His Son's Savior

1885 Words
RESCUE OPERATIONS TO FIND REE’S BODY immediately started as ordered by Christopher Reid, the father of the little child she saved. Christopher had the biggest fright of his life when he saw Edward his son in a near to death experience twice. He was immensely grateful to the woman who had saved the life of his son. If not for her, he would have lost Edward. He could not even imagine living a life without him. He was his treasure, his saving grace in some way, and it would kill him if he lost his son. Even though he was relieved that Edward was safe, although he had minor bruises here and there, he would find most relief if the woman who saved his son would be found, and if found, alive.   She was all Edward was talking about that it drove him nuts. It even went to the point that the child believed that she was his mother. The truth of the matter is, he did not know who Edward’s mother is. He was left and abandoned at his doorstep when he was still a baby. Even without any idea where he came from and who his parents are, and despite his family and friends’ suspicions and initial disagreement, he still adopted the baby after not finding a good and suitable home for him. Even so, the child arrived in his life when he was at the darkest phase of his life, and that child saved him. To him, whether he was his real son or not is of no moment. He is his son and a Reid, end of the conversation. “Daddy, did you already find Mommy?” said his five-year-old son. The people around them looked at him, curious as to what he would reply. Those people include his parents, grandparents, his sister, and his husband as well as some house helpers. “Edward… you, see…” “It’s okay. I know Daddy would do everything that he can to find Mommy. We will find her soon. I’m sure. She visited me in my dreams last night. She told me not to be sad because we will be together soon,” his son said with a genuine smile on his face. “Do not worry, my dear child. We will find your Mommy soon,” his mother said who earned a questioning glance from him. “Mom, I do not think it is right to do this,” he said. “What is right or wrong, son? Is it wrong that your son is longing for a love of a mother? You then can make things right by making her his mother,” she teased her son. Laughter can then be heard in the room. He sighed and just uttered, “Mom…” “If you were not so stubborn to not give your child a mother, then this would not be happening,” his grandmother added. “See? Even your grandmother is agreeing with me. You are already past the age of marriage, Christopher. Be a filial child and give me a daughter-in-law already,” his mom complained. Six feet in height, blessed with a chiseled face, a lean and muscular physique, bushy eyebrows, a pointed nose, thin lips, blue eyes, brown hair, an amicable, gentle personality—these features make him the subject of women’s admiration and men’s jealousy. However, Christopher is a family guy and a career-oriented man. Although he is the most sought-after bachelor in the country, he insists that he has no time for romance as he is too busy juggling the responsibilities of a CEO and a father, much to the chagrin of his family and his female admirers.   “Grandma, no! No one can be my mommy other than Mommy. She is my only mommy. No one can replace her,” his son said, defending his “mommy’s” position. He already could feel his head throb. This is what he was afraid of happening. How could he ask of the woman who saved Edward to be his mother? The question is, is she even alive? It would devastate Edward if the mother he claims to be his would turn out to be dead. It was as if his son read his mind when he suddenly said to him, “Don’t worry, Daddy. Mommy is alive.” It chilled him to the bones. How could his son know what he was thinking? His thoughts were interrupted when one of the house help suddenly called for his attention. “We got a call from the rescuers. They already found her body.” He immediately looked at his son, and happiness was evident on his face. His son then turned to him and said, “Daddy, I told you we would find Mommy soon.” He just shook his head and sat up. He was about to leave when he felt his son hold his arm. He crouched down his level to ask what he wanted. “Can I go with Daddy?” “Edward, the place where Mom…” he suddenly stopped before he could make the mistake of calling the woman his son’s mother. He heard chuckles behind him and that just confirmed that everyone heard his slip of the tongue. He sighed before continuing to talk to his son, “I mean, the place where she is is a bit dangerous. She would want you to be safe, so behave and stay here in the house. I will call you immediately once I know what… what happened to her.” “Okay, Daddy,” his son immediately replied to his relief. He thought he would insist. He then left and immediately proceeded to his hospital where the rescuers brought his son’s savior. Upon his arrival, he immediately ordered for her to be transferred to the largest room and for her to be given the best care all the employees of his hospital could give and offer. After giving orders, he then went to his good friend who is a neurologist and known to be the best in his field of practice. “So, what are your findings?” “Well, to be honest, it is looking too good, but we could make it better.” “Stop talking in circles, and just hit me with it,” he said impatiently which made his friend burst out in laughter. “If I did not know that this woman is your son’s savior, I would think that she is your girlfriend with how you flock around her, how you bark orders to give her the best treatment and hospitality, and how you treat her as if she’s a glass that could break.” “Ryan, she fell from a 15-feet tall cliff. Who on their right mind would treat such a patient brutally? And she’s my son’s savior, she deserves all that and more.” “Okay, if you say so,” he said, with a hint of teasing still present in his voice. “Now, can we already talk seriously?”   “Calm down, my man. As I’ve said, it is not looking good. It was her luck that she fell on the grassy land. However, the impact of her fall was still strong. Most of her bones were deformed or if not fractured. It’s a good thing that she is in a state of coma now. If she were conscious, she would not be able to stand the pain. It would also be bad for her if she would live on analgesics. It was a miracle that her vital organs were not harmed by the impact, but one major concern I have is the clots we have found on her brain. I am especially concerned about one particular clot. The others, not too much. Their location is near the veins which can adequately redirect blood flow. They will stop growing at a certain point and the body can accommodate them indefinitely. But there’s one clot that does not have enough veins to circumvent blood flow. It’s the biggest clot I have ever encountered since practicing my profession. The clot can expand even bigger, blocking critical veins. I’m afraid it will cause immense venous pressure and eventually cause a life-threatening attack or neurological damage, such as an ischemic stroke or a pulmonary embolism.” “You are scaring me, Ryan. If my son had just heard your ramblings, I swear he would have cried already.” “Sorry, I forgot you are not a practicing physician anymore, Mr. CEO. Anyway, the bottom line is, it is good for her to be in a state of comatose now. Her body can repair itself while we do our best to aid in hastening her recovery. With regards to the clots, I’ll try different treatment approaches. Do not worry. I will try my best to save her.” “You should because I do not know if my son could ever forgive me if harm comes to his mother… I mean, to her,” he said, immediately cursing silently that he had a slip of the tongue again. His friend just looked at him curiously. He then left his friend’s office and proceeded to his son’s savior’s room to visit her. After putting on the necessary personal protective equipment before entering the neurocritical care unit, he entered her room and took his time walking towards her. It was not his first time seeing her as he got a glimpse of her from afar as he was barking orders to his staff. He was told that her name was Ree and that she was already 30 years old. Looking at her, she looked beaten up. Her face was full of wounds, but he could still see the simplicity of the woman’s beauty. He felt his heart hurt at the sight of her. She was connected to numerous machines, tubes, and monitors to measure her heart rate, blood pressure, and other critical body functions. Some equipment even took over certain functions, such as breathing, nutrition, and urination. He held her hand and squeezed it, “I will do everything I can to save you. Just… just hang in there and be strong for us… for everyone, okay?” He was suddenly startled when her heart rate monitor displayed a sudden increase in her heart rate. It was indeed true that talking to a patient in comatose is helpful in the patient’s recovery as his friend told him. He squeezed her hand again and said, “Do not worry about anything else. I will take care of things out here for you. Rest well and come back to us when you are ready,” he said with a genuine smile on his face. Her heart rate continued rising, but not exceeding normal. Little did he know that she was about to start to live another life that was not her own.
