Chapter 5

“Oh hi, my handsome cousin, how are you?”

A woman on the other line answered Kendrick's call while he was on his way back to his office after sending Samantha.

“Alexa, how long is Samantha Muñoz working with you?” Asked Kendrick. J&L Creatives is named after Joseph and Louise, Alexa's parents. Louise is one of Alberto's siblings and Alexa is their daughter who manages the agency.

“How do you know her? I mean how do you know that she is working with me?” Alexa asked from the other line but raised her eyebrows because it was strange to her that her cousin would ask a favor and it involves a woman.

“Do I need to answer that?”

“Of course! I need to know the reason why you are asking me. But, when did you start liking a woman?”

“Okay fine! I'm courting her and I want you to promote her to a regular employee,” Kendrick answered after heaving a sigh. He needed to slowly tell his family about Samantha. It's a process he knows that it won't become obvious that he just took her to pretend. He must start from the courting process, as if.

Alexa laughed. She seemed not to believe him.

“Are you serious?”

“Yes! And can you stop asking me? Just tell me if you can do what I am asking you,” he said, annoyed.

“I offered her the job a few times because I saw her potential and I can't fathom her reason for doing freelance while I can employ her regularly in my company, but still I respect her decision whatever her reason is.”

“So, you cannot do it again?”

“I will try. Samantha is quite different from anyone. There is something in her that I can't figure out,” Alexa responds.

“Hmm, okay. I will try to convince her too.”

“Is she that special? I mean, you didn't do it to anyone, especially a woman. Why is it, Samantha?”

“She is special,” Kendrick said out of his mind. Too late to realize what he said, but he could see Samantha's face in his vision, which made him smile. Even his driver saw him smiling through the rearview mirror, and found it strange. He thought that there was something about Samantha that made their boss look weird.

“Wow! Strange, but is it for real?”

“What do you want? Holiday, shopping?”

“Both!” Alexa quickly answered. She knows that Kendrick is trying to bribe her to keep her mouth shut.

“Check your bank account later.”

“Whoa! I am so lucky to have a cousin like you, Mr. Santana,” Alexa said and giggled.

“Nothing followed. And please be quiet about it. Let me handle everything,” he said.

“Is it about Tito Alberto and Tita Sandra's plans?” Alexa asked, but she didn't hear anything from Kendrick.

“I heard it from Mom and Dad this morning,” she continued. She heard Kendrick's deep sigh. Of all his cousins, he is the one that is highly respected by everyone, especially his younger cousins. They looked up to him. Everyone in the family admired and respected him though she was a year older than him. She knows that it is against his will, but she also knows how Kendrick did a lot to maintain the legacy of their family.

“So, they already told everyone about it?”

“I think so and everyone is looking forward to meeting the lucky girl, but I think I already have an idea who she is,” Alexa said excitedly.

“Don't you dare ruin my plans, Alexa, otherwise you have to give back my money in double. I just sent it to your account.”

“Okay, my mouth is shut.” She said laughing but giving an assurance to Kendrick about Samantha before hanging up the call. “Leave Samantha to me. Bye!”

She then calls her secretary and asks her to call Samantha to her office.

“Hi, Miss Guevara! Is there any problem?” Samantha asked after Alexa gestured to her to sit after leaving her office.

Alexa looked at her intensely. “Miss Muñoz, I'm sorry, but I won't stop asking you to stay in our company. I will double your salary, just stay as an exclusive graphic designer of our company. I saw your potential and I can give you a position that suits you here too,” Alexa said. She started her plan to convince Samantha but she still had the last card if she had refused her offer.

“Miss Guevarra, I already told you why I am not interested in being a regular employee of your company. Sorry!”

She knew that she would tell her the same reason, so she straightened her back against her swivel chair and looked at her.

“Even Kendrick Santana will ruin my company if you don't accept my offer?”

Samantha's eyes widened in shock. She cusses in her mind after hearing what Alexa said. She clenched her fists. She didn't expect that Kendrick would meddle with her job.

“And why would he do that?” She asked, slightly gritting her teeth and nose, breathing out fire in annoyance.

“He is my cousin and whatever he wants he gets. Even blocking our transactions with our clients, if he didn't get what he wanted from us.”

Samantha was so surprised to know that her boss was Kendrick's cousin. She didn't realize it, maybe because of their different surnames.

“And you'll just let him manipulate you? That's ridiculous!”

“So how? Are you going to accept my offer or will you let him destroy our future transactions?” Alexa asked, ignoring what Samantha said, raising her brows, waiting for her response.

Samantha looked at Alexa and said, “I don't know what scheme you and your cousin are plotting but, alright, I will accept the offer. I'll be one of your regular employees from today.”

“Oh my, thank you, Samantha. Thank you so much. You don't know how happy I am,” Alexa is so delighted with Samantha's response but oblivious to her that Samantha is quite mad at Kendrick and planning to confront him.

Even before Alexa offered her the job, she had already decided to accept her offer, but she didn't expect that it would be too soon. She earns money by being a freelance designer, but recently she has been thinking of permanent employment and Alexa's offer is just in time. She didn't have any plan to spend all the money that Kendrick paid her. That is why she wanted to have a permanent job. Besides, the other company she's working with doesn't pay her much. Once she takes Margarita out of the hospital, her salary might be enough to support her medication and their daily allowance.

“Sam, there is a delivery for you.”

A lady next to Samantha's cubicle said to her when she was back from Alexa's office, pointing to a bouquet on her table. It was an elegant arrangement of a lily bouquet. She picked it up and checked if there was any card inserted and she found it.

She chuckled when she saw it was from Kendrick. She put the bouquet back on her table and was about to sit when her phone started ringing. It was Kendrick but she didn't have a plan to answer him. She cancels the call, but not a minute later, she does it when it starts ringing again. She rolled her eyes and grabbed her phone and received it.

“What?!” She annoyingly asks.

“Have you received the flowers I sent to you?” Kendrick asked, ignoring her annoyance.

Yes, I got it. Thank you!”

“Do you like it?”

“Mr. Santana, let's get it straight. First, the flowers. Don't send me them again. Second, about your cousin and your job. Will you stop bothering me or meddling in my personal life? I've already agreed to what you want. What else do you need?”

Samantha heard Kendrick's deep sigh before he answered, “Okay, if that's what you want.

“I did accept your cousin's job offer after you threatened to destroy her job promotions in the future.”

Kendrick, on the other, puckered his brows. He doesn't know what Alexa had told Samantha to make her agree but smiled eventually after he realized Samantha now has a regular job that doesn't need to shuttle from one company to another. His concern was for her to have a stable and permanent job. He doesn't understand why he is doing it, but he is thinking that it's just a bonus for helping her..

“Good! At least I know what my future wife is doing most of the time.”

Samantha rolled her eyes and exhaled upon hearing what Kendrick said. She felt strange when she heard the words from him. There is something within that is bothering her. She wanted to say it, but she held back. She is in the office and she doesn't want to draw curiosity from her colleagues.
