Elise stared at the birds as they chirped happily, wishing she was one of them so she would be able to spread her wings up in the sky as well. She didn't have to worry about anything if she was a little bird.
Her thoughts went back to the handsome blue-eyed man she met today. At first, she thought he was attractive at first glance but it seemed like whatever that he says to her or to anyone else while she was present, makes her uncomfortable.
It was frustrating, really. She never knew that a man can pop out randomly into her life and snatch her away from her family just like that as he pleases. The worst thing was, she has to go willingly as she had no other choice.
It was true then, life is really unexpected and unfair.
The birds chirped again, snapping her out of reveries. She looked up and smiled, noticing that the bird was sitting right in front of her. She extended her arm slowly, not wanting to startle the bird. The little bird hopped onto her palm, tickling her slightly.
"You know what?" Elise asked the bird in a small voice, bringing her hand up towards her face, "It would be nice if we swap lives" She sighed. The tiny bird blinked at her and shook its head.
"You will probably end up in a cage as someone's pet"
The bird squeaked and flew away, startled by a new deep voice. Elise frowned and slowly turned her head around to see her brother, grinning ear to ear at her, "Ezra! You made the bird fly away" She complained, shaking her head at him before turning her face to the front to look for the bird again.
It seemed like it had already flown far away from here. She sighed to herself as she pulled her knees closer to her body, letting her eyes stray away to look at the other birds.
Ezra's smile faltered. He knew that his sister was sad and he hated to see that kind of expression on her face. He skipped towards her and plopped down on the grass next to her, "I know you would be here" He stated, following the line of her sight.
Ah, she was watching the birds again. Something she really loved doing since she was a little child.
Elise didn't say anything to that. "Is the King is still at our place?" She asked, hoping he had already left. She wanted to go back home but if he was still there then she might kill some time here. She didn't want to face him again today.
Ezra glanced at his sister from the corners of his eyes, "No he left with his Beta" He announced making her let out a relieved sigh. He came here right away after the King left, desperate to check on his little sister as it has been hours since she left.
Elise nodded her head at his answer. She felt better when she knew that the King wasn't in their territory anymore."Why are you here?" She asked, turning her head to narrow her eyes on her brother, "I told you to not come after me" She stared at him pointedly, waiting expectantly for him to answer her question.
Ezra grinned again at his sister, "I came to see you moping like you have no other job" He joked lightly, hiding his worries, "And, when did I ever listen to you when you said that?" He added, shaking his head, answering his own question.
Of course, he was going to come after her. She should know that better than anyone else. He would always come after her after giving her some time alone to reassure her and make her feel better. That's their thing.
Elise huffed under her breath, taking what he said in an opposite way, "Well, I think I am good riddance to you too then" She muttered under her breath without thinking much about it, ignoring the jab in her heart. She needs to get used to the pain so she would be able to leave them in two days.
Ezra's eyes widened, "Elise!" He hissed at her angrily, displeased with what she had said. Did she really think that way? Did she really think that he would be happy here without her by his side? "I never said that!" He growled, some of his fur sprouting on his skin.
Elise realized what she had said and her eyes shot to look up at her brother in horror, "I am sorry, Ezra!" She cried out, putting her hand on his shoulder, "It's just, it felt like everyone's life here would be better if I am gone" She said, her eyes welling up in tears again.
She watched her brother shake his head at her, "Not for me" Ezra said, struggling to keep himself from growling at his sister again."I don't think so life would better without you here when you are the best part of my life!" He said everything in a single breath while she continued to stare at him, wide-eyed.
Elise sniffled, "I thought things will change permanently if I leave the Red Pride" She whispered under her breath, her eyes never leaving her brother even for once.
Ezra shook his head at her again. He inched closer towards her and put his arm around her body, pulling her to him, "You're my sister and it wouldn't change if you're near or far. You will always be my sister" He said, his eyes brimming with an abundance of emotions as he rubbed the side of her arm up and down comfortingly.
Elise watched her brother for a few fleeting seconds before throwing her arms around his body and pulling him into a warm hug. She sobbed against his chest, fisting the front of his t-shirt in her hands.
Ezra let his sister cry into his chest. He knows how hard it is for her and, to be honest, it was hard for him as well. He found a tear or two escaping from his eyes as well as he ran his hand up and down behind her back.
They didn't realize how time has passed as they both sat there, away from curious eyes, finding comfort in each other. The Sun slowly started to sink and the clouds turned orangy pink when Elise pulled away from her brother.
She took deep breaths, not wanting to cry again. She should go through this like a warrior she is. She shouldn't let this break her into pieces.
"Are you feeling better now?" Ezra asked, eyeing his sister worriedly. Elise hasn't broken down like this ever before. This was the first time he was seeing his sister completely let her guard down before him.
Elise nodded her head at her brother, patting her cheeks dry. She was okay now. Only she won't be okay when she leaves The Red Pride."It's just I can't believe I have to leave" She huffed, looking away from his concerned eyes, "Why did this happen? If it weren't for my powers-"
Ezra perked up at that, "What powers?" He asked her, interrupting her abruptly.
