Chapter ThreeIt was very hot, the sky was cloudless and now that Selina and Quintus Tiverton were away from the mountains it seemed impossible to believe that it had been so cold and windy the night before. As they rode slowly down into the Oos valley, they began to find the tall pines of the Black Forest surrounding them. Selina was, as Quintus Tiverton had predicted, feeling very stiff and her back was extremely painful from the beating given her by Mrs. Devilin. Nevertheless she would have endured far worse pain without complaint because she was so ecstatically happy in the knowledge of having escaped and no longer being afraid of what lay ahead. When Quintus Tiverton had knocked on her wall, she was already awake. She found it almost impossible to sleep for more than an hour or so
