Not So Brilliant Boys

1043 Words
Riley The boys’ wolves were starting to go a little crazy at not being able to get very close to their mates. Even with the shielding potions, it was hard. Bandit in particular was having trouble. That being so we decided we needed to find a way to let them actually meet their mates. Walker had overheard Beau’s mate, Harper talk to her brother again about having a picnic at the rec park which confirmed what I overheard. It has soccer fields and the only sand volleyball court in the pack. Theo wanted to play volleyball, so it looked like we had an excuse to be there. When we first arrive, there’s only one female sitting under a tree. The one with the ash blonde hair I keep seeing walking every morning but never see her anywhere else. When Brody hits the ball out behind us from our side, I dive to get to it, slamming myself into her blanket. She doesn’t jump or flinch at all which is impressive. I look up and see the most beautiful pair of dark green eyes. I remember introducing myself so I could learn her name. Ellie. Her voice is soft and soothing, and her smile is sweet. I hurry back to the game, and we continue playing as the guys’ mates have camped out on her blanket, openly watching. She reads and ignores us. Brody suggests using the ball to get closer to them. “Just go introduce yourselves. Most of them are staring this way already.” I tell them dryly. Beau mutters, “Easy for you to say. Your mate’s not over there.” Theo sounds amused. “No, but there’s an unmated one there that seems to have caught Riley’s attention…” Brody: “The quiet little ash blonde?” Theo teases, “Yep, he gave her his megawatt smile most ladies never see. Brienne would be jealous.” I scoff disgustedly in the link working hard to keep from sounding embarrassed.“Brienne needs to be sent to another dimension.” "Deflecting your interest in the pretty girl Riley?” Beau throws in snickering. I roll my eyes. Landon: “She is completely ignoring us, which is interesting.” Brody: “Oh come on, Prince charming, you can flirt with her. Bet she’d flirt back if she knew who you really were.” I shake my head. She’s pretty, but more importantly, she’s ignoring us completely like Landon said. Reading her book instead. It piques my attention. Just then Beau comes back from getting the ball and he for once is pink cheeked and looks a little cowed which is not his normal. He links us, “That quiet little blonde is damned observant. She told me we’re invited over for brownies since that would be easier to do than to, and I quote, keep losing the ball so strategically.” Landon chuckles. “We’re not as brilliant with females as we are with pack battles and strategy. Please tell me you accepted her humbling invitation.” “You know I damned well did. Never shun a golden opportunity.” Beau sounds almost offended. “Then let’s appear to wrap this up so you can see your mates.” I tell them. After introductions are made, I almost laugh. Ellie makes no move to attract any attention. She’s reading her book and we use that to get her to talk but she’s tight-lipped. Walker links Brody and I. “This is harder than I thought. How do you convince a female to talk about herself?” Brody: “Not sure. Usually, we can’t shut them up whether they know our names or not.” “She tries not to be noticed is my guess. I saw her rushing past the packhouse and looked relieved when she passed it unseen. Maybe she flies under the radar normally. Most of this group makes themselves scarce.” Walker: “The mates are getting along well. We can hopefully find out more about this pack’s issues.” Brody: “Alpha Kincaid is probably at the heart of our anonymous complaints. I’d bet money on it.” Walker: “He’s a pompous ass Alpha son, that much is certain. Might have a conquest list like a lot of them do.” I tune back in to realize they are inviting us to Ashley’s family rec room tomorrow. Theo accepts readily. Brody asks Ellie what else she does for fun, and she shrugs, “Not much. I’m pretty boring.” Theo’s mate, Lydia swivels her head at that “Ellie…” She says in a gentle warning tone. As Ellie looks at her Lydia says cryptically“don’t forget the rain.” She nods. I keep my face impassive as I watch the two of them. I see Theo staring thoughtfully as well. The girls all need to get home and we leave for the packhouse. Once we climb in the car, Brody asks, “wolves more calm?” Everyone nods. Theo: “Bandit is not ready to go bloodlust anymore and he’s thrilled he’ll see her again tomorrow.” I nod. Bandit is the one we needed to appease. He is viciously deadly on a good day. Bad days are when entire packs could die. Theo is the mildest personality until you anger him, then he and Bandit are neck and neck on the brutality scale. He’s the best Beta I could ask for. Once I find my mate, I know he and Bandit will protect her fiercely. Beau is the same way, but his wolf is not nearly as vicious as his brother. And my wolf Ghost is barely below Bandit brutality and sheer willpower wise. Sometimes, my father's wolf Grimm is the only one who can stop Ghost from using his royal aura at full blast. He's always wondered why I, as the second born prince, was gifted the strongest wolf in the family. Ollie's wolf, Chaos, is definitely the tame one. As we get to the suite, Theo links me with a question and I tell him I caught that too. We decided to make sure we pay closer attention to it tomorrow and see if our other four notice the same thing.
