Zoe's mischievous grin was illuminated by the moon as she proposed the idea of late-night cliff diving. My stomach churned. "No, absolutely f*cking not," I refused.
Zoe rolled her eyes, "Belle, live a little, besides cold waters are great for hangovers."
"And cliffs at night are great for ending your damn life," I chastised, eyeing the dark expanse below the cliff. Given it wasn't a significant drop, I'd jumped off it many times during the day. But with the moon hanging low in the night sky, only a silvery glow cast along the surface of the water below. If there was a rock, we wouldn't know until it was impaling us.
Ignoring me, Zoe discarded the last of her clothes, leaving her in nothing but her swimsuit. When she suggested a swim, I initially thought it meant a midnight dip from the shoreline. But nope, instead, she chose the rocky cliffside.
Reluctantly, I peeled my top over my head, shivering despite the warm breeze as I followed her to the edge. The distant sounds of the night surrounded us as we stood side by side. I was paralysed in fear while Zoe squealed, shaking out her arms in excitement.
If there was ever a time that showed Zoe and I as opposites, it was this one.
As Zoe asked, "Ready?" excitement rang in her voice, I barely had a moment to respond with a hesitant "Not really" before she took the plunge, diving into the water below without a second thought.
