“What did you just say?”
“I said, I would recommend you to my husband's best friend. You know him, I think. Kendrick Santana?”
“For what?” She seemed annoyed to hear what her best friend said. He is killing her with curiosity.
“Why do you seem to be in a bad mood?”
“Work and bills!”
“Well, Kendrick Santana is the answer.”
“Kyle, will you tell me straight about it? Stop killing me with curiosity. You don't want to lose a friend like me, right?”
Kyle laughed at the opposite line but still, he didn't give the full details as he also didn't know about it. His husband had just told him that Kendrick was seeking help and Samantha might be interested in it. Kyle Delos Santos is Samantha's gay best friend who is the husband of Carlo Madriaga, who is also Kendrick Santana's best friend.
Samantha recalled how Kyle told her about the job while waiting for him at a restaurant. She subsequently called her best friend after she left the hotel lounge, to discuss with him the job that Kendrick Santana offered her. Kyle was right, Kendrick is the answer to her problem financially, but thinking of her role in the job offered made her confused. She slammed her back against the backrest of the chair while turning her head simultaneously to the door of the restaurant where a handsome guy in his long blue-sleeved shirt paired with dark blue denim jeans and brown loafers, came in. He stands for a while looking for someone but immediately walks towards Samantha after she waves her hand to him. He is Kyle Delos Santos. He is so handsome that it made some women not take their eyes off him, oblivious to the fact that he doesn't like the opposite s*x. It's just that he likes Samantha, not just because she is a lesbian, but because she understands and accepts every bit about him. They have been best friends since they were in secondary school and treated each other as siblings. It never happens that they have misunderstandings. They argued but they would resolve it immediately. Their closeness made people assume sometimes that they were a couple. Knowing about it, they will just laugh it off as they both know who they are.
Kyle embraced Samantha as soon as he came to the table where Samantha was waiting. He then sat on the opposite chair. Not even a few seconds passed for him to sit when Samantha lay in front of him the white envelope that Kendrick Santana gave to her.
Kyle's brows knitted, wondering. “What's this?” He took the envelope and waved it in front of her.
“Open it!” Samantha replied.
Kyle opened the envelope. He gasps in surprise to see a bunch of money in it. He quickly closed it and looked at her.
“From Kendrick?”
Samantha nodded. “300, 000 pesos as an advance p*****t,” she answered.
“You mean you accepted the offer?”
Samantha shakes her head lightly, reaches for the glass of water, and drinks it before she answers Kyle.
“I haven't confirmed it yet, but he is so smart to leave that envelope, so maybe he was thinking that I cannot refuse when he does that.”
“So what makes you confused?” Kyle asked as Samantha called him and told him that she wanted to see him because she was confused and wanted him to help her decide.
“The conditions! He wanted me to pretend to be his girlfriend and to be his wife…”
Kyle gasped with eyes widened, covering his mouth with his hands. He least expected the offer that Samantha told him. Carlo didn't tell him what job Kendrick had to offer when he spoke to him to recommend Samantha to his best friend. He asked him but he answered that only Kendrick could explain the job. Kyle thought that Kendrick was looking for an applicant for a vacant position in their office.
“I'm not done yet, so hold your breath,” Samantha said and chuckled. She wanted to laugh at Kyle's reaction, even though her mind, about whether to accept the job or let it go and find other ways to solve her financial problem.
“Continue.”
“He wanted to have a contractual marriage,” Samantha added.
Again, Kyle gasped and his eyes widened in another surprise.
“What the…”
“But he didn't tell me the reasons why. He just told me one condition,” Samantha continued.
“What is it?”
“Not to fall in love with him.”
Kyle suddenly burst out laughing, which made Samantha pout her thin moist lips.
“Seriously?! Does he know who you are? I mean, Carl told me that he told Kendrick brief information about you like you know…..your s****l orientation,” Kyle said, whispering the last words, aware that people around wouldn't be able to hear it.
“He knows because I told him too,” Samantha answered, sighing before she leaned against the chair.
Kyle knows her well. He knows how hard it is for her to decide between her pride and her responsibility to her godmother.
“So what is your decision?”
“I don't know, Kyle. If I can only get the funds that my parents left for me…”
“The problem is they're gone and no one can relinquish the rights of that money unless you fulfill what is written in the agreement,” Kyle said, cutting her off when she is about to tell her resentment again towards her deceased parents.
“I will try to talk to Atty. Lorenzana, maybe there is another way,” she said, but she wasn't sure. She did speak to their family lawyer a few times but he was firm with his decision not to break the agreement that Samantha's parents trusted in him.
“Why don't you accept Kendrick's offer? I mean, think about it. You both can benefit from it,” Kyle said when suddenly an idea flashed into his mind.
“What do you mean? If I accept his offer, of course, we will both benefit from it. Didn't I tell you the reason why? And the reason why you recommend me to him?” Samantha's brows furrowed. Wondered what her friend meant to say.
“That's not what I mean,” Kyle responded and gestured to her to come closer. She scowled but followed what Kyle told her. She got closer to him just to be shocked by what he told her.
“No way! Never!” She exclaimed, unable to control her voice, which made the other customers turn to look at their table. She raises her fingers gesturing a peace sign to everyone but blushes in embarrassment.
“Think about it, Sam,” Kyle said.
Their orders came and they started eating in silence but Samantha's mind was still in chaos. She doesn't know what to decide, whether to accept Kendrick's offer or not. If she doesn't accept it, her godmother will stay in the hospital for a longer period and the bills increase.
After their meal, Kyle accompanies Sam to the hospital where Margarita is confined. She doesn't want Margarita to stay in the hospital, but she knows no one to take care of her since she is working. She can't take a leave because she needs to earn a living for both of them. She already had it when Margarita suffered a stroke and the company wouldn't allow her to file another for leave. Finding and paying for a caregiver is also hard for her. Aside from the expensive rate, she is also afraid of anyone taking care of her.
“We're here!” Kyle announces when they arrive at the hospital.
“Are you going to go with me inside?” Samantha asked while taking off her safety belt.
“Of course, I do. What's the point of coming with you if I'm not going? Hmm?” Kyle answered, raising his brows to her.
“Fine!”
“Don't bother too much about Kendrick's offer. You have a generous time to think about it. He is not rushing you, right?” Kyle said when they were in the lobby walking, heading towards the room where Margarita is.
“How are you, Mama?” Samantha asked the moment they entered the private room provided for her.
“Hi, Tita!” Kyle also greeted her.
“I wanted to go home..” Margarita manages to speak though she has difficulty forming her sentences due to her facial paralysis that causes her difficulty in speaking.
“No worries, Mama. I will take you out of here,” Samantha said, holding Margarita's hand. Kyle throws her a questioning look and she responds with a nod. She decided. She will accept Kendrick's offer. She would set aside her pride and principles for the sake of Margarita. Whatever consequences may occur with her decision in the future, she will face them. The most important thing for her at the moment was Margarita. She has done a lot for her and now it's her turn to do a favor. Take care of her in a way she can afford.
