Aleksa POV
“Lachlan Fang. It has been a while. Release me from this cell immediately,” Jackson demanded.
“Apologies, old friend. It seems there has been a misunderstanding. My warriors clearly did not know who you were. Otherwise, they never would have locked you up here,” Lachlan said as he unlocked Jackson’s cell.
Jackson pushed past the cell door and walked up to Lachlan. “I expect someone will be held accountable for this. I wasn’t even on your territory when the attack started with the rogues.”
“Yes, Jackson,” Lachlan said, a hint of annoyance clear in his tone.
“I will sort this out. We rarely interfere if an attack is happening outside of the pack territory, so I’m not sure what has happened in this instance,” Lachlan insisted.
Sitting in my cell watching this exchange, as I leaned forward, Jackson looked in my direction. Our eyes met. I felt this feeling of warmth and safety when he looked into my eyes. I couldn’t understand what was happening to me. Was I delirious from the lack of sleep?
“Tell me Lachlan, why is your Luna sitting on the floor in this goddess-forsaken dungeon?” Jackson asked.
“My Luna and I are having a minor disagreement about something. I’m teaching her a lesson. Don’t worry about her. Let’s get you upstairs. I think we need to have a whiskey,” Lachlan said while motioning for Jackson to proceed forward.
“I can’t imagine what one would do to warrant being thrown in the dungeon and treated like a criminal, Lachlan,” Jackson declared.
Now Lachlan was the one who was snickering.
“That’s not your concern, Jackson. Come now, let’s get you on your way,” Lachlan motions him away towards the stairs.
Jackson looked back at me with a look of regret. I saw that he didn’t feel good about leaving me here like this, but he couldn’t do anything to help me.
Once they were gone, I sat back against the wall.
There was something about Jackson. He seemed to have a powerful aura about him, perhaps even an alpha aura. And Lachlan seemed to know him well. I’d never heard him mention him before. I was curious what their connection was. There was just something about him.
I would just keep waiting and pray to the goddess that Caleb was back soon, and he could help me. I closed my eyes, and I wondered if maybe I could steal a few moments’ sleep. I was mentally exhausted.
“Aleksa, it’s me, Caleb, you need to wake up.” I heard the words drifting into my mind. Was this in my dream or was I waking up? I couldn’t tell. I opened my eyes, only to find Caleb standing in my cell.
“Caleb, you came! You don’t know how happy I am to see you. How did you go? Will Kali help?” I whispered to him anxiously, as
I stood up from the ground in anticipation.
“Luna, Kali has agreed. I told her of your plan and she has agreed to get Liam and Layla together and they can meet us near the training grounds. From there, we can run to the far right of the border. No one will be around, as you know, because no one ever goes to that side of the territory. Plus, if we time it right, we can go after lunch. There will be a pack meeting in the large dining hall. Everyone will be busy there."
“Now for the hard part, Luna, getting you out of these cells. I see Chad is on duty tomorrow afternoon. We are gonna need a good distraction, or we will need his help to pull this off and get you out of the dungeon. Any ideas?” Caleb asked.
“Informing Chad of our plan is too risky. I think we need to keep it to the three of us.”
“I’ll be your distraction,” Kaia offered. “Aleksa, these dungeons carry sound, and as you know we are all werewolves, we will help you escape. No woman should have to suffer like this, especially not one with pups.”
“Kaia, I can’t ask you to do that for me. You are stuck here, too. And you barely know me. Why would you do that for me?” I asked.
“Us she-wolves need to stick together. Besides, it will be worth it, oh to see the look on that arrogant alpha’s face when you escape with his pups!” Kaia snickered.
“Thank you, Kaia, but perhaps we can get you out of here too, Caleb?” I suggested.
“Well, we may as well go big, since we are doing this, anyway. If Kaia causes a distraction, I will knock Chad out, buying us a bit of time. I feel bad doing that to my friend, but getting you out at all costs is my number one priority, Luna,” Caleb said in a noble manner.
