Alaric.
Asking me how long I’d thought I could hide from him.
A lot longer than I had, it appeared.
“What do you want?” I lurched off the wall but met his solid chest. He had me caged in such a way, he was inescapable. His breath was warm next to me. Still tainted with the hint of some wine.
And far too close.
“I’ll call for my Guards.” I gave him a hard shove but found his body utterly unrelenting. I tried to twist away but he caught my elbows and held me to him.
“Do you think any of them would hear you before I silenced you?”
Silenced? Killed or knocked me unconscious?
As far as his question, no.
He’s far too fast.
“What do you want, Alaric?” I said acidly. Working hard to hide the fact that he had me trembling so hard that I felt like my legs would give out.
“You know what I want.” His yellow eyes slid down my face and neck to the low cut of my dress. “You ran away because you knew.”
“No.” I denied. A bit too quickly. “I didn’t want to be claimed by wolves.”
He frowned and gave me a sideways look. “One wolf. Not many.”
I looked away.
“Why would you think you’d be claimed by many?” He asked slowly.
Did he never miss anything? I shifted uncomfortably.
“You do understand that’s not even possible. Claimed means mated. And you can only be mated to one or a chosen few. Unless you were taking claimed as meaning something else, if so, I’d dearly love to hear what…” His voice was a husky rumble that was sending goosebumps running up my neck.
“I want to be free, Alaric. I don’t want to belong to a pack.”
“How about belonging to me?” His eyes roved the deep cleavage over my dress before levelling on my face.
“I know what you are. I know what you’ll do. You’ll drag me back to them.”
“To them? To my pack? And if I didn’t…What would you do then?” He challenged coolly.
“If I took you back. It would be for myself. Not for them. But I don’t have to do that.”
“Draven-”
“Draven is my brother.” He cut me off. As if that was enough said on the subject.
There was a long moment of silence.
Too long.
He’s too close. I thought again. Wishing he’d back away enough I could think.
“Perhaps, I’m not what you think.” I murmured. Thinking it worth a try.
He grinned broadly and tilted his head in warning. “That’s not going to work, Lara.”
He shook his head slowly. “Dress like a human, play with humans, lie with a human…”
He leaned forward to inhale the scent of my hair. Before whispering nearly against my lips. “Still smell like a she-wolf.”
He’s thinking about taking me here and now. I could feel his arousal crackling through the air. His very male presence, nearly all consuming. He was exuding the smell of a male wolf. He shifted his weight sideways and I knew he was controlling the urge to drive into me right against the wall.
I could call for my guards. My frantic mind suggested.
But then the question became, would he kill them?
Or me?
I knew he was full of vindictive rage that he had declared I’d be his mate and I had bolted from the pack. Foiling him and all his pent-up desires.
But I’m not backing down now. I can’t…
I won’t go back.
“Have you considered that I may not be a wolf?”
“Yes.” He nodded. “And I’ve considered the possibility that I may be a eunuch too.”
He glanced down his body pointedly. “Then I realized I was wrong.”
He pressed himself against me and I instantly felt the evidence of his statement as his hand crossed around to my back and slid down to cup my ass against him. “Do you know, that even when you sit and toy with me thus, I can smell you dampening. The scent of you is alluring. This is the difference between us and your humans. We can play in our skin. But at the end of the day, we are animals that can recognize the arousal of the other gender. The aromas that defy our human words.”
“I’m not what you are.” I hissed.
Not an animal.
“I could have you here, Lara. No one would hear you. And your sweet body would welcome me in. You know you’re as drawn to me as I am to you.” He murmured.
Making me shiver. Making me lean into his warmth despite all my attempts to focus my mind on what he was. And what he was really saying.”
He’s going to take me back to them.
“So, my only question, is why you’re so intent on evading me?” He reached up and ran the back of his hand down my cheek. “Look at you. You lean into my touch.”
“You offer me your body.” He glanced down purposefully.
I followed his gaze in shock and realized that I was rubbing my lower body against him. My hands against his chest as I’d readied to push him away. One of my legs bordered his so I was open to him. I gasped in shock and took as much of a step back as I could. Jolting against the wall and looking up at him, stunned.
“How’d you do that?”
“I did nothing.” He leaned back. Lifting his hands in surrender. “You want me, she-wolf. And you are going to come to me…”
“No…” I shook my head in panic. “I won’t.”
He smirked. “Are you trying to convince me. Or yourself?”
