TERESA AWOKE AS THE shooting started. Francisco approached her holding a finger over his lips in a silence signal.
“They sound very close. They come from the mouth of the cave” whispered the man “ let´s not move until we know where we stand.”
“ But, who can be shooting?” replied the young woman, with a hint of renewed hope.
“There is no doubt that McPherson and his group will be looking for us. It is likely that they have asked for help to the Peruvian authorities. We must remain hidden until night and then go as far from here as possible.”
“But in that case we will be away also from those who come to our rescue. Wouldn't it be best to stay within the tunnel system? Here, it seems safe, and we can even light a fire.”
