“What happened?” Saanvi asked.
Isa looked at her like she’d never seen her before, and Saanvi saw the change that was wrought by whatever horror she encountered. She’d hardened.
“What’s happening here?”
“It’s nothing,” Saanvi said. “I’m handling it.”
Isa didn’t seem to believe this. Her eyes searched Saanvi’s face, looking for cracks. They flicked over to Jamal, and she went to him. Jamal squirmed in the glow of her attention. He shuffled his feet, put his hand over his lip. She gently pulled it away, tracing the bruise forming around his mouth.
“Did he do this to you?”
“No, I—”
She turned away again, impatient, and strode up to Brody.
“Jesus, lady,” he said. “You look a mess.”
“Let me see your hands.”
He put them behind his back.
