Paige approached the coffee shop, her mood already soiled for the day.
From behind the counter, Mira waved and brought over Paige’s usual caramel macchiato with a smile.
“Hey, hey Lulu!” Mira said cheerfully.
Paige smiled and rolled her eyes. “You know it's been like ten years, you don’t have to call me that anymore.” She took the coffee and wiped the sweat from her forehead.
Mira giggled and inter-looped their arms.“Yes, but it’s so... much fun to tease you” She stated as they made their way to Paige’s usual corner table.
Paige sat and listened as Mira began to go on about the weekly gossip around town, for a while until her phone started buzzing, and she glanced down at the screen.
'Unknown number'
Declining the call, she took another sip of her coffee. Two seconds later, her phone buzzed again. The same unknown number.
Paige frowned at her phone and again declined the call.
“Aw, did you and Gabby have a fight?” Mira asked with a smirk.
“Huh?” Paige looked up, clearly distracted.
“Oh” Mira blushed “I mean, I just assumed... since I don’t really see you talking with anyone else on the phone.” She explained sheepishly.
Paige opened her mouth to respond when her phone suddenly continued to buzz, interrupting them once more, as she slowly became more and more annoyed.
Just as she was about to block the number, a text notification popped up on her screen.
'If you screen my call one more time... I’m going to come up there and drag you out of that coffee shop myself -Alpha D.'
All of the blood drained from her face as Paige read the message, immediately standing from her seat. Her eyes widened, as she slowly glanced around, half expecting to see the alpha himself standing outside the window.
Mira appeared startled. “Hey, are you ok? You don’t look so good... are you getting enough sleep?” Mira said with a concerned look as Paige continued to nervously look around the shop.
“Hmm?” Paige mumbled, before glancing back at her. “Sleep? Uh, yeah I... need to get more of that.” She said in a distant voice.
Of course, he would have to call her. He couldn’t exactly mind-link her because she had no wolf.
“Thanks for the coffee” Paige said as she quickly set some money down and all but ran out the door of the shop.
As she quickly exited The Blue Java, Paige instantly face-planted into something warm and hard.
Steadying herself, she noticed she was staring down at a pair of black boots. Page’s hand began to tingle, and she realized she now had ahold of someone’s arm.
Raising her head, she locked eyes with the most unusual dark green eyes she’d ever seen in her life. Forest green with little blood-red flecks around the iris. She stared at him in awe for a moment.
This man resembled something of a Greek god, only with a touch of something darker.
“Are you ok, miss...?” Came a voice from beside the beautiful stranger.
The voice at least brought Paige back down to earth with the realization that she’d just been standing there, with her mouth hanging open like an i***t.
She blinked, also realizing that Greek god appeared to be glaring at her. A most unusual euphoric feeling ran through her body, almost resembling a shiver.
“Miss...?” The intruding voice rang again.
“Huh” Paige squeaked, finally breaking eye contact with Greek god long enough to glance at the other man next to him, who was now addressing her, then back at the green-eyed stranger.
Greek god stared down at her, before breaking eye contact to slowly glance down at where she still held his bare biceps in her palm, which she noticed had an unusual snake tattoo wrapped around it, along with some tribal ink.
Suddenly Paige understood exactly why he was looking at her hand because it appeared to be squeezing of its own accord.
Paige’s cheeks flared bright red, and she instantly jerked her hand back, like his skin had burned her, placing it firmly in her other palm.
The dark-eyed stranger looked back at her again wearing the same intense, irritated look on his face.
“Uh, I... uh... well...” She stuttered, anxiously fidgeting with her hands.
Right then, the green-eyed man finally spoke in a low, steady, demanding tone. “You don’t have anything to say for yourself? Or do you think it's acceptable to go around feeling up random stran..."
At that moment, her eyes widened as she saw Alpha Damien’s Beta, Titus, crossing the street behind them. He appeared to be scanning the sidewalks in search of someone and, instinctively, she did the first thing that came to mind, jerking the stranger into a hug, cutting him off mid-sentence.
Well, more like she jerked herself into him because he didn’t seem to budge.
The first thing she noticed was the smell of the forest and rain mixed with the faint scent of leather and something stronger, a bit more masculine and natural that she couldn’t quite put her finger on... Subconsciously, she leaned into his chest where her face had conveniently landed in the embrace, deeply inhaling, before Paige suddenly felt an uncontrollable urge and began to bury her nose in the front of his black V-neck T-shirt.
Gods he smelled good. She thought as she sniffed him once more.
Two seconds later, Paige was interrupted by the other man beside them, clearing his throat.
Reality struck hard, and she froze as the realization of what she’d just been doing sank in.
Paige was mortified and felt she might die from embarrassment, before jerking away from him as quickly as she had come, only to again lock eyes with his intense icy stare.
She quickly racked her brain trying to decide what she should do. Should she faint? She wondered. No, they might wait around until she woke up, or worse, they might decide to take her with them.
Suddenly remembering something that took priority, she quickly glanced around looking for Alpha Damien’s Beta. When he was nowhere to be scene, she closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, and then peeked back up at the angry green-eyed stranger.
“I... I can explain...” she said hurriedly.
Greek god raised one of his brows.
Then out of nowhere, as if the gods themselves had heard her prayers, a truck rear ended a car that was parked on the side of the road behind them.
She certainly wasn’t going to waste an opportunity like this one, so abruptly she turned on her heel and ran in the opposite direction. When she was halfway up the street, she paused, looking back over her shoulder to see Alpha Damien’s Beta exiting the coffee shop before approaching the two strangers who were now staring after her.
Paige's eyes widened as she watched Greek god start her way only to be cut off by Beta Titus, and she swiftly turned and darted down the nearest alleyway.
Once she was a few blocks away, Paige stopped for a moment, leaning over, placing her hands on her knees as she attempted to catch her breath. Suddenly, her phone buzzed again, making her jump.
Reaching down, she pulled it out of her pocket, looking at the screen. The same unknown number.
Shit.
