Chapter Four Friedrich Max lived in a sprawling house known as Old Hickory Manor, located high on a hill near the edge of town. In the last year, he had assumed the task of renovating the aging structure. It had been part of a large estate in its early years; the first incarnation built in the late 18th century. Much of it had been badly burned around 1820. From then on there were several additions and renovations that turned the estate house into an intriguing structure, complete with secret passageways, odd dead ends and some unusually large rooms. Among those larger rooms was the living room where Friedrich’s gatherings normally began. His unusual home with its blatant trappings from the past appeared to be a perfect environment for the kind of “Fetish” gathering he would host that n
