Chapter 3

Syria's POV. As the party continued, my mind drifted from the activities going on around me. All I could think of was how I would take my revenge on Inara and Niko. There was no trace of happiness on my face, as my inner wolf yearned for revenge. After the party was over, I returned to my house immediately, finding a quiet place to think. "What do I need to do? What can I do to make them pay for what they did to me?" I thought aloud. "How about you kill Inara?" My inner wolf spoke to me, but I quickly rejected the thought. "No, I cannot do that to her. She is my sister, no matter what. If I kill her, Niko would suspect that I am the murderer, and that would only make me stand on the losing side," I responded to my wolf. "So, what do we do then?" My mind searched through every nook and cranny, thinking hard about what to do to make the two of them feel remorseful. As I kept thinking of what to do, I did not realize how late it was, and slowly I fell asleep. In the early hours of the morning, I heard a thunderous knock on the door, which woke me up from my sleep. I stretched in bed, creasing my brows, as I got up to get the door. "Hey, you! It's time to work. Get over to the field, now," I heard the grumpy man speak to me. I shook my head to get over the sleep, as I realized that it was another stressful day to get to work. I sighed, shutting the door. In less than five minutes, I was out of my house to the field. It had been a long while since I entered the field. Due to my mate's bond with the alpha's son, Inara and I were exempted from working in the field, but I guess this time, I was included. "You are required to take fifty blocks to the other side of the field. You have till dusk to do that," the man instructed. I looked at the heavy blocks in front of me, and I felt like collapsing. Aside from the fact that it had been a while since I did something like this, just looking at the pile of blocks made me feel dizzy. "Get to work, immediately!" He yelled at me. I sighed deeply, and picked up a block, slowly placing it on my head. I could feel my head pounding, as I walked to the other side of the field, which, if calculated, was about eighty-five steps. "Hey!" I heard the man shouting. I turned around to see that he had called me. I trudged towards him, breathing heavily. He placed his hands on his waist, looking at me in disgust, as though I did something bad to him. "Lord Niko's mate ordered me to add an extra fifty blocks for you. So, stop being slow, and get to work!" He said. My jaw dropped, as I turned to the direction where Inara stood with Niko. In anger, I approached her. I stood in front of her, glaring daggers at her. "What? You have only carried just a block and you are tired already?" She sneered at me, letting out a mocking laughter. I turned to Niko, but he only supported her. He said to me, "What more can a beta do, other than work her life out, until her dying breath?" I wanted to cry, but the tears were not coming out. I stared at both of them in disbelief. How could the two people I trusted and loved do something like this to me? Just as I wanted to leave, Inara voiced out. "You are just a cursed beta, who does nothing else but leach on people. Without Lord Niko, I bet you would have been kept behind bars now in the dungeon to be fed to the dragons. Anybody that gets close to you always ends up losing their lives, just like our parents died because of you! You killed them, Syria, and you almost killed Niko, but fortunately, he survived it. "Can't you see? He is better off with me than he is with you. You are nothing but a despicable leach! A naive she-wolf, and an unfortunate beta. You deserve to die!" She spat bitterly, letting out a sinister laughter. "How dare you call me a murderer? You and I know what happened to our parents! How could you say I killed them? Because of me, you were opportune to live a life that many betas did not get to live. Because of me, you survived the storms that came after us after our parents' death. I suffered and bore the pain for you and me! How could you be so ungrateful?" I mouthed, glaring at her in shock. She did not flinch, rather, she walked closer to me, and bent over, her forehead almost touching mine. She mouthed, "Don't shed any crocodile tears, because in the end, it's not worth it, and no one, absolutely no one will save you. I tell you to your face, Syria, you will soon be a forgotten beta!" I had had enough of her insults that I did not hesitate to slap her. It was so strong that it sent her to the ground. I bent down, and held a handful of her hair, raising her face. "I may be a beta, just like you, but I will not stoop so low to find pride in taking leftovers. Niko is just a piece of crumbs that you find attractive, and you know who the crumbs belong to. The one with no sense of pride and dignity!" I retorted. Niko pushed me away roughly, helping Inara up. He glared at me in hatred and called on the guards. "Take her away, and make sure she is punished!" He instructed. It was not a big surprise to me, and I let them take me away. "How dare you disrespect Lord Niko's mate? Today, you will see the end!" The man said to me, before laying me down. I watched him slowly, as he took the whip to flog me. I closed my eyes, ready to take the pain, when someone walked in. "Do you want to get punished by the Alpha? You are not allowed to take orders from anyone else, except the Alpha. Now, let her go!"