“It’s settled then. Kaia will escape with us at 1:00 pm tomorrow. We will escape through the back entrance of the dungeon. Then we move as fast as possible in our wolf forms to the back of the training grounds, meet Kali, Liam, and Layla from there, and take off to the far edge of the boundary. I will leave a black SUV there so we can leave the territory as quickly as possible. We will head south to a human town and go from there,” Caleb declared.
Then a sound came from the cell next to me. “I hope you have room for one more,” Mason chimed in.
I’d gotten so caught up in the plan I had forgotten that Mason could probably hear everything, too. Of course, we couldn’t leave him here. I mean, we had to go past his cell to get to the back entrance of the dungeon.
“Of course, we have room for one more,” I said, glancing at Caleb, who was appearing more anxious by the moment.
We hadn’t intended to be breaking out prisoners, but in order for this plan to work, we must take some risks. Besides, I liked Mason and Kaia. They seemed like good people who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“It’s settled then. Tomorrow afternoon we will all escape together! Mason and Kaia, I have nothing planned for once we get to the edge of the boundary. I was just planning on driving until there was a great distance between us and the pack. As Lachlan will come after us. You are both welcome to join us as long as you need to,” I offered to my new friends.
“Thank you, Luna,” Mason said appreciatively. “I will take you up on that offer. I don’t wish to end up in these dungeons again.”
“I will take you up on that offer too, Luna. I have no idea where I am going. I need to get some more distance between me and my former pack, as well as this one. I was just planning on living in a human town for a while, while I figure out what my future plans are,” Kaia responded.
“Well, there you go, Caleb. We have everything sorted. We will escape together and we will leave these goddess-forsaken dungeons,” I said, holding my head up high.
“Caleb…” I asked, “How are Liam and Layla? I miss them so much it hurts. What have they been told about me? Surely they are wondering where I am? I question him, as my emotions get the best of me.”
“Luna, the alpha, has told them you had to leave for a while, but you would be back soon,” Caleb said as he took a breath.
“The twins think you are away on pack-related business and they are none the wiser. Luna, forgive me for saying this, but Eva has been tending to them.”
“What!” I yelled. “That evil b***h is playing mother to my pups!” I’m so overcome with anger, I’m fighting the overwhelming urge to shift. I felt my eyes were flickering, and it usually happened when they changed color. My claws were elongating and fur was starting to sprout all over me. I wanted to rip that evil b***h’s head off. Calm down Aleksa, I told myself. We would be free of this place soon, and Lachlan and Eva could live out their sick fantasy.
I eventually fought the urge to shift into my wolf form and I felt my eyes were changing back to their usual color. The fur and my claws were disappearing. I took some deep breaths and tried to focus on the fact that my pups were being cared for and they weren’t worried or sad that their mother wasn’t there.
“Please, Luna, you will be reunited with them soon enough,” I said, urging her to be patient. “I need to get going. I’ve been down here too long. I need to keep working on this to ensure everything goes according to plan and not to arouse any suspicion. I will be back tomorrow after lunch. I will need to attend the pack meeting initially and then come up with an excuse to leave. Then I will come here and we will get you out of here,” Caleb reassured me.
“Caleb, I can never thank you enough for what you are doing here and the risks you are taking. And Kali too. Please tell her I appreciate her sacrifice so much. I will repay you both one day,” I said graciously to Caleb.
Caleb bowed his head and exited the dungeon. I sat back in my cell. Breathing a sigh of relief, knowing that soon I would be out of here. And surprisingly, feeling relieved that Kaia and Mason would come too. We had bonded a lot since I had been in the dungeons with them. I felt bad for them. They had been down here for so long and had not yet been seen or heard by anyone. This wasn’t what I had expected from this pack. I thought we were a kinder pack.
Clearly, all was not as it seemed. I’d taken this time to rest because tomorrow I would need all the strength I could muster. Because tomorrow we would get out of this pack. I didn’t know where we were going. But what I knew was that wherever it was, it would be far from here.
