold settling deep within my bones.
