Peyton's point of view
Who on earth was this girl standing in front of me and what had she done with the Amelia that wanted to cause me physical pain barely seconds ago? And did she just say that she was coming to live within my pack? Our Goddess really did work in mysterious ways.
"Are you teasing me?" I asked in utter disbelief.
"No, I'm taking this piss out of you." She told me. But there was the slightest hesitation before she gave me her answer.
"Surely they are one and the same thing." I tried some teasing of my own.
"Teasing is reserved for people that I like. So I am categorically certain that they are not."
Dice chuckled from the inside. 'She's funny. I like that.'
'Yeah well that makes one of us.' I huffed back in response, only I wasn't mad really.
She turned away from me for the second time and stood closer than was necessary to my Beta. It made me want to throttle him.
"Shall we?" She asked, offering her arm to him.
'You f*****g touch her and you'll be extremely sorry.' Finlay was my Beta and my best friend, but there was absolutely no way I would let him get physically close to her, no matter how innocent it might be.
'As if! I don't have a death wish.'
He looked at her arm like it was something unpleasant.
"Follow me please, Luna." Finlay said awkwardly, and took off at a pace fast enough for her to keep up but also out of touching distance. Finlay was smart. Finlay needed a raise.
I was about to follow on, when I felt something tugging at the hem of my shirt. I looked down and realized that I had momentarily forgotten all about Bethany.
I picked her up and balanced her on my hip bone and started out after Amelia.
"I don't know what you did, but I am forever grateful for convincing her to come with us." I had wanted this for as long as I could remember and I was absolutely elated with the way things had turned out.
"I didn't give her a choice." She stated matter-of-factly.
Her answer plunged a huge pin into my bubble and burst it.
"So she still thinks I killed Juliet?" I spoke my words softly so that people around us wouldn't be able to hear them. It was much easier to have this conversation when we were moving, as opposed to standing around.
"Yeah." Bethany responded without any further explanation.
"Do you think I killed Juliet?"
"If I did, do you think I would let her go anywhere near you or Amethyst Moon? Her shield would be back up and you would be incarcerated in Crulean Moon prison."
"Good point well presented." I agreed.
"Amelia knows absolutely nothing about her own species. It is clear just by looking at her that she doesn't know how to hunt and I am sure that it will still be incredibly painful for her when she shifts. Other than her mother, she has never spoken to another wolf until you and Finlay today. Everything that a Werewolf is taught from birth she has no idea of."
"What about mates and bonding?" I wasn't sure why I was asking. I knew I wouldn't like the answer.
Bethany shook her head. "You're going to have to work very hard, Peyton Butler. She doesn't trust you and therefore doesn't believe a single thing that you are telling her."
I felt like I'd been kicked in the stomach. I managed to carry on walking without dropping Bethany, but it wasn't an easy task. I had the sensation of being winded and was finding it difficult to stand up straight.
"She also knows nothing about breaking bonds, so you have some time on your side."
It was hard to see that as a positive. I nodded my thanks anyway.
"The Moon Goddess wants her with you for two weeks. After that she is free to leave."
"She'll never survive as a rogue!" I said, horrified. She was barely surviving as a human.
"Nor will she have to. She can go back and live among the human world if she chooses to. Or if she wants to remain with her own kind, then Alpha Lucas or Alpha Liam will take her in."
"How do I even start to convince her that I am not responsible for her mothers death." It seemed like an insurmountable challenge. I still had no idea why she blamed me. Perhaps it was because I was one of the last people to see her alive.
By now we had made it back to the car. Amelia had decided to take the passenger seat. Finlay looked at me glumly out of the back seat window. He hated riding in the back of the car and was usually up front. But Amelia was to be his Luna. If she asked him for something, he would try to give it to her. That was ingrained in his Beta DNA. If she accepted Amethyst as her pack, then the only thing he couldn't give her was anything that went against my Alpha decree. I didn't think I had any of those, so Amelia could have whatever she liked.
"Regrettably, that isn't something I can get involved with, I'm afraid."
Well, that was hardly a shocker. I was disappointed, of course, but I wasn't stupid. Bethany had done so much for me already. More than I could possibly have hoped for. I would be eternally grateful.
"But.... " She said, giving me one last smile. "I can send in some people to help you with your cause."
Whoever they were. They'd better be good at it.
