Amelia's Point of View
Strong arms placed my body on the most comfortable bed I had ever experienced in my life. For the last few months I'd been sleeping under trees with nothing to keep me warm other than old newspapers. I sunk into a mattress that promised me a deep sleep for hours on end. But no matter how comfortable it was, I missed Peyton's embrace as soon as he moved away. I felt so safe when I was in his arms. I must have really hit my head hard to be thinking like that. And what was it about his smell? If it could be bottled and given to the human world, it would make millions of dollars.
I heard chair legs scraping against the floor and the sound of him throwing himself into it. He was going to stay with me! I don't know why that made me feel better, but it did.
"Can I get anything for you, Alpha?" Trudy! Oh, thank the Moon Goddess that she was still here and not being punished as Gamma Nathan had threatened she would be.
"No, thank you, Trudy." Peyton's voice was clipped, almost rude. "You're dismissed."
"Yes sir," I heard the door open quietly.
"Oh and by the way, Trudy?"
"Yes Alpha."
"I understand from the Gamma that Amelia's injuries would have been much more severe if you hadn't been with her."
"I'm not sure about that Alpha-"
"Well I am. And I am eternally grateful to you. Thank you."
Trudy said nothing, I heard her leave the room and close the door quietly behind her. So if he was so grateful to her, then why did he sound like he wanted to throttle someone?
I wished I could look at his face, but my eyes felt like they were glued shut. I found his facial expressions were easy to read. Something in his eyes always seemed to give his thoughts away. He was my open book.
'Our mate wants us to rest, Amelia. Not listen to his conversations.' Typical Vae, always the more sensible of the two of us.
'Then he shouldn't be so bloody noisy, should he?" Ha! I had her there!
In Peyton's defense, he was only whispering and I could quite easily drift into oblivion. The trouble was I was too nosy for my own good. And despite my cracking headache, I didn't want to miss anything important.
"What the f**k was that about Nathan?" Peyton was careful not to raise his voice, but it didn't take a genius to work out he wasn't happy.
Ah ha! So that was where his hostility was directed.
"I'm afraid you're going to need to be more specific Alpha?"
Man Gamma Nathan had an attitude! What was his deal? He was really offhand when I met him for the first time. Then he was over friendly after I'd injured myself. And now he was back to being unpleasant again. I couldn't work him out. But until I did, I wasn't prepared to trust him one little bit.
"Don't be facetious," Peyton snapped, "it really doesn't suit you."
The Gamma didn't respond. Weirdly, I could feel Peyton's patience starting to slip. It felt like we were in sync with each other.
"Why the f**k didn't you mind link me straight away Nathan?" Peyton questioned in an angry whisper. If Amelia is hurt I need to know about it immediately. You're an intelligent wolf, surely you must know that."
"With all due respect, Alpha, you were at the hospital. The last time I checked, our orders were not to disturb you under any circumstances when you are visiting the building."
"Yeah well, my priorities have changed." Peyton almost sounded guilty about what he was saying.
"Well, I didn't get the memo on that one, I'm afraid." Nathan replied childishly.
"Neither did Trudy, and yet she seemed to be completely clear about what needed to be done."
I heard Nathan suck in a breath in shock. That was clearly a remark designed to hurt his ego.
"Look Peyton. I had just a split second to make a decision on what to do. I either took the Luna to the hospital, which, up until five minutes ago, I would have been given a roasting for, or I took her to her room, made her comfortable and then, mind linked you. Her head wound wasn't deep so I opted for the latter. And if you hadn't ploughed through the front door and seen her in my arms, I dare say you would have thought I'd made the right call."
"What exactly are you implying, Gamma?"
"That this reaction is down to jealousy and not logic. And I'm not implying, I'm flat out telling you!"
The room fell completely silent. Maybe Vae had been right. Maybe I should have just gone to sleep. Damn my stupid curiosity.
"You can take your leave now, Nathan, before I say or do something I'll regret."
"I'm already gone, Alpha." The way Nathan emphasized the word Alpha made me very uncomfortable. It sounded like he didn't respect his title. Or rather, he didn't think he deserved it. Nathan slammed the door hard enough for the whole pack to hear it.
Peyton gave out a long sigh. "Is it me or has he been acting completely out of character over these last couple of days?"
'Is he talking to me?'
'No, he's under the impression that you're asleep. There's someone else in the room.'
"I think Nathan is used to you being as miserable as he is. I don't think you being so upbeat works well with his personality."
That was Beta Finlay. How many other people were in this room?
"He's right about me being jealous though. I don't want anyone touching Amelia. She's mine!"
"I feel the same about Raya," Finlay agreed. "Chances are if I ever saw Nathan with her in his arms, I'd kill him before he even got the chance to explain."
"Well, thankfully, I held on to reason long enough to spare his life."
"Give it time, Alpha, as soon as you mark each other, it's a whole different ball game."
'Mark each other?' I asked Vae in fright.
'You know what they say about people who listen in on other people's conversations. They never like what they hear'
I made a conscious effort to fall asleep after that.