Elise bit her tongue, knowing she blurted out something she shouldn't. "That's right, I never told you about it" She muttered under her breath, avoiding Ezra's criticizing eyes, "Because dad told me to not tell anyone" She added in a much louder voice.
Ezra looked at her, puzzled, "I don't understand what are you talking about" He shook his head, waiting for her to elaborate.
Elise licked her dry lips, debating if she should tell him about the powers she had discovered within herself about a few days ago. Her father clearly told her to not tell anyone but this is her brother and up until now, she never hid anything from Ezra.
She looked at her surroundings. The forest was gigantic, clear, and flourishing. This is her favorite spot in the entire Red Pride and only Ezra knows about it. She loved to come here whenever her mind becomes a messy tangle.
The smell of the green forest always helps her to calm down and meditate.
She didn't know how to explain her powers to him so she decided to show him if she could. She took a deep breath and raised her hands in front of her. Elise narrowed her eyes on the trees, which were slightly leaning towards each other, and willed it to stand straighter, "Well, it usually won't-" She started, looking at her brother, and then a gasp left her lips.
Golden shimmering hues were escaping from her fingers and they traveled straight to the trees, "Holy s**t, I wasn't expecting that!" Elise shrieked, astonished as she watched the shimmering hues wrap around the trees and make them stand straighter.
Just like she willed.
Elise couldn't believe her eyes. She couldn't believe that she was the one who did that.
Ezra's mouth hangs wide open as the trees stand straighter. It took a few seconds for his mind to start functioning again as the visual image of his sister controlling the trees sank into his mind, "Did you just- did you just straightened up the trees?" He gasped, looking away from the trees to look at his sister who looked astounded as well.
As if Ezra's voice snapped her out from her own world, she blinked, and just like that the golden hues disappeared in a blink of an eye, "I guess I did" She gasped, looking down at her hands, "But how? I have to try again" She mumbled to herself and tried to will the trees behind those trees to stand straighter as well.
But no golden hues appeared on her hands, "What?" She grunted, shaking her hands in front of her as if it would start making the magic work again, "Why it is working?" She asked herself as she tried to use her powers again.
Ezra blinked again, "Wait, you're- you've got powers," He said. He struggled to form a proper sentence. He didn't know what he just witnessed, he couldn't find the right words to say to his sister.
"Yes" Elise nodded without looking at her brother who was watching her as if she was an alien, "Dad said I am an elemental" She added quickly before her brother could ask any more questions as she was busy trying to get her powers to work again.
But it doesn't seem like she was doing it properly because no golden hues appeared after that.
Ezra pondered about that. He did a study about elementals a few years ago from the book they had in the pack's library but he never imagined his sister would be one."So that's why the Alpha King is interested in you" He mused, putting two into two together, "I thought he is taking her away because you're a fox" He looked up at her again.
Elise huffed again before slumping her shoulders. She couldn't do it again. She doesn't remember how she was able to make the trees stand straighter in the first place. She thought it wouldn't work so she didn't give her full concentration on it.
"Nope" She sighed, looking at her hands again, "These powers- I don't know how to use them so the King had taken an initiative to assign a mentor for me" She revealed to her brother, looking up to see his face.
Ezra nodded, "Okay," He said. Elise clearly doesn't know how to use her powers, "That does explain why the King said he can't let us keep you here anymore" He continued.
Elise wouldn't be safe here if someone finds out about her. Ezra knew what her power meant for the supernatural world. Everyone would want her to use her for her powers.
"Yeah" Elise sighed, her face scrunching up again.
Ezra grinned and messed her sister's red hair, "But don't you worry, I've got your back" He said, springing up to his feet in a flash.
Elise looked up at him, "What does that mean?" She asked.
Ezra grinned, "It means what it means" He shrugged and noticed the confusion on her sister's face had deepened, "I am coming with you as well but I am only going to be staying for a week. Until you get comfortable there" He revealed to her, smiling.
Elise gasped before pulling herself up from the ground, "For real?" She asked, grabbing Ezra's bicep, a smile slowly curving at the corners of her lips.
Ezra nodded his head, "Yes, the King was the one to come up with this idea" He said, watching the smile on her face gradually deepen.
Elise couldn't contain her happiness, "Really?" She asked, she could dance in excitement now. Her brother, the next person who she always looked up to after her parents are going with her to the castle and it was enough to cheer up her mood.
Ezra chuckled softly, "Yep, so stop sulking and let's get our things packed," He said, prying her hand from his bicep only to intertwine with his long fingers.
As much as she was happy to have her brother there, she couldn't ignore the fact that he will leave her there after a week, "Still, I would have to stay there alone after you leave" She said in a small voice as they began to walk towards their house.
Ezra shook his head, "So? The King did tell you that you can visit us from time to time right? Besides, once you master your powers, he might even let you come back here" He said, glancing at her as they walked side by side, hand in hand.
Her eyes grew wide at that, "I didn't think about that" She said. How that didn't cross her mind? Maybe the king would let her come back to Red Pride to stay here forever once she learned all about her powers.
If that's true then she will have to learn as quickly as possible so she can return soon!
