“Hide if you can, Maya. You can run, but you can't hide from me! I will definitely find you!"
“She’s really sleeping…”
“Obviously, Romina. You could see that.”
“How is that possible? She’s a ghost, right? According to what I’ve read, ghosts aren’t felt tired since they’re already dead.”
“Yeah, you’re right but as you can see, a dementor was after her so it might be really tiring for a ghost, especially a kid ghost getting chased by an apparition as well. That apparition can actually weaken someone’s spiritual energy, especially this ghost. They’re be weakened twice the normal since they don’t have their own host body.”
“Ah, I see. Poor little soul.”
“MAYA!”
The kid gasped as she woke up. She immediately sat up and look at herself—she was still pale and glowing and she was also wearing her clothes.
“You’re awake,” the kid immediately turned her head to Romina who walked towards her and leaned. “Are you okay… Maya, right? Your name is Maya.”
“You’re…” the kid muttered then she nodded slowly. “Yeah, I’m okay. Where-Where am I?”
“You’re in my house. In my room, actually. You might be wondering why I’m seeing you and why did we bring you to my house. I couldn’t answer that either but all I could tell you is we’re trying to get you away from that apparition chasing you…”
“Even though it’s really a pain in the a*s that Simeon and Romina wanted to meddle in some lost ghost’s business then I have no choice but to follow their leads since the dementor is after the two of you.”
The kid’s gaze settled on Luciel and as soon as she saw his horns and wings, she immediately shrieked. “AAAHH!!! A DEMON! A DEMON!”
Luciel immediately covered his right ear using his index finger. “You’re as loud as f**k. Tone it down, will ya?”
Romina immediately glared at him. “Luciel, stop that. Can you just hide your horns and wings? You’re scaring her,” she heard Luciel clicking his tongue in distaste but he followed her anyway. She, then, turned to the ghost named Maya again. “I’m so sorry about Luciel. He may be like that but he’s a nice guy. He won’t hurt you.”
“I told you, I am not nice. I’m a f*****g demon.”
“Oh, just shut up already and hide your wings.”
“Wha-What is a demon doing here?” Maya managed to ask. She managed to calm down though she was still a bit scared of Luciel’s presence.
“Ah, about that, he’s actually my temporary guardian since, you know, they said that the angels who are assigned to guard humans—especially me—are still in the middle of their training so Luciel is one of the selected demons that will guard us temporarily until those angels are ready to guard us,” Romina responded.
“I-Is that really possible?” Maya couldn’t help but ask.
“Hah?! What’s that supposed to mean?!”
“Can you just calm down and shut up, Luciel? You’re scaring the kid. Stop it.”
“Oh, she’s already awake.”
Romina turned her head to Simeon who had just gone inside her room. “Oh, Simeon. You’re back!”
“Can you stop inviting yourself to Romina’s room? That’s trespassing,” Luciel barked at him.
“Now, now, calm down Luciel. I didn’t invite myself. Romina actually allowed me to visit her and Maya and also to protect them from the dementor so calm down,” Simeon said. “I also set up a barrier all over Romina’s house so we will not worry anymore if the dementor will track Maya and Romina.”
“I am calm you i***t of an angel!” Luciel spat at him. “And I am here to f*****g protect them so just go to your own human and stop acting like you’re they’re—you’re Romina’s guardian f**k it! Keep your barrier to yourself, damn it!”
“Now, now, don’t be so mad, Luciel. I was just trying to help.”
“I am not mad f**k you! That’s why I hate angels!”
"Wait, Luciel, don't tell me that you're..."
"I am not jealous! I'm a demon, not a human!"
"I wasn't thinking about you being jealous. I was about to say that you're angry--"
"Yes, I am! Now, f**k off!"
“How did you keep up with them?” Maya couldn’t help but ask as she watched the two celestial beings bickering in front of them.
Romina shrugged and chuckled awkwardly. “I don’t know~ maybe I just got used to their presence, is all.”
“Hmm…” Maya raised her knees just to hug them. “You must be lucky, having friends like them. Ever since I became a ghost, I only felt so alone to the point that I mistakenly met a hideous creature who’s now after my soul.”
Romina turned her head to Maya again. “May I know the reason why you’re still here in the land of the living?”
Maya looked at her and sighed. “I… I was just playing hide and seek with my friends. That school was actually in the middle of construction when me and my friends decided to play there. I hid in this certain wooden box and by mistake, it got closed by a heavy object from the construction. I attempted to open it so I could get out and go home but the next thing I knew, I woke up as a ghost and I couldn’t find my body anymore. I couldn’t internalize it at first that I am already dead because I am still nine. I have so many things that I wanted to do when I grow up. I am still nine… and I’m dead. Who would want that…?”
Romina could really hear her heart breaking by hearing Maya’s story. She’s always thankful to the Father for everything she has and she gets and it’s just too sad that a little kid who wanted to live her life to the fullest couldn’t do that anymore because of an accident and the worst part is she couldn’t even pass through the afterlife because her body was missing.”
“If only… if only I listened to my mother not to go to that construction site to play. If only I just listened to her… then I wouldn’t have died,” Maya hugged her knees more as she spoke. Her tears rolled down her cheeks. “I want to see my mom… I just want to go home. I want to go home and see mom before I’ll depart from this world.”
Romina slowly hugged the ghost. At first, she was reluctant to do so because it might be really awkward for Maya but when she felt that the ghost responded to her hug, she felt at ease.
“Don’t worry, Maya. We will do our best to protect you from the dementor and take you home to your mother. I will promise you that.”
Maya managed to smile and responded to Romina’s hug. “Thank you. I am counting on you…”
“Magtago ka nang maigi, Maya. Mahahanap din kita. Mahahanap din kita at makakain ko rin ang iyong kaluluwa… kasama ang kaluluwa ng babaeng sumasagabal sa akin.”
