Mason’s POV
“Keira?” I shout into the phone. Frustration and confusion overwhelm me as I realize that she’s already hung up.
My door bursts open, revealing Lily.
“Did you just say Keira?” Lily asks me eagerly. Neither one of us has seen or heard from Keira in months. We’ve never gone this long without speaking before.
“Yeah she called. She uh..” I trail off, Lily is a major hothead, perhaps it’s not a good idea for me to tell her.
“She WHAT?!” Lily snaps.
“She didn’t sound great she said she’s gotten herself into a mess.”
Lily lets out a low growl, then knocks over a nearby chair.
“Lily calm down.” I warn her. Though I should know better, Lily can get a little scary when she’s mad, if she wasn’t so short I might seriously consider her for my future beta.
“Call. Her. Back.” Lily says through clenched teeth, emphasizing every word.
I dial the number, and put the phone on speaker. Lily and I listen as it rings and rings, then goes to voicemail.
“Something’s not right.” I say, as I hang up the phone.
“You think?!” Lily yells. She’s growling and seething with rage. She turns toward a nearby shelf and with one swoop of her arm, knocks off all the items. They crash to the ground, a few of them shattering to pieces.
“Lily, seriously stop! That’s not helping anything.”
“You aren’t helping either! You love her but you’re just going to stand by and let someone hurt her?!”
I instinctively look around to make sure there’s no one nearby that can hear. I do love Keira. But I don’t want the whole world to hear. Keira has a fated mate, those are one in a million. No one rejects their fated mate. No one.
“Uuugh! I hate feeling so helpless! We’ve got to do something.”
Lily whines.
“We don’t know what’s going on, we need to get our facts straight before we burst in there and cause a pack war.” I say. Lily looks defeated she slumps down in a nearby chair, her fire’s all burnt out. I walk over to her.
“We need to figure out what’s going on. How do you feel about a road trip?” I ask. Lily immediately perks up, her smile spread wide across her face. I can’t help but smile too.
“Great! Pack your bag and meet me at my car in ten mi-” Lily starts. Of course she starts bossing me around.
“Clean up this mess first.” I interrupt her. “Then meet me at my car in fifteen.” I say before leaving.
***********
“So did you ask your dad?” Lily asks me. We’re almost at Pale Moon Pack. The drive alone has taken up most of the day.
“Not exactly.” I admit. Lily laughs.
“Well it’s always easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.” She says.
“My thoughts exactly.”
We pull up to the borders of Keira’s new pack. A guard stops us at the gate. Pretty standard procedure for unknown vehicles.
“Hi. We’re here to visit Keira. I’m Mason and this is Lily. We’re friends of hers from her old pack.” I say with a smile. The guard gives me a quizzical look, as he holds his head high. He looks way too proud for a simple boarder guard.
“I’m sorry who are you?” The guard says. The first thing I do is put my arm on Lily’s shoulder and push her back down into her seat.
“I’m Mason and this is Lily. We’ve come to visit Keira the future Luna of this pack. She’s Dawson’s mate.” I explain. I could throw around that I too am an Alpha’s son but that’s not really my style.
“Hmm, okay hold tight.” The guard says before retreating back to his station.
We wait for ten minutes before we see Dawson pull up to the gate. He walks over to my car.
“Hey Mason, how’s it going man?” Dawson says leaning over the window.
“Hey Dawson. Things are going great. We decided to pop over and see Keira. It’s been months and this girl misses her best friend.” I gesture to Lily. She fakes a smile at Dawson, though not a very good one.
“Oh guys I’m so sorry. Keira’s not here right now. She’s visiting my sister’s pack and getting some Luna training from her.” Dawson says. There’s a cockiness in his tone that’s rubbing me the wrong way.
“That’s strange, she didn’t mention that when I spoke to her on the phone earlier today.” I say matter of factly. I see Dawson clench his jaw.
“Well I guess just give her a call back and ask her where she is. Sorry man, but she ain’t here.” Dawson says. We’re both clearly annoyed, but we’re still pretending to be friendly. I certainly won’t be the one to break appearances. I pull my phone out and dial Keira, then just like before I put it on speaker phone and let it ring for us all to hear. And just like before it goes to voicemail.
Dawson has a smug smile on his lips.
“Sorry man. She’s a busy woman now that she’s going to be a Luna. Maybe it’s time you guys moved on. I mean, how many times have you even spoken since she left? I get it, you’re both in love with her. But she has a mate now, a fated mate.” Dawson emphasizes that last part. My hands clench against the steering wheel.
“What a jerk.” Lily says loudly.
“Excuse me?” Dawson replies quickly.
“You are a jerk. Why the hell the moon Goddess gave you Keira is a mystery to me. She deserves way better than some rude, alcoholic, wanna-be alpha.”
Silence befalls the Dawson and I. Mine fueled by panic, and Dawson’s by shock. I need to get us out of here before things get any worse
“Why you little-“ Dawson begins.
“Well thanks for the info!” I say loudly, trying to cut off Dawson’s train of thought. “We’ll be leaving now.” I add in quickly as I put the car in reverse and slam on the gas.
I turn the car around and zoom out of there. I check my rear view mirror and see Dawson standing with his arms crossed, watching us leave.
“What the heck are you doing?” Lily asks me frustrated.
“What am I doing?! Lily have you lost your mind? We are in another pack’s territory, and you’re insulting their future Alpha. You can’t fight off the entire pack Lily.”
“I could try.” She grumbles. We turn onto the long road bordering Pale Moon pack, I stop the car at an opening in the trees where we can see the main pack house.
“She’s in there somewhere.” I remark staring at the pack house.
Lily calls her again, with no answer.
“Ugh! Do you think they took her phone?” She asks.
“I don’t know. Maybe she is visiting his sister.. maybe she left her phone.”
“Don’t tell me you actually believed that phony.”
I shake my head. I miss her. I wish I could just see her again.
“Can you still mind link her?” Lily suggests.
Actually not a bad idea, there’s a hazy period when someone switches packs where they might still be able to recive midlinks from those they were closest to in their old pack. Some family connections are so strong they continue to keep their mindlink for years.
“We’re pretty far, but it can’t hurt to try.” I close my eyes, and focus my mind solely on Keira. Then I reach out.
‘Keira? Can you hear me?’ I pause.
‘Keira it’s Mason. Are you there?’ I put my fingers to my temples and search for any whisper of her thoughts- when suddenly my phone rings loudly causing me to almost jump out of my seat.
Lily chuckles. But both of our faces drop when we see that it’s my father calling.
“Looks like it’s time to ask for forgiveness.” Lily says.
